  • So many extensions...brain can't handle it all...

  • Your explaining of the piano is probably the best i've seen on you-tube, but you only seem to teach beginner song,s (shame) !

  • i have a question: in Cm scale the sixth note of the scale is Ab and not a natural A. but why is it that in a Cm 6th chord we keep the A natural. can anyone answer?

  • @farah73

Or put it another way. You construct a 6th chrod by adding another note to a Triad, one whole step above the 5th. For exampe, C Major triad = C, E, G..and C Major 6th = C,E,G,A. Thus, if you lower the E in the C Major 6th Chord, you have C minor 6th Chord = C, Eb,G,A

  • @farah73

Remember that there are three minor scales in common use-Melodic, harmonic and natural minor scales.

The melodic minor scale signature is WS HS WS WS WS WS HS.

The Harmonic minor scale signature is WS HS WS WS HS Mi3 HS

The Natural minor scale signature is WS HS WS WS HS WS WS

Therefore if a minor key signature is in use, you need to sharpen the 6th and/or 7th to obtain a melodic or harmonic minor. Ab->A and Bb ->B.

  • @Fdirie

Hey thanks a lot. that makes sense, (melodic minor). I never thought of it that way. However, in structuring all other chords we usually go by the natural minor!

I like both of your theories though :) thanks again

  • Good stuff John. Being self taught with a limited repertoire this is a God send. Some of these chords i have 'made up'. Nice to know that I am going in the right direction. Thanks for this indeed! Oscar Peterson here I come!

  • Thank you, can't wait to get my keyboard and gig in some jazz

  • I think for a minor 6 chord you base it off of dorian minor, based on the minor scale derived from the second position (supertonic, re) of the major scale. so C minor with a key signature of Bb major (C is ii in Bb), producing a C minor scale which has an A natural even though the other C minor scales (natural, melodic, and harmonic) all have an Ab rather than an A natural.

  • thanks alot though

  • so it should be the sixth note of the major scale that comes into the minor 6th?

  • question: at 4:39 when you said A for C minor 6 shouldn't it be A flat ? cuz A isnt in the C minor scale.

  • Thanks you.

  • @plasmavideos thanks you lol

  • instead of flat I like to call it .5
