This is what happens when fucking puritans found a nation! Some things will never change! When people in positions of power are forced to look into their own superstitions and hypocrisy they fucking panic and start throwing insults! The more actual intelligent free thinking people start to speak the more committees form to shut them up!
@iamufreak:. . . no, it is definitely not just you. I also think all those people sitting up in them "high chairs" are retarded. But I also think they are inbred Klansmen (and women) sippin' mash and moonshine outta their Mason jars, just like in the movie ''Deliverance". That's what happens when people don't vote.
Is it just me or do all them people sitting up in them high chair all sound retarded... I mean really really really retarded, I mean IQ of a plant retarded
Ugh. That woman at the end ... did she actually think she made a point just because Frank made money off of his music (professional musician, what do you expect?!) As far as I'm aware, Frank's music was never called into question as far as the PMRC's obsession with "obscenity" went.
"We see, in the back of the city hall mind, the dream of a girl about 13. Off with her clothes and into a bed, where she tickles his fancy all night long. Life is such a ball I run the world from City Hallll!!" Should have been a broadway musical.
@unggrabb That is Senator Paula Hawkins (R Florida), died in 2009. I never liked her either. In his book, Zappa mentioned that all the Watergate crooks wound up working in her office... I wouldn't be surprised by that at all.
Senator Hawkins "Do you make a profit from sales of rock records. I think that statement tells the story to this committee." You know what she's doing she's saying that meaning he's only defending the lyrics because he will lose money. What about all the Washington wives that had tremendous "pull" within congress?
The fact that he makes a profit of the sale of his art sums up her whole point and contention? Then to question what kind of toys his kids play with.Ice T put it best,Rock music needs an enemy. The day a kid walks in and his mom says have you listened to your Ice T album today, He's finished.Rock n Roll is Rebellion and I think that's why it's lost much potency. The musicians don't care anymore write a love song and sell it to teen girls instead. Why make a stand,no one cares anymore.
The idea that the movie ratings system was established under voluntary circumstances speaks to both the utter naivety and ignorance of the esteemed douche bag senator. The movie ratings system was established in response to government threats of an enforced rating system. A person who performs an action they do not wish to perform because they know if they don't they will be forced to is not performing a voluntary action under any definition of the word.
I am so glad there's the PMRC because last time I rocked out to Angel of Death by Slayer, I started work Auschwitz and killed/experimented on thousands of jews. Thank god for that label, because I (like all normal people) am just a verse away from killing another human being, and that's Kerry King's fault
"So you DO make a profit from the sales of rock records?" I wish someone would have said "Are you saying that artists should not be allowed to live off of their art?"
@MrMrt777 Because the women in the PMRC were senators' wives and they were using their personal connections and their husbands' power to get what they wanted. Other than that, I've wondered the same thing, because there's no way this "issue" deserved being discussed on the government's time because, as you say, it's a private issue and not a government one.
@kcrich13 They DO now!I thank these guys for fighting a good battle, Zappa,Dee Snider, John Denver, and Ice T, but they lost. Now music doesn't even matter.
most of the so called "senators" cannot argue on a serious level, they only go to personal attacks without any points (especially the fucking bitch at the end).
but like we all should know; these people dont give a shit about anyone but want more control.
Why would one of the Senators ask Frank Zappa What Toys his kids have? it has nothing to do with the CensorShip of Rock Lyrics on Records,Tapes and CD
"Do you make a profit from the sales of records." "Yes." :Thank you, I think that statement tells the story to this committee." What?!!!! I though you had to be smart to be a senator. Hell, I have turtles that run faster than some of those legislative hat racks. Damn!
I think everyone was pretty open minded, except for Gorton. What an ass. Yuck! Frank is obviously an intelligent, informed man. He may not be steeped in the Constitution, but that's not his job, is it Mr. Pompous, Arrogant, Gorton. YUCK!
The government has even gotten worse since this hearing. Frank was way too intelligent to even lower himself to speak to them . I believe everyone should should send their Senators and Congressmen a copy of Frank & Steve Vai's song "Fuck Yourself". These government idiots didn't have a clue here and they don't have a clue today about anything but lining their pockets . Frank's work will live forever while these politicians are already forgotten, except Strom , who luckily kicked the bucket.
I listen to Slayer, Behemoth, Dark Funeral etc and I don't worship Satan. Metal is no less harmful than Huck Finn is meaningful. By PMRC logic, if Under the Blade is about sado-masochism and bondage, then To Kill a Mocking Bird promotes racism, Huck Finn promotes white supremacy, and The Great Gatsbu promotes the consumption of alcohol. These are the books kids read in school everyday. Jesus, if you raise your kids properly then these kind of things won't affect them. It's just good music.
Al Gore says that if you don't believe in his billion dollar climate change exchange then you're a modern day racist. Anyway it is / was and always will be real simple: whatever the constitution says you can't do you cannot fucken do, it doesn't matter what you THINK. All these bitches and Al gore plus most of the others are probably Grovers and Satan worshipers anyway. Hey bitch do you make a profit from sitting on that committee? Ok that tells us a lot bitch thank you.
If everyone took a psychology class there wouldn't be these fucking stupid arguments. If you can't understand that the human mind differs with every individual, and that certain views and opinions will inflict a different effect on each individuals mind then you have no place in politics. Why did that guy laugh at that death metal bands album art when that guy committed a murder in the same style? Because their minds handled the situation in the most natural psychological way that fit the person
I haven't felt this inspired in quite some time now, Mr. Zappa was a genius, and an inspiration for musicians everywhere. Thank you so much for posting these videos.
The female senator at the end of the video is a complete whore, you maya s well ask, does she make a profit from her job? The life of a musician isn't a free and stressful one, it's a hard road to travel down, no one's handed me free porche's or houses just yet, how do you think he pays for his childrens toys? Some people's attitudes and opinions on lifestyles disgust me, someone should provide cencorship on the bullshit that comes out of some of these people's mouths.
Offensiveness is over rated. People who don't have the respect of their children ain't gonna get it by censoring the world. You can bitch about the media all you want, but at the end of the day they are still gonna learn about the holocaust.
When I was a wee little lass I wasn't allowed to listen to my dads old Dead Kennedy and Bad Religion records until I was about 13, case and point I had responsible parents, the Gore children didn't.
You know what's crazy? I'm 16. When I was younger, I would see his albums that my father had and think "Wow, this looks pretty cool!", but my parents wouldn't let me listen because some of his songs were explicit or featured mature themes. Since I was maybe 12-13, I've been listening to Frank Zappa a lot. I don't see why the government can't see that and think, "Oh, that little system there makes sense!" When my parents thought I was mature enough, they let me listen; it makes sense, right?
Thank god I didn't vote for Gore... oh, wait, the alternative was Bush Jr... guess we didn't really have much of a choice there, did we? Just kidding, I didn't vote in that election... what would have been the point of that when I should be off at my job helping everyone but me achieve the American Dream of owning a home, etc?
6:34 After that shrew made her passive-aggressive, shitty remark and the chairman says, "The next witness is John Denver." I honestly thought he was being sardonic. Made me laugh. What small-minded, nasty fools some of these people were. It's astounding that they were allowed in the room, let alone allowed to hold seats of distinction. I'm not a fan of Al Gore, but at least he was earnest, civil and engaged.
Frank Zappa was gracious to the end - he could have revealed to the committee that he never had nor he expected to have a "hit record" in his career and he was in fact one of the poorest artists around. He could show that motivation was not "profit". But he allowed Sen. Hawkins to make her point.
Also, interestingly, none of the other conservatives on the panel fround anything wrong with the notion of Sen. Hawkins about making a profit. Isn't making a profit the essence of the American Dream?
what the hell was her point in the end... does she have some kind of problem with the fact the he made and still posthumously does profit from his awesome music, and she does a profit by being a cock-sucking bitch to a corrupt, greedy government. Is she jealous that he actually owned them all? What a fucking joke.
That woman senator is a pathetic lump. So was the bear by the tail jerk. I wonder what Zappa would have thought about that obvious inside job 9/11 if he were alive today. I wish he were still here. Our senators are even more pathetic today as then. A bunch of sickening, cowardly whores, left and right.
This is great evidence on how lawmakers and the people of congress try to regulate every aspect of our lives, and in our own homes no less. But what the PMRC didn't realize " at the time " was, by putting those little stickers on the albums & cassettes, it only made kids that was listening to rock & metal only want to listen to it that much more and it also made the artists more money lol. Talk about the ultimate BACK FIRE!
@Thrills2010 yeah. practically every action the government takes always has unintended consequences. it's called blowback. that's why the govt can't be trusted to do anything
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. That is literally the worst attempt to spell a word I have EVER seen and that is going to keep me happy for the next week.
almost every single statement had reasoning and was sound within the videos except for that last single statement from that horrid hick of a woman and her colorless statement "that about tells the story to this committee"
haha what? what story you trying to tell. everyone else was being straightforward and supporting their arguments with bullet points of interest concerning a main idea and she tries to highlight a person's reputation and their job description as an argument. man that was bad.
THIS IS ONLY THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG!!! THESE NAZII'S DID NOT STOP AND THEY ARE STILL OUT THERE TRYING TO MAKE YOU.... YES YOU A LABELLED RAPIST FOR LISTENING TO ANYTHING NON CHRISTIAN, AND YOUR DOG A VICIOUS BITER FOR SHITTING ON THE WRONG LAWN. 1) BE INFORMED. 2) READ A LOT. 3) LEARN THE LAW. 4) THESE PEOPLE WANT IT ALL!!. 5) IF YOU THINK THEY ARE TAKING CARE OF THE RAINFOREST YOU ARE SADLY MISTAKEN. 6) THAT WAS THE OPPOSITION TO "W' BUSH!! !!!!!FUCK!!!!!
"Well, I would object to that. I think first of all, I believe it was you who asked the question of Mrs. Gore whether there was any other indication on the album as to the contents. And I would say that a buzzsaw blade between a guy's legs on the album cover is a good indication that it is not for little Johnny."
thank you for everything, Frank...we miss u a lot
Wow .. she nailed him .. he makes MONEY on rock and roll records ... and he's a musician - I'm so glad the industry has been reformed so THAT could never happen again .... That was the best laugh I've had all day!
Oh, great, she pointed out he makes profit with his music. Some great information no one in this room (or the world) had and that HAD to be discovered is that Frank Zappa actually SOLD his records and made a living out of it. I'm shocked!
man, i wish Frank would have said at the end "yeah, I make money off the sale of the records and when you put your stupid ass labels on them, I'll make even more."
I'm not familiar with this lady but I sure hope she lived to see how the PMRC's label became a teenager's "seal of approval". If anything the "parental advisory" sticker has become hip-hop lingo for "more profit"
Despite Zappa's often "zany" public image he was an incredibly logical thinker, never hysterial and always capable of punching holes in unintelligent opinions. Nice one..
don't know if these politicians do, but i distinctly remember many of thoughts and reflections from my childhood and teenagehood. i had my music i chose to listen to, my favourite books picked by myself in the library. i was independently thinking person and i strongly believe that everyone at any age has the right to develop mentally in any direction. parents can try to influence their children but state censorship? for god's sake..
Never was a fan of his music, but damn was he awesome at that hearing. And what was with that lady Senator towards the end? Did she huff a bunch of Scotch Gard before the hearing? Because she definitely seemed short on brain cells. The fact such people can be elected to such high positions is terrifying.
I understand Zappa's partial objection to Hawkins' point of toy warning labels. However, it should be said that her question had no relevance to the debate. It is my understanding that toy manufacturer warning labels have nothing to do with moral/intellectual appropriateness but rather has a basis in mechanical safety issues (ie. removable parts that a small child might swallow, etc...) and, consequently, could prove to be a legal liability for the manufacturer.
@habitantcdn That's what I thought those labels were about too! If it has small parts that a small kid could choke on etc. I was like "this woman doesn't have a clue what she's talking about!"
Frank made a "profit" on music. For many years he had to work a day job. Wonder if that Senator (Don't recall her name) ever worked an ordinary job? Doesn't sound like it.
@TheGojira84 It was snide. The performing arts are not a widely respected profession and her sly implication was that Zappa's objections were based purely on financial greed. She did not attack the substance of anything Zappa said over the previous half hour; she just threw a personal attack at him and closed her testimony. Gutless, cowardly, and ignorant.
@headshop He was there with Zappa, what could he have really added that Zappa didn't say? The best he probaly could have added was a very enthusiastic "yeah"
LOL amazing. zappa's tradeoff with the female senator was classic..and god what a horrible copout she had at the end. i got a big laugh out of this up until then..
@JBT24 no. no no. she was lame in trying to imply only for records-purposes that zappa's whole reason for being present at this hearing, for taking the stance that he had on the issue, had only to do with profits. zappa was the man, throughout his life he spoke out against censorship, and did music for the love of it.
@jsXanatos That was Sen. Paula Hawkins. She was born and raised in Utah, and moved to Florida in 1955. She became Senator in '80. A year before this hearing she disclosed that she was a victim of sexual abuse as a child. Injured in a car, and freak studio accident in '82, suffered from constant pain. IMO, was likely over medicated during this hearing, by the way she looks and talks. Classic case of sexualy repressed, uptight, republican douche on a moral mission to save the world. Died in '09.
@jsXanatos dude u should have laughed harded cause she failed hard.her last question was a stupid rhetorical question which everybody gasped at it was so stupid.Frank got what he wanted in end.
If anybody has it, I'd love to see it, too. John Denver's wikipedia page has an excerpt of his testimony that indicates how very intelligent and articulate he was. Censors often misread the meaning of art, as his experience with "Rocky Mountain High," and Ozzy's with "Suicide Solution," make plain.
This is what happens when fucking puritans found a nation! Some things will never change! When people in positions of power are forced to look into their own superstitions and hypocrisy they fucking panic and start throwing insults! The more actual intelligent free thinking people start to speak the more committees form to shut them up!

Isn't making a profit the essence of the American Dream?
sternumagnum 9 months ago 4
what the hell was her point in the end... does she have some kind of problem with the fact the he made and still posthumously does profit from his awesome music, and she does a profit by being a cock-sucking bitch to a corrupt, greedy government.

Talk about the ultimate BACK FIRE!

haha what? what story you trying to tell. everyone else was being straightforward and supporting their arguments with bullet points of interest concerning a main idea and she tries to highlight a person's reputation and their job description as an argument. man that was bad.

only a genius can give this kind of answer:
"Well, I would object to that. I think first of all, I believe it was you who asked the question of Mrs. Gore whether there was any other indication on the album as to the contents. And I would say that a buzzsaw blade between a guy's legs on the album cover is a good indication that it is not for little Johnny."

The reason toys have age guidelines is because they pose a physical threat to children ie kids choking on the parts of the toy etc
Music doesn't pose a physical threat to children. So her comparison is wrong and retarded.

don't know if these politicians do, but i distinctly remember many of thoughts and reflections from my childhood and teenagehood. i had my music i chose to listen to, my favourite books picked by myself in the library. i was independently thinking person and i strongly believe that everyone at any age has the right to develop mentally in any direction. parents can try to influence their children but state censorship? for god's sake..

Impossible not to love Frank Zappa, i'd like to be briliant as he was.
rhesus2108 1 year ago 2
I understand Zappa's partial objection to Hawkins' point of toy warning labels. However, it should be said that her question had no relevance to the debate. It is my understanding that toy manufacturer warning labels have nothing to do with moral/intellectual appropriateness but rather has a basis in mechanical safety issues (ie. removable parts that a small child might swallow, etc...) and, consequently, could prove to be a legal liability for the manufacturer.
habitantcdn 1 year ago 2
@habitantcdn That's what I thought those labels were about too! If it has small parts that a small kid could choke on etc. I was like "this woman doesn't have a clue what she's talking about!"

How does him making money tell the story? What a dumb lady and frank wasn't all rock!
TheGojira84 1 year ago
@TheGojira84 It was snide. The performing arts are not a widely respected profession and her sly implication was that Zappa's objections were based purely on financial greed. She did not attack the substance of anything Zappa said over the previous half hour; she just threw a personal attack at him and closed her testimony. Gutless, cowardly, and ignorant.

"Thank you, I think that statement tells the story to this committee."
What? The fact that Zappa makes a living FROM HIS JOB proves whatever kind of incoherent point you're trying to make?
JBT24 1 year ago
@JBT24 no. no no. she was lame in trying to imply only for records-purposes that zappa's whole reason for being present at this hearing, for taking the stance that he had on the issue, had only to do with profits. zappa was the man, throughout his life he spoke out against censorship, and did music for the love of it.
jsXanatos 1 year ago
@jsXanatos I totaly agree. Frank wrote a great manus for that lady to make a fool out of herself.
Echnaton1954 1 year ago
@jsXanatos That was Sen. Paula Hawkins. She was born and raised in Utah, and moved to Florida in 1955. She became Senator in '80. A year before this hearing she disclosed that she was a victim of sexual abuse as a child. Injured in a car, and freak studio accident in '82, suffered from constant pain. IMO, was likely over medicated during this hearing, by the way she looks and talks. Classic case of sexualy repressed, uptight, republican douche on a moral mission to save the world. Died in '09.

to0nstyle 2 years ago
If anybody has it, I'd love to see it, too. John Denver's wikipedia page has an excerpt of his testimony that indicates how very intelligent and articulate he was. Censors often misread the meaning of art, as his experience with "Rocky Mountain High," and Ozzy's with "Suicide Solution," make plain.
