The female vocalist is Pamela Ramcier, who deserved to be a megastar and who never was, for reasons beyond anybody's ability to understand. Her singing on this number breaks my heart.
I fully agree, I totally love this song (I mean this version of song) since I have first heard it last years.. Such tender voice, not only hers..touches me deeply.. I cried many times..
I can remember standing next to a juke box in the sixties hearing this song. I was 5. I started crying when the spoken part came and the haunting Womans voice in the background. I had no idea why i was crying. I felt so connected. What a memory.
I remember how much this song touched my father's heart back in 1967 in California when it became a hit.....The poem, ( and lyrics ) in this song are by José Martí, the father of Cuba's independence movement who lived from 1853 to 1895....My dad was from Spain but loved Cuba as his own, and lived there from 1921 to 1963......The credits on this LP record which I still have, read Martí, Angulo, and Seeger......My dad passed away in 2009 at the age of 103 and 6 months....
lovely comment... I love this song so much...lyrics is beautiful and touching, and I love combination of English and Spanish words...music is very tender and deep, I was listening to this song during difficult periods in my life and the song is now very deep in my heart...
I would love to visit Cuba one day...and here this song...
sierra, I lost my father back in 1994. Though this song doesn't remind me in particular about his life, he was always involved heavily in music being a church organist. I have always loved this song just for its sheer beauty. Your father was so blessed to have lived such a long, rich, and rewarding life. It's been over 15 years since my Dad passed. Hardly a day goes by that I don't think about him. I know what you're going through. Just enjoy the memories that you have of him.
my fave tune..remind me of my old days with my beloved papa...he used to play a guitar and sing this magic tune....:)) ty for upload it here...muacksss
The best part of the song is the narration "I am a truthful man from the land of the palm trees.
And before dying, I want to share these poems of my soul.
My poems are soft green. My poems are also flaming crimson.
My poems are like a wounded fawn seeking refuge in the forest. With the poor people of this earth I want to share my fate. The streams of the mountains please me more than the sea."
The original lyrics for Guantanamera are in Wikipedia. The original poem was by a man named Jose Marti. In the Pete Seeger version of the song he sings the song in both English and Spanish. There are several versions. It is a Cuban folk song.
I don't know if they support it or ban it, but the original poem by Marti was written in 1878 titled the "Versos Sencillos", well before Castro. By itself it is a beautiful piece of work.
this is one of the most beautiful songs ever. I heard the story of Jose Marti who wrote this poem. He hated war and was a wonderful freedom fighter, who lost his life early.
Tuve la gran suerte de ver a estos estupendos cantantes en directo (Alumni Hall, University of Western Ontario, London, Canada) en 1968. Mi unico comentario es : grandioso espectaculo que me ha quedado como uno de mis mas gratos recuerdos.
Hey I also think this song is brilliant and always have done, even though I don't speak Spanish. Tell your gf she ain't got no taste in music...............heheheheheh...........
I think you are right. Research it, there is a real story behind this song. hint- jose Marti. Guatanamera means poor girl from guatanamo bay. Legend has it Marti had such a lover, and dropped her for a wealthy woman after he became famous. When he heard the girl took her own life, he led a charge against the federales (against orders) and died himself. "The mountain stream pleases me more than the ocean."
I like your story, it's so touching. I've always been a fan of this beautiful song, it was a number-nine hit on the billboard charts back in 1966. Everything about it is great, the lyrics, their voices and the music, all three coming together to produce one heck of a song. Thanks again!!
My dad's favorite song introduced to him by a Cuban refuge who taught him Spanish in the 60s. I was introduced to this twenty-five years ago, and I still love it.
What a beautiful song. I had no clue that it was The Sandpipers that sang this lovely song. What I love about this song is the poetry, grace, and the way the song flows with a gentle musical wave. Thank you for posting this for us. :)
Many years ago I was in a supper club in Miami. This song was sung by a young lady. A lot of people in the crowd started crying while she was singing. I was told they were Cubans and this was like their unofficial national anthem - for those who had escaped Castro.
nightkillertwo - the author of "Guantanamera", Jose Marti (1853-95), was a Cuban patriot whose name is invoked by Cubans on both sides of the political divide. Which side would Marti have supported? The Miami Cuban supper-club set won't like it, but Marti wrote a book about his stay in the USA, entitled "Inside the Monster: Writings on the United States and American Imperialism", in which he said "I have lived in the monster and I know its insides; and my sling is the sling of David."
I have not been able to find this version on any of the music download sites. I like it becuase this is the version they used to play on the radio when I was young. I have only seen the record album version.
This song brings back some wonderful memories of high school. A funny story I must share. A friend thought the words were: One ton tomato, I'll eat a one ton tomato.
ManfromUNCLE52: That didn't come out quite right... what I meant to say is that we like alot of the same music, it's just that MY taste is probably, overall, just a little more "eccentric" than yours. Nice song, but at 2:03 it has Robie Lester singing the spanish verse. Robie was also a narrator for Disneyland Records where she released a series of Disney LP's and read-along books until 1970. Great to hear her appearance on that song.
I loved this song when I was a kid. I guess I've always had kind of "strange" taste in music...and everything else. But, apparently, I'm not the only one. Thanks for posting. It's as beautiful as I remember it.
You really aren't the only one. I too, for example, will like only one song on an album or dig a tune others feel so-so about. Songs like Spooky and Louie Louie are some. We are all unique individuals canvassing the spectrum of what life has to offer in music, food, etc.
I disagree. This song does not need any pictures. When listening to it I see myself being ten years old, begging for small change from my dad to be able to play it on the jukebox.
This song is too beautiful to be the national anthem of Cuba. Ever noticed that all communistic/socialistic totalitarian nations have anthems glorifying battles, revolutions, and blood-spilling?
