I wish people wouldn't make comparisons with other conductors. A great work like this can be performed a thousand different ways and still be valid. Awesome performance by the way. Loving the weightier strings at the end, really leans towards being more final
I LOVE watching the violins players at 0:22 seconds. The very ominous string background part just kind of sneaks in and they just lean in on their instruments. SO AWESOME.
I'm a Furtwangler fan and have developed a bit of a bias towards historical recordings over the years. I was fully prepared to be underwhelmed by this clip, but, surprisingly, I've come to rate this as second to only to Dr. Furtwangler himself.
I have heard the Kleiber and Mravinsky version many times and they both have considerable merit, but I have to put this a notch above both. Excellent performance!
Aber auch musikalisch wundervoll, obwohl ich denke, dass Sir Simon Rattle den Brahms nicht so gut dirigieren kann wie Mahler. Seine Mahlerinterpretationen sind wirklich toll.
Now we just need some of this videos from the DCH to be issued on DVD. I urge the Berlin Philharmonic to issue its on CD's like the LSO and Concertgebouw and the same with DVD's. If the media companies don't want to issue them...the orchestra should issue them on their own label.
Yes, on DVD would be great as many peopl would prefer to watch them in their lounge steeo system and on a good TV screen! It would be a good revenue stream to help the DCH project pay for itself quicker.

@jaruro1 Yes, Rattle lets the piece breathe and so the dramatic punctuation comes through far better than with Karajan.

This is absolutely fantastic. So energetic.
But Rattle really reminds me here of the cartoon where Bugs Bunny is conducting.

this is good and no doubt beautifully played, but doesn't have sting or tension of Furtwangler or Mravinsky versions.

Brahms last symphony.... You sometimes feel sorrowful, but it also brings happiness. What a complicated symphony. Good perform by Rattle!

I'm suprised Mr Rattle has so much energy after conducting three massive movements! The strings are on fire in this excerpt!
