  • I clicked on this after following links, and fully expected some awful, patronising, pantomime accent.... but you're good, very good actually. I'm impressed.

You'll be welcome in Scotland anytime.

  • Listening to actual people is a good step, so many immitate other's doing accents which is how you end up with silly sterotypes. One thing about a Scottish accent we pick up on quick is region, choose a part of Scotland and a class of person too. For example mixing a Scouse brick layer with a London banker wouldn't come off as an 'English' accent.

  • I'm about half way through your video.

I found it cause I've been trying to find good videos on scottish accent help.

My family is from Glagow and I hear them speak all the time so it should be relatively easy to pick up. Anyway, you're cute and your accent is amazing.

I also read or type in a scottish (glasweigen) accent, I'm from canada though.

  • @nnmacameraman92

Thanks for sharing your life story with nobody who cares.

1 out of 10 for effort.

  • You are actually pretty good.. Just remember dont pronounce your T's.. and try to shorten you words, like miss out some letters.

And also there are lots of different types of accent here, Glaswegian etc.

Hope ye get it right ;)

  • LOVE that you said David Tennant!!!

    - Billy Boyd have a very sezy Glascow accent ;D

  • Sounds a bit like a posher mixed with a Scottie accent,

not sure it's match made in heaven though.

  • Iam scottish Lol..

  • I can't believe how beautiful you're..

  • @UnitedStatesPatriotz

Men see a man in a video, they say stupid things. More men see women in a video, they're more polite, they kiss ass, they include how beautiful/adorable/cute they are, and then they confess their love for them. You, yes you, useless, go fetch me some cereal.

  • @werbnnerf You sir have no life.. If you think what I said was "stupid" why you even care to reply it? I mean just leave it man go Troll somewhere else.. Please don't act like that, speak normal so we can have a good talk..

    Charles..

  • @UnitedStatesPatriotz

I was going to give a detailed response... but then I realized you lack comprehension: "...speak normal so we can have a good talk...". Need I say more?

  • @werbnnerf Why are you trollin' ? Whats the purpose, you people (trolls) always enjoy insulting others..

  • @UnitedStatesPatriotz

I didn't insult anyone, really. And that word is beyond overused. You know very well I'm not a "troll" yet you insist.

  • @werbnnerf Instulting part: (You, yes you, useless, go fetch me some cereal.)

  • @UnitedStatesPatriotz

Do you really consider that trolling? Well, I should reverse it, because now it seems like you're the troll.

  • @werbnnerf Hmmm.. Alright kid youre the best I am all wrong. Now please stop replying..

  • clearly you sound english. interesting btw.

  • hi cutie.

    i love you..

    imma sub u.

will u hav a date with me?

  • hey holly are you already have a boyfriend??

  • A very good attempt at a Scottish accent! As a Scot myself, I would say your attempt at our accent sounds like someone from the Lothians region, but sounds very different from, say, a Highlander or an Aberdonian dialect. As I'm sure your aware, the dialects of the Scots accent differs greatly depending on what region of Scotland your in. However, considering all the attempts I have heard by folk in other countries, yours was very well done!

  • Are you beautiful :)

  • I like what I see and when I say that I mean it (:

  • wow, ur talented girl! But this scottish accent kinda sounds flimsy...can u do gerrard buttler?

  • @brothajamez hmmm i could give it a go... Doubt i could get his manly husk though!! Maybe i'll do a special edition in a later video :)!

  • Aha, you're adorable, now I don't know if I believe you're british! You liar D:

    `wanders off`

  • @4ndr3w90 Haha, it is sad but true- i am british- from Surrey :)

  • And then you're off to Paisley with David Tenant. Seriously; you'll sound noticeable weird to anyone who is actually Scottish (or has spent much time here) if your accent suddenly lurches from East to West. You're doing really well, but try not to accidentally combine Tennantisms and Jensenisms or you'll end up with a strange mix which sounds Scottish to non-Scots but sounds painfully fake to everyone else (read; Amy Walker's accents).

  • @Faboba sounds like you know what you're talking about.

Any advice on how to differentiate between the accents then? Any tips you can give to get out of the habit of creating a 'strange mix'?

    Holly.

  • @hstimson1 - I say you're on to the right track in emulating particular speakers, in doing so you should try to be conscious of where their accents come from. Just as people from Southport sound different from someone from Bootle if you're from the Wirral, it's not very hard to pick out someone from Leith from someone from Glenrothes. Try to find several people (on youtube, on iplayer) from a particular area and/or background and focus on them for a while rather than mix and matching celeb Scots

  • @Faboba cool, will do. Apologies for generalising all scottish- i am aware of the differences just haven't quite worked them out in my head yet!

So how come you know so much about dialects then? Where abouts are you from, if you don't mind me asking :)?

    Holly.

  • @hstimson1 I'm from Rutherglen in Glasgow originally. Though I'm now out in Fife. I went to university down in England and as a result are continually told I 'sound English' which is probably true. I'm afraid I can't claim to have anything like your evident facility with accents, but I can tell the difference between Edinburgh and Paisley ;) I came across your video via a link from Amy Walker. I'm always interested to find non-Scots trying to do an accent; you're much better than most.

  • @Faboba yay! thanks, that's good to know. I'm hoping to become a dialect coach in the (hopefully) not so distant future. So, obviously i need to get my head around the differences within the regions! But at the moment i'm just sort of focusing on stock (and i suppose generalised) accents- so actors can get used to basic traits. If you've got anymore advice please let me know. I need as much help as i can get! :)

  • Except, and this is something 'Amy Walker' seems not to grasp, Scotland has as much if not more regional variation in accents. Your accent here is switching between slightly affected Lothian (what Ashley Jensen speaks) and Dundonian (except in 4:10 when it makes an unfortunate leap north). This might be a consequence of trying to emulate someone else rather than, once your over the initial hurdle, internalizing the accent and making it your own.

Watch the Scottish Parliament on iPlayer.

  • hello! hahah youre coool im trying to learn accents all around just for teh fun of it, but im like from singapore and we have like one of the worstt english accents ever :D

  • @minussixtyseven Haha thanks! i'm sure ur accent's not that bad!! Good luck with it- i'll be uploading another video as soon as i can! :)

  • @hstimson1 It's more of a dialect though. But it's still present when mainstream English is spoken.

Oh btw, Holly, you're cute ;)
