first of all the harrier isnt a VTOL aircraft, its a STOVL (short take off and vertical landing) aircraft. and this is real,the pilot walked away with 2 broken legs, but is now again a fully active harrier pilot, and the reason it crashed was because the water cooler ran out of water which mean the ngine overheated and lost power. they use this in the harrier training at RAF Wittering and it is also a part of the flight simulation
