I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (February 27), I played this as the closing hymn. It is #840 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.
Thank you for posting this hymn. The author lost many family members in the Thirty Years War. It is a wonder he was able to write such a hymn in spite of the hardships suffered.
It is futile and unchristian to engage in such bickering. This is a wonderful hymn and if you don't sing it in your church, sing it with this recording. I would speed up the tempo a bit, myself. This hymn was written by a man who endured over 4,000 burials himself, including his wife and had every reason to be bitter and depressed, yet wrote this hymn and 65 others during the "Thirty Years War."
Yes, we would have sung it up tempo just a bit - not too fast or you lose that great emotion rendered by the words and meaning. You need to sing this at the top of your voice with great enjoyment.
@nonezoner my apologies. I should have looked at the earlier posts. You basically expressed my sentiments. I need not have posted except for the thank you.
Nun danket alle Gott! One of the great old worship and praise anthems of the traditional Lutheran Church. This is a great example of the original song and what you would find in a very large lutheran chuch or college.
It's me again. Today (October 4), I filled in at a local Lutheran Church. We sang this as the closing hymn. It is #839-840 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.
Unfortunately, in my Lutheran Church we are following all the newer hymns and liturgies. Call me old fashioned, but it is a great loss not to sing these wonderful old hymns of our youth with beautiful words and music.
Are you ELCA? We began using Evangelical Lutheran Worship in September 2007. We use the first setting for the liturgy. We try to sing hymns that have familiar tunes to them.
I grew up hearing this and other traditional hymns. Now, 30 years later I find they have more meaning and that they bring me closer to the love of Jesus that I fail to be worthy of every day.
With the eroding of traditional hymns we see the eroding of traditional values and as a result morals and behaviour in people is falling by the wayside. It becomes harder to love thy fellow man when they seem more and more likely to try to stab you in the back (metophorically)
Some of the contributors here need both the healing balm of the Holy Spirit (for their being caught up in the arguements of the 16th century) and a good psychiatrist for the damage this has done to their mental health!!
to frphilipmullen- in recent years there have been times when i was tempted to return to protestantism, yet i can't do it. i can't do it, because i keep seeing the vision of the clerical line of ordinations stretching from the apostles all the way to today. also there are bible verses agreeing with the vision. in my last days of being protestant, i received the vision of the clerical ordinations. by contrast, protestants ridicule the notion of clerical ordinations stretching back that far.
the papal position says that the bible is part of the word of god. not the only word of god. ,also, i was saying that the term "word of god" should not be confused with the term "word" as used in 1st chapter of john. the 1st chapter says that the word existed since the beginning, yet it doesn't say that the word of god existed that long. in those verses, i believe that the term "word" referred to jx, not the bible. if the term "word" referred to bible, we'd say that the bible was made flesh.
frphilipmullen--- i wanted to know whether you regard the papal church as non-christian, and i wanted to know how you define "christian".
------------------------
don't confuse the term "word" with the term "word of god." the term "the word" is applied to christ, a member of the godhead. i haven't heard the term "word of god" used that way. the term "word of god" refers to the words that god speaks. you make it sound as if christ is the word of god. i think that you made an honest mistake.
Since there is no way to the Father other than by the Son Jesus (aka The Living Word) in the truest sense how can the Papal church be of true Christian nature?
Jesus said "Where 2 or more gather in my name, that is my Church". He didn't say where 2 or more gather in the name of Mary, or in the name of the Pope (or anyone else that claims to be an intercesor.
to tomburley--- there are bible verses showing christians asking other christians for their prayers. thus christians would intercede on behalf of other christians, and christians asked other christians to intercede for them. sometimes we ask mary to intercede for us, yet i seldom ( if ever ) have heard someone claiming to gather in the name of mary. furthermore, the baptisms are done in the name of the father and son and holy ghost, and not done in the name of mary or the pope.

christ is man and god, and the bible is just an inspired book.
--------------------
actually, i don't re-call whether we discussed the following questions---- do you regard the papal church as non-christian? or do you regard her as an inferior kind of christian church? also, do you believe that lutherans are the only persons who can be true christians? if someone wishes to become a christian, does he have to join a particular church with the right clergy in order to do it?
to frphilipmullen-- in john 1, it talks about the "word". i believe that the term "word" referred to christ, not to the bible. the word was made flesh, yet the bible was not made flesh. christ existed since the beginning, yet the bible didn't exist back then. john 1 doesn't mention the bible. after the book of john was written, it later was combined with a bunch of other books, thereby forming the xian new testament, which was combined with ancient jewish writs, thus forming the xian bible.
Yes the bible is the only authority for christian doctrine, period.
Neither you nor me have anything to proclaim in God's name. Read it carefully and you will find out. You will find the trinitarian belief in the gospels. That's why our dear Lord was crucified.
Hold your big mouth and start reading the Word of God. By the way: there were believers from the beginning, they were called Christians after the Lord send the Holy Ghost.
to Holland2106----- you mentioned the strangeness of my youtube name. i chose it because i grew up in a neighborhood called "coventry gardens". in coventry gardens, the streets were named after towns over in england. i lived on surrey street, next to the funeral parlor.- i agree that the trinitarian belief can be grasped from the bible, yet i maintain that the early christians embraced that belief before the bible was written, and thus they didn't get that belief by reading the bible.
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. This past Sunday (August 24), I played this for our Sunday School assembly. Just thought I'd share.
The Original is German and sonuds '' Nun danket alle Gott, mit Herzen Mund und Händen, der große Dinge tut an uns und allen Enden ''. Beautiful song I like it. Best wishes from Germany

Can this be? Great Christian music on YouTube? YouTube? Hymns, even? Not some pop version sung by tone-deaf, lessonless 15-year old girls, to guitars and percussion??? Wow. Far out, man! Wait, does YouTube know about this?
Nice hymn. We are singing this hymn 11/20/11.

Dear TVnorth, I love this hymn but there is one voice which overwhelms all the others in the choir and it really ruins it for me. Great words though.

1. Nowhere it is writen that apostoles went to man for confession, nor was there a pope in the days of peter etc.. WHY???.
2. Nowhere in the holy Bible did apostoles decide to make images of mary & Jesus Christ although they knew very well what they looked like.
3. Nowhere in the holy Bible did apostoles pray to angels & dead people -"saints".
catholism disobeys the 1& 2 Commandment. It is written ye have eyes yet ye do not want to see, ye have ears yet ye do not want to hear..
