I love the food but do not recommend a visit yet.

A friend was there recently and has seen dead people in rivers etc.. India still has a way to go in terms of education and how the people organize themselves under the caste system for example that I personally find wrong.

I have great respect for India and some of it's traditions, but will stick only to the food for now.

well.. that happens in a particular place in India ... if your friend deliberately chose to visit that place and can't bear it, its his mistake. (its religious stuff which gets slowly reformed - hinduism has place for changing things).

You can always stay away from religious places and enjoy the kind of India that you want to.
