There are also emission lines of light at a very specific frequency which tell us the elements in a star. Scientists can even tell how old other stars are by spectroscopy since it reveals the ratio of radio active decay of elements for radiometric dating. U238 to decays into Lead206 in a half life 4.5 billion years, U235, 704, etc million to Lead207,
Michael Chrichton is a science fiction writer, but not climatologist. O3 molecules absorb light at the ultra violet frequency. The reason why each gas absorbs light at a different and specific frequency has to do with the fact that each atom is a different size; there are more electrons and electron shells in the larger atoms so it takes more energy for light photons to raise the electron from its ground state or lowest state to a higher shell further away from the nucleus of the atom.
When the Sunlight passes through the atmosphere of Mars it reflects back through the atmosphere and into a telescope with a spectrometer at the eyepiece. Always interesting hearing Ken speak. He is a true pioneer. I was struck by his point about how we often underestimate our capacity to move forward and provoked by another point: the reference to Michael Cryton's view that global warming is not happening. Climate science is very complex, but we must realize that we are talking about potentially irreversible and unpredictable changes. Fossil fuel usage also acidifies the seas, which can undermine the whole marine ecosystem.
here's why Michael Cryton says that global warming isn't occuring: because the ice-caps and albedo effect of increased cloud cover partially offset the increased CO2. Two important points extend from that though. First, since the icecaps offset the heating oceans, what happens once they've melted? Secondly, the increase in ocean evaporation that leads to more cloud cover, while reflection more radiation away, will also lead to increased catastrophic flooding.
99% of climate scientists believe in human induced climate change, which is a more accurate wording than global warming. That's an awful lot for something we would rather not be true, and that an awful lot of people are economically invested in not being true. Furthermore, industrial civilization, and the same processes that cause climate change cause a variety of more tangible damages such as toxic pollution, species extinction, rampant depression...
He is misinformed on climate science if he thinks Michael Crichton is a good source. Wilber mentions that some organization (IPCC?) predicted a 0.01 degree increase in temperature over the next century. Wrong. "You don't know if you are getting all the facts." Well, sure, there is always uncertainty in science, but the degrees of uncertainty are now low enough that fairly reliable predictions can be made. If you want to understand climate science, go to climate science literature not Fox news.
