...I suspect that Chuck might also own a trumpet with a Dizzy Gillespie style bell ( that Dizzy may have given to him???), but I have only seen one picture of Chuck ever playing a Dizzy upbell trumpet. - Dr. Michael E. Schmidt
... the horn you will see on most of his clips. Think of it this way, the flugelhorn with the lacquer bell is a Yamaha 631, and the flugelhorn with the copper bell in his latest clips is a Calicchio. Chuck plays on a Calicchio 1s7 trumpet, which is basically the only trumpet that Chuck has ever played on at a rare time when he does play the trumpet. You can hear Chuck play the trumpet on his earliest of recording, 60's era)...
Chuck currently plays on a Calicchio flugelhorn (that I suspect has a John Duda made bell) (1989, Chris Calicchio era) w/ a copper 6 1/2 bell. Chuck plays on a custom mouthpiece (Chuck told me so himself when I spoke to him in person and asked) that he had made to be similar to his original couenon mouthpiece, the mouthpiece that he used on his silver 731 (Chase the Clouds Away, + Feels So Good clip when Chuck was introduced by the late John Denver) , and his lacquer Yamaha 631 flugelhorn, ...
Oh, I just read through some more posts, and saw below that Mark Manetta passed away... so sorry to hear that. Was that really Gordon Johnson who posted below? :) Oh, love your performance in this concert too... everyone was great I thought! Love the bass solo on Hide and Seek!
I just love this concert video from 1989... I play it all the time!! I think the band members here were a great combination.... and to those who didn't recognize them, well there's Billy Martin on percussion (now of Medeski, Martin and Wood) and Rob Mathes (vocals, keyboard, guitar), Joe Bonadio (drums), Gordon Johnson (bass) and Mark Manetta (guitar). I so want this music on a CD as well... I don't have the know-how to grab the music from the video, unfortunately. The concert is great!
ho yeah, esther satterfield shines in this. las vegas baby. the sunrise painting the desert is something you'll never forget. and with this in the background, nothing could be better. layin in bed with the one you luv doesn't hurt either.
We played a Chuck Manjione show for our marching band show this past year and our band director said at practice on day, "Mand of Lake Believe". so that's what we called it from then on.
God, he was so f-ing young! Looks much better clean-shaven. Most people do. Where'd the time go?
I don't recognize any of the band. This must have been post-glory days, no? When was this recorded? Perhaps the 80s judging by the bassist's glasses and Chuck's shave. (What's with the spell-checker here, is it set to British spelling? Recognize is with a z in American English.)
The percussionist is Billy Martin, of Madeski Martin & Wood. The drummer is Joe Bonadio. I am the bassist, Gordon Johnson... Rob Mathes on keys, the late Mark Manetta, guitar...
I have a couple of bootleg performances by this version of the Chuck Mangione Band. I have to say, Gordon, I think you guys are so under rated. Mark (RIP) had some bitchin' solos in the live performances of Eyes of the Veiled Temptress." Billy Martin's Hot Consuelo is iconic in my mind. Love Joe's performance on "LoMB."
I remember seeing you with Chuck at the Newport Jazz Festival back in the early 80s. Excellent work. You must be one of Chuck longest member. Almost a decade? THANx
First - a flugelhorn is fairly difficult to play well as a lead horn. Second - depending on when during a show this song is played the lip tires some, and a few clams result. Now try listening to some of the greatest trumpeters of all time - especially jazz artists. Clams are a way of life for them, and lousy tone to boot.
I remember my father from this song. He use to be a musician, when I was 5 or 7 yrs old he use to listen this song to play it with his band. I almost forget... do.. ya remember "Los hijos de Sanchez"
if your looking for something seek its opposite. seeking perfection is only going to yield a miserable mean spirit of which there is no creative perfection only boastfull distruction.
@blackstar503 Creativity within restraint is art at its essence, but there is no harm in looking for control and skill in the paintstrokes either. I actually do like Mangione but I personally prefer a musician with a tad more control over his craft.
!!!Muy bueno!!!. Esto lo echaron en "Jazz entre amigos" de tve mas o menos en el año 90 y lo pude grabar en video, pero despues se me borro. Me ha encantado verlo de nuevo
Saw him back in 82 or so, with James Bradley, Grant Geissman, Chris Vadala and I don't remember who the bassist was (not Charlie Meeks). Also saw him in 90. Great shows. Great showman. Favorite jazz/fusion artist!
I wonder how many people know Chuck played with Art Blakey and the Jazz messengers, and while he was with tha band, played with keith Jarret, Chick Corea, John Hicks, and whole host of other fine musicians
@micahj One...he WROTE the music, and two, I would love to see you, or an accomplished horn player, play this, with the skill, and technique seen here. Please post that video for us.
b8tovene... First off, my point was this: the band is killer. They play well. But, Chuck, great at trumpet/flugel as he may have been, didn't do anything in this particular clip to demonstrate the depth of his abilities, or anything technically amazing or musically mind-blowing, in my opinion. Secondly, I'll save my time on putting together a rhythm section for long enough to play sterile Bb major Bird licks. If you really want to hear my playing, there are a few vids one this site.
Unfortunately for my argument (I guess...), none of them are "Land of Make Believe," so I guess it's not worth your time, lol. Just search "Micah Maurio." I'm not, nor have I ever implied that Chuck's not a good player, or that I'm better. We're certainly different though... (try to) Enjoy!
I like Mark Manetta, but his solo doesn't even comes close to Grant's on the Hollywood Bowl album for me.
In all honesty LOMB is one of my two top favorite songs in the world. I don't think I could give you a definitive answer as to which version of LOMB would be the best to me. They're all great sources of enjoyment.
I always listen to the Esther Satterfield version on Martin Luther Kings birthday.... which is today, BTW.
My comment was about the general feeling of this arrangement. I like Grant, but Chucks solos on this one are world class, the ones on hollywood bowl are a bit whimsical at times. Anyway, Chuck is the best, good to see him back in business!
@pkabel66 Oh yes...my brother Bill Blind (local drummer) and Mark were extremely close. And Mark treated my wife and myself like family every time we saw him. We miss Mark more than ever. Glad that I ran across this video ! Peace.
I think he looked better with the cape and the beard, but then again what the hell, its the music that matters! Great performance from Chuck, as always
I believe it's Land of MAKE Believe, not Lake Believe. The late Esther Satterfield vocals made this one of Chuck's most beautiful arrangements. Seeing him this Wednesday night in NYC. Can't wait!
Yo Esther died? Man I did not hear about that one.
I did a show with Chuck-I was the stage manager and he was real cool-Just hearing him warm up you knew you were in for one helluva show!!-Ya he allowed me to sit in one his sound check. I have heard a lot of musicians, with the job I had, but man this guy was a perfectionist-awesome talent!! and nice person to work with
@Qermaq A lot of clams?? You must be hearing things. It's not perfect but it is an outstanding performance of a wonderful song. If you're trying to analyze a piece for perfection, you're missing the point.
@Qermaq if your looking for something seek its opposite. seeking perfection is only going to yield a miserable mean spirit of which there is no creative perfection only miserable boastfull distruction. thats why chuck brings us that beautiful inspired music , there is why he is wonderfully odd.
I owe my Junior High band director so much, he got me listening to Chuck and Sonny and just a ton of other great musicians. I wish he still lived around here.

What a great solo and playing. This is the best I've heard Chuck play in a long time. Nice to hear him "in the zone" again. Last time I saw him perform was at his 1st appearance at the Hollywood Bowl. Now I've got to catch him again. Thanks for posting this.
