That game BLOWS!!!!! It has potential, but I think their servers must run vista.. I have NEVER seen so much server-side lag on an MMO in all my time playing them.... OMG, it's like they don't even have a computer for a server, instead, they have a guy doing the math on paper, then 5 minutes later, you get a response.. then you hit another button and wait some more.. then you get disonnected from the server, log in again, and go through the whole thing all over again. Greatly disappointed....
Great review. Poor game. I love Star Trek and Star Trek games but this one I have been trying with the F2P and it is clunky and unintuitive. The players movements seemed like a different take on the 3rd person view and there seem to alot of unneeded controls and option or they are poorly executed. Glad I didn't buy this.

The game sucks hard. Not only is it unfinished but it's ridiculously over reliant on instancing and grind. A typical mission involves killing ten enemies then repeating that ten more times just to complete a single mission. It never changes. It sucks hard. Avoid it like the plague.

What a moron, save that crap off your face. So you saw the beta and made a judgment on an unfinished version of the game. If you don't like it, don't buy it, more bandwidth for those true fans that are playing. I bought a life time subscription after playing both betas, the game is in a constant state of improvement and gets better after every patch. Why don't you actually wait till it has been released and try the real thing before you go bashing an unreleased game.
Star Trek is always told from the Federation's perspective. Having other races exist as factions you can train and use in PVP while not having much or any PVE content is fine with me.

As an avid MMO player, and a huge Star Trek fan, this game looks very derivative to me from an MMO standpoint. There is nothing "new" or "unique" about it.
Which we've not even seen yet, so who knows if it exists. From all reports this game is incredibly linear, unpolished, and plain unfinished. It needs six months more development time MINIMUM.
I still think it's hilarious that a guy who just said he's NEVER played an MMO before thinks this will be an innovative MMO game.

Im in beta and i can tell you the game...is...fun. Its that simple.. You unlock klingons at lvl 6 which doesnt take very long. Space combat and fleet actions give you a epic feel and the ground combat can actually really fun when your playing with friends.
Im also excited ACM but there are rumors that the game might be cancelled, and we haven't seen any trailers yet(except for the shitty teaser trailer with bad quality). So im concerned if game will even be released anymore.
The more hull damage you take, the more battle damage you take. Shields prevent damage - so if you are taking shield damage, your ship remains mostly there. You can customize your ship's looks and even paint job for the most part. Some parts of the ship will leak fuel and and have short circuits electrical parts. I agree about the diplomatic and abstract part. There are space monsters, though. Klingons... I AGREE and they need PvE.
the whole ship damage thing is understandable, but the problems i see since its combat based, think how annoying it must be to get into a skirmish with another ship and have to go to the nearest star base. so half the time you are going to have to go and repair your ship, that doesnt sound like fun to me (plus this will cost you a lot of in game money). Well thats all i have to say nice vid though.
Wait a second, you said that you couldn't damage parts of ships but this trailer specifically shows a galaxy class getting its right nacelle blown off.
i wish they would make the game like SWG with the space battles you had your own ship that you customized named upgraded. it was full 3d movement and you could walk around and see cockpit view while flying the ship.
@foxsneeker, There's a lot more customization in this game regarding ships that there was in SWG. And you can name your own ship too i believe. Plus i'm sure they're going to add a lot more to this game in the future. it's still in BETA so they have a lot of working room :) I pretty much LIVED in space in SWG and from what i've seen in this game so far, this game will warp straight past SWG's Jump to lightspeed

I don't think the klingons being unlockable will be a problem. It seems to me that they just wanted to make one short tutorial segment, so they made it for the Federation.

Good points were made here. As much as I'm also looking forward to interesting (and good looking) space battles I also really do hope for diplomatic/scientific missions. That actually rly is one of my concerns. Probably is very difficult to pull off, too.

It was half developed by perpetual they went bust and then then it was developed by cryptic. it just sounds like its going to fail right away. I don't base my theory just on that. Have you seen the ground combat? its awful, its like watching constipated stickmen run around shooting slow ass guns. Fleet combat is no where near as in depth or as well thought out as EVE's and for those reasons, i think this will fail. maybe not at the start as it will have a huge fan base but sooner or later.
Ive done that mission twice, once in a Cruser and once in a Science ship. Cruser was easy in a the Science ship it was harder but both times completed it without dying and alone. :D

I must say i am very impressed what they did today. 3.5 gig patch and a lot of things have been fixed and improved. most important thing is that GENESIS is now online woot, they had 2800 systems going today (doesn't randomly generate stuff what some people seem to think)
I don't think this dude in the video knows the history of the STO game, it's been passed around between 5 some odd development companies since 2004-2005. It's not going to be entirely Cryptic's fault.
It's giving me a bad feeling that this game isn't going to be that great, just like the Matrix Online, the original company botched it and SOE picked it up only to find it a waste of time. And secondly, it's Cryptic, they have the tendancy to host bad games.

Well if you wanna use the ST franchise, you gotta adhere to its principles i think. Or you can call it EVE.
They are adding nothing. There are 2 8 hours sessions left before they go open beta. NO ONE ON THE BETA FORUMS IS HAPPY. they did a poll how many people were going to cancel pre orders. Guess what? over 80 percent of beta testers have canceled it. So that adding stuff, this is beta is just bullshit. But you go ahead, keep drinking that coolaid and pretend everything is fine. And with their latest 10 gig patch they introduced more bugs than the game had at the beginning.
True, nothing will be added at this point. It will of course be added later with patches and issues... But you can't really judge an MMO for bugs at its launch. The important thing is: Will the game be fun, interesting and keep you interested for a long time? If yes then its a success, if not its a failure. Bugs comes with the MMO world... will take time to make it smooth, just like for any other MMO.

the game is in CLOSED beta. Nothing will change... they will only fix eventual bugs. It is set to release in a few weeks... nothing new will be added at this point without postponing the release date. We have to hope that future patches and add-ons will make the game even better.

Im in the Beta. Please guys, do not get your hopes up. This game is very basic with very little content and to top it off, it still needs 8 months of beta. Serious, do not think you get to explore space and find diplomatic solutions. All you get is kill xx and turn in for xp. PVP is even worse, not open world at all, just que up ala WOW, wait for pop and play some tag on very small maps, both space and ground maps are tiny. So tiny in fact that you hit the "roof" in space combat very easily.
Devs said more races will be playable later on. But I fail to understand why, unavoidably, MMO=combat. No exceptions... You can be a Starship Captain, a Superhero, an Elf and whatnot, but you always will gain XP by killing and use XP to lvl up. When will this concept of RPG be finally obsolete? Especially when it comes to STO, i WANT to explore, to have TENSE diplomatic issues, choices to make that will influence how my story develops... ah boy... lord knows when.
It's hard to pull off an MMO where combat is not a main source of XP. Explore: Great idea, but every bit you want to explore has to be created first. And, well, you can only explore once, sensibly. Afterwards you know it. Why should you get XP again? So to make exploring a viable source of XP, the universe needs to be VAST. Which means lots of dev hours. Or you end up with a game like Earth and Beyond, where explore-XP was a requirement but impossible to get due to a lack of size.
Diplomacy was tried in Vanguard. Now, to make diplomacy credible, you have to somehow get to where you want to negotiate. Which in turn makes you, as the diplomat, dependent on someone who can defend you, because little diplomacy goes on at home. And if it does... well, I'd guess the game would be as interesting as your average clerk job. Sitting in your office, being essentially an online relationship manager doesn't sound fun. You won't see anything new.

Although, when i talk about diplomacy i mean something more like: The random romulan ship decloaks ahead and the choice is yours to manage to solve the issue with some sweet talking or the hard way. And get XP in both cases... Anyway I understand combat is quite a necessity for an MMO, I only cross my fingers it will not have the feeling of ST Legacy and various clones... if i only have to point and shoot then it can be anything other than ST...
How should the game mechanic be? Scripted dialogue? I give it one week 'til every possible dialogue is available on some webpage. Also, how do you want to handle different levels, what's the difference between diplomacy with some Romulan runt and Tomalak?

I think the game will be alright at launch, as long as they keep up with updates after launch to fine tune it, we should be alright. I do like your video though, very nicely put together, i laughed a few times :)
you cannot be on your own bridge, you cant walk around your own ship, combat is buggy, ai is terrible, and you end up having a loading screen like every 5 seconds just to go from A to B.

For everyone: Beta is a state of developement where the game is to be considered completely finished. The Beta (testing) is the act of putting the final product live on test servers and allow a number of users to play freely as much as possible so that any eventual bug comes out and is fixed before the final release.
I have to say I disagree with part of the review. like unlocking the klingons. from what has been said it should be unlocked with in the first 3 to 5 hours of the game. also they have PVE content. the devs have said so. the races that you want to play mite be added later, but with the species creator you can make those species. the game engine that has been around for years. as for damage, its an MMO. if you have all this stuff happening in an MMO, you will lag. but its a good pre view.

As of right now, you only have the option to go into your own bridge, and no other sections of your ship, but that will be added in 6 month patch.
Klingons will have a massive patch at that time as well. Content is a bit rushed (thanks to CBS) but the team is entirely dedicated to making this an awesome game, plus - we're all trekkies.
he is wrong about klingons. They can level up on PvE only just like Feds, according to the devs. The no PvE content for klingons was never said by devs, what they said was taken out of context and blown out of proportions by trolls.

from what ive seen in the gamplay in star trek online is all the game is, is shooting people in the face thats as exciting as it sounds and it looks just plain boring so you should not take joes opinion seriouslt because hes has never played an MMO he doesnt know at all what there like

What a moron, save that crap off your face. So you saw the beta and made a judgment on an unfinished version of the game. If you don't like it, don't buy it, more bandwidth for those true fans that are playing. I bought a life time subscription after playing both betas, the game is in a constant state of improvement and gets better after every patch. Why don't you actually wait till it has been released and try the real thing before you go bashing an unreleased game.

Which we've not even seen yet, so who knows if it exists. From all reports this game is incredibly linear, unpolished, and plain unfinished. It needs six months more development time MINIMUM.
I still think it's hilarious that a guy who just said he's NEVER played an MMO before thinks this will be an innovative MMO game.

right on we are loyal and patient customers. and yes the game is being rushed and i know that htis game will never be what a true star trek mmo should be but hell hopefully it will be atleast fun. i wish they made a STO game that is alot like EVE but less complicated and with better combat. all in all it needs to be deep as hell with an endless possibility of thinks to do..... also cryptic you are absolutely wrong. we should be able to press consoles and do grunt work on a ship.

Im in beta and i can tell you the game...is...fun. Its that simple.. You unlock klingons at lvl 6 which doesnt take very long. Space combat and fleet actions give you a epic feel and the ground combat can actually really fun when your playing with friends.

The more hull damage you take, the more battle damage you take. Shields prevent damage - so if you are taking shield damage, your ship remains mostly there. You can customize your ship's looks and even paint job for the most part. Some parts of the ship will leak fuel and and have short circuits electrical parts. I agree about the diplomatic and abstract part. There are space monsters, though. Klingons... I AGREE and they need PvE.

the whole ship damage thing is understandable, but the problems i see since its combat based, think how annoying it must be to get into a skirmish with another ship and have to go to the nearest star base. so half the time you are going to have to go and repair your ship, that doesnt sound like fun to me (plus this will cost you a lot of in game money). Well thats all i have to say nice vid though.

i wish they would make the game like SWG with the space battles you had your own ship that you customized named upgraded. it was full 3d movement and you could walk around and see cockpit view while flying the ship.

@foxsneeker, There's a lot more customization in this game regarding ships that there was in SWG. And you can name your own ship too i believe. Plus i'm sure they're going to add a lot more to this game in the future. it's still in BETA so they have a lot of working room :) I pretty much LIVED in space in SWG and from what i've seen in this game so far, this game will warp straight past SWG's Jump to lightspeed

funny show. if you look into it they have alot of none combat stuff in the game inc the exporlation which looks good and adds alot of the trek feel. That being said how the heck can you go full star trek on a game! have us spend 12 hours hitting buttons on a consule. spend three days clicking content to talk a race into liking us>?? i hear alot of shoudl have should not have. how would you do it and make it fun and worth buying? i ask you?

It was half developed by perpetual they went bust and then then it was developed by cryptic. it just sounds like its going to fail right away. I don't base my theory just on that. Have you seen the ground combat? its awful, its like watching constipated stickmen run around shooting slow ass guns. Fleet combat is no where near as in depth or as well thought out as EVE's and for those reasons, i think this will fail. maybe not at the start as it will have a huge fan base but sooner or later.

Ive done that mission twice, once in a Cruser and once in a Science ship. Cruser was easy in a the Science ship it was harder but both times completed it without dying and alone. :D

On another note, today Cryptic had another 9 hour test. I must say i am very impressed what they did today. 3.5 gig patch and a lot of things have been fixed and improved. most important thing is that GENESIS is now online woot, they had 2800 systems going today (doesn't randomly generate stuff what some people seem to think)
there is hope yet.
Anyway, like your show, keep it up :)

I don't think this dude in the video knows the history of the STO game, it's been passed around between 5 some odd development companies since 2004-2005. It's not going to be entirely Cryptic's fault.
It's giving me a bad feeling that this game isn't going to be that great, just like the Matrix Online, the original company botched it and SOE picked it up only to find it a waste of time. And secondly, it's Cryptic, they have the tendancy to host bad games.

Have any of you, ever seen a ST serie, or film, where ships operates in such a way to have a tank, a damage dealer and a buffer/debuffer?? The Enterprise will repair quicker then the Defiant? Or do less damage? Is there anything a science ship can do that a cruiser can't in ST? Yes yes... the usual one will say "Devs needed to make an MMO". They are adding nothing. There are 2 8 hours sessions left before they go open beta. NO ONE ON THE BETA FORUMS IS HAPPY. they did a poll how many people were going to cancel pre orders. Guess what? over 80 percent of beta testers have canceled it. So that adding stuff, this is beta is just bullshit. But you go ahead, keep drinking that coolaid and pretend everything is fine. And with their latest 10 gig patch they introduced more bugs than the game had at the beginning.

True, nothing will be added at this point. It will of course be added later with patches and issues... But you can't really judge an MMO for bugs at its launch. The important thing is: Will the game be fun, interesting and keep you interested for a long time? If yes then its a success, if not its a failure. Bugs comes with the MMO world... will take time to make it smooth, just like for any other MMO.

the game is in CLOSED beta. Nothing will change... they will only fix eventual bugs. It is set to release in a few weeks... nothing new will be added at this point without postponing the release date. We have to hope that future patches and add-ons will make the game even better.

Im in the Beta. Please guys, do not get your hopes up. This game is very basic with very little content and to top it off, it still needs 8 months of beta. Serious, do not think you get to explore space and find diplomatic solutions. All you get is kill xx and turn in for xp. PVP is even worse, not open world at all, just que up ala WOW, wait for pop and play some tag on very small maps, both space and ground maps are tiny. So tiny in fact that you hit the "roof" in space combat very easily.

Devs said more races will be playable later on. But I fail to understand why, unavoidably, MMO=combat. No exceptions... You can be a Starship Captain, a Superhero, an Elf and whatnot, but you always will gain XP by killing and use XP to lvl up. When will this concept of RPG be finally obsolete? Especially when it comes to STO, i WANT to explore, to have TENSE diplomatic issues, choices to make that will influence how my story develops... ah boy... lord knows when.

It's hard to pull off an MMO where combat is not a main source of XP. Explore: Great idea, but every bit you want to explore has to be created first. And, well, you can only explore once, sensibly. Afterwards you know it. Why should you get XP again? So to make exploring a viable source of XP, the universe needs to be VAST. Which means lots of dev hours. Or you end up with a game like Earth and Beyond, where explore-XP was a requirement but impossible to get due to a lack of size.

Diplomacy was tried in Vanguard. Now, to make diplomacy credible, you have to somehow get to where you want to negotiate. Which in turn makes you, as the diplomat, dependent on someone who can defend you, because little diplomacy goes on at home. And if it does... well, I'd guess the game would be as interesting as your average clerk job. Sitting in your office, being essentially an online relationship manager doesn't sound fun. You won't see anything new.

Agreed. Although, when i talk about diplomacy i mean something more like: The random romulan ship decloaks ahead and the choice is yours to manage to solve the issue with some sweet talking or the hard way. And get XP in both cases... Anyway I understand combat is quite a necessity for an MMO, I only cross my fingers it will not have the feeling of ST Legacy and various clones... if i only have to point and shoot then it can be anything other than ST...

im in beta, the game is terrible.
you cannot be on your own bridge, you cant walk around your own ship, combat is buggy, ai is terrible, and you end up having a loading screen like every 5 seconds just to go from A to B.
and the interplanetary space travel is sooooo lame.. its like you are floating around in a "map" and you zone into the different star systems

For everyone: Beta is a state of developement where the game is to be considered completely finished. The Beta (testing) is the act of putting the final product live on test servers and allow a number of users to play freely as much as possible so that any eventual bug comes out and is fixed before the final release.

I have to say I disagree with part of the review. like unlocking the klingons. from what has been said it should be unlocked with in the first 3 to 5 hours of the game. also they have PVE content. the devs have said so. the races that you want to play mite be added later, but with the species creator you can make those species. the game engine that has been around for years. as for damage, its an MMO. if you have all this stuff happening in an MMO, you will lag. but its a good pre view.

As of right now, you only have the option to go into your own bridge, and no other sections of your ship, but that will be added in 6 month patch.
Klingons will have a massive patch at that time as well. Content is a bit rushed (thanks to CBS) but the team is entirely dedicated to making this an awesome game, plus - we're all trekkies.
