720p @ 9500 Kbps

1080p @ 1300 Kbps

Those are good rates to make Blu-Ray comparable copies. But depends on your setting and CPU thats decoding and encoding.

I'm not able to recommend any specific tool to make the MKV, because there are newer and better ones coming out almost on a weekly basis so one from last month won't encode as well as the one released last night.

If you whant to watch a MKV on your PC you can use VLC, windows media player, k-light codec, divx and many more.

If you whant to watch MKV movies on tv just buy a tv which can double as monitor and conect you PC :) because I doubt that there is a DVD player which can read MKV's.

better off watching this on a LED monitor as LED has a crisper image quality than an LCD monitor. I got my 22inch Full HD LED monitor for 159 pounds which is a pretty decent price

@vanilliiceman Don't think so there is a special converter though I believe made just for the ps3 to convert mkv files to another. This was over a year ago when I did this with my dbz collection so they might have updated the ps3 to play MKV files. So, i'd give it a try before converting if it doesn't a quick google search should do the job!

My monitor on my iMac has 2560x1440 and nothing that i've heard of yet has video beyond 1080p, so i cant seem to get full HD on my monitor...

The point is, don't be wanting anything over 1080p because there is no video for it.

@YOKID37 MKV and AVI are just containers. AVI can use the H264 codec as well. So no, it's not really better, with the exception that AVI has a limited filesize of 4GB while MKV doesn't.

dude... what you're saying in your description only goes for the ORIGINAL file... when you post it one youtube it get's re-encoded. It is not 1080p nor 24bit sound.

yes! Big Time! It has alkost double the resolution, so more data in the film=sharper image. But on a small tv it doesn't make a difference. You would need to have a FULL HD TV.

Actually the contrast ratio and colour quality of a 1080p video is noticeable, but the video is only downscale to 720p resolution.

So it's more like 1080i quality.
