Interestingly, Abe had issued "greenbacks" not backed by gold or silver coin (as the constitution requires), and FDR actually CONFISCATED the peoples' gold, exchanged it for paper money, and then devalued the paper 69%. Before TARP and the bailouts, it was the biggest theft in history.
