If a typical song is 5MB (size, format and length may vary), that's roughly 1500 songs for an 8GB or over 4000 songs for a 32 GB. Movies are larger in size and many people also add apps which require storage space. Your millage (and needs) may vary. -Matthew

You are not required to use internet but any apps that use streaming data (like YouTube, FB, Twitter, etc) require a connection. Also, you do need to be on an internet-capable computer when connecting to iTunes for the first time and for device updates.
