@ambereyes93 I agree. Ravel builds a lonely felling, the portrayal of the old castle is very vivid. Yes, to accomplish the purpose, Ravel didn`t use any brasses in this part, and all strings were indicated to be muted.
Actually the player is spot on. Counting in this piece is complex, and enhances the mystery to it all. Close you eyes and follow the lead. It flows and the orchestra follows. The Monk at the foot of the castle is alone, he's not singing to any conductor. This piece inspired my sax playing for years.
@thedestroyer62498 Actually, I'd high five Ravel if I were you. Mussorgsky died before he was able to orchestrate his piano composition. Maurice Ravel is the most famous composer to arrange this piece for full orchestra. Using the alto saxophone was quite innovative for his time; it had only just become a symphonic instrument.
i'm learning this, and my piano teacher keeps saying stuff like "oh in the orchestra version the french horns (for example) play this and it sounds AMAZING. so try to sound like a french horn here." and im sitting there like, "uh.....okay....i'll try to make the piano sound like a french horn.....how hard could it be?" :P
anyways though, i LOVE this piece. it's just........amazing.
WWWOOOOO BASSOONS!!!! hahaha it sounds better when we play it though haha hey steven we dont have to take ur parts if u grew a pair and played it louder haha :)
Just the mystical atmosphere created. There is no reason that a person with feeling would not enjoy such ... uplifting? Sensational music. Spectacular and awe-inspiring!
I really enjoyed Esa-Pekka Salonen's interpretation of The Old Castle best, but this is an excellent, and I mean Excellent, runner-up. This is the song that inspires me to continue music as my major in college.
I love this movement - I was watching an atomic bomb documentary a few years ago and this piece was used during the execution of ethel and julius rosenberg. The music perfectly matched the somber mood of the proceedings.
This piece is so melancholic. The music, along with the title, leads me to imagine walking alone through a huge and empty hall of stone, dimly lit by candelabra and adorned with dark, richly colored tapestries on a chilly fall evening.
Oh my god! This music is played in the Princess Tutu series! I recognized it the second I heard just the first few notes! But which exact episode was it from?
I'm sure if we commented on one of your favorite songs, you would be insulted too. It takes someone with a more developed musical taste to appreciate music like this.
and just because i don't like what you like dosen't mean to say i have bad taste, thats like saying "oh, you like red shoes and i don't so you're less developed"
To me this is true art, music art. It is full of emotion from happiness to sadness, emptiness and fulfillment. The true sense of human is showed here, it defines who we are as a specie. Now if you raise your head on a clear night while listening to this and look at the stars, it makes you really wonder who else may feel this experience and how really lucky we are to do this.
you have hurt my Russian friends feelings the jelly77, maybe you should apologize to them, that is not the reason they are great composers.what else would you do if you had to freeze your nuts outside to do something...
I like it just slightly faster, and those violin sure don't like using the lower half of their bows. They'll start way too many down bows near the tip, lol.
Fuck you, ass hole!!! For your information, I happen to be Russian, and there is a hell of a lot more to our lives and culture than just communism and sex!!! Communism is something that destoryed our nation and that we're still recovering from. So go and get some more information before you make stupid remarks about something that you don't know about!!!!
Viola, donT You think that this jelly might needed to have some experience...i am from hungary so... íand i bet jelly never had any experience on oppression or communism or any of the like.
And jelly is short-sighted enough, so I sorry him because he will never have vision of the great russion culture, which contributed to world culture more than he can understand. But leve him he will be this insular-minded...

Credit is also deserving to Ravel who I believe took the original score written for piano and wrote this orchestrated version - or am I wrong?
Ranmacos 3 years ago
thats correct! :)
Ravel also composed Bolero, another brilliant piece of classical music :)
Mussorgsky is wicked ;DD
