It is good to hear this Benedictine, sage like monk speak. IMO is the style of interviewing not fantastic ... I hope many independent, spiritually orientated communes will blossom around the world, where ppl learn to practice sacred methods of communicating with the Divine, where ppl till some land, grow veg, keep bees, bake their own bread, etc., aiming at diligently practicing compassion and kindness for all living beings, and sharing highest wisdom with those seeking it.

It strikes me that the life of these monks is inherently selfish, designed to facilitate their individual salvation. Of what altruistic merit is the life of a cloistered man who foregoes participation in the world to those who suffer? Absolutely none. Hence, monasticism is a selfish, hedonistic enterprise which attempts to barter Paradise with some medieval conception of self-renunciation. Why do these men not find God in refugee camps? Because their monastery cells are very comfortable.
Have you ever actually met a monk? Most monasteries, especially Benedictines, are very involved in the local world and interact with it as they must sustain themselves by working and are not given handouts from the Vatican or anything like that. Some monks do work with the poor, the homeless, etc, some are cloistered and never see anyone. There are all kinds of monks and they live in different kinds of ways. There's nothing wrong with that, there's no one way of life that everyone is capable of.
@xburningheavensx Are u working in a refugee camp? Do u maybe have a fam., friends, a job, so u work together with people, to be able to eat, sleep, do what u think u must do. Is that selfish?? Do u want to dictate to all existing groups living communally, they must chose your life style, or go work in refugee camps? Do u prefer corporate greed manifesting? on the spot where this commune creates a peaceful atmosphere, and for many a soul in trouble a shelter from the storm ..
I tell you my fellow Christians, that all the sins in this world is accountable to the churches, for if they only unite and upheld free giving instead of buying and selling, there could be no robber and thieves among them, nor is there a chance for athiestic view to rise. The Way of God had suffered abusive speech from the enemies of God because the churches are harlot.
Oh yes; very informative, enlightening, peaceful, and yet very inspiring video. Christ-centred life which seems simple enough and yet befitting to very humble and loving individuals only. A team of holy people serving God and man, in my opinion , as it should or ought to be done. Incredible bunch of people.
I like the history behind this monastic order.
Father Jiles seemed so relax, perhaps, the right word is humble. Humility at its best.
@josesilva9910 Of course he sounds like a communist...monastic communities are "communist" in the technical sense. (to Americans that will always sound like the worst possible insult). They renounce the ownership of personal property and (like the disciples in the Book of Acts) "hold everything in common". Monasticism remains a challenge to our consumerist, capitalist society where we can't even imagine a way of living that isn't based on the accumulation of possessions.
This is an excellent contribution to the internet--well informed and from a Benedictine who is seeking to live the life ... Challenging and inspiring. Thanks.

Which Scottish Benedictine monastery is this? Is it Pluscarden near Elgin?
Gowerwanderer 4 years ago 2
It is Pluscarden. I looked it up on McFarlane's site. Father Giles (Prior) is being interviewed.
