I agree that was an interesting sound at the end, entertaining never the less
I really liked your tone, but just as a little thing i think you'd get even better support with your air if you brought the oboe to you instead of tilting your head downwards towards the oboe, a problem i always have =/
your reed is too hard, you shouldnt have to struggle. listen to a couple recordings before publishing your own imperfect music because you never know who may be watching you struggle with simple rythms. nice attempt but you make this easy song sound way out of your league which is a shame.
Oh man,but i think that you're overall is still good. After all you're a better player than me.I hope that would i play as well as you in time to come.Seeing how others can play the oboe so well inspires me to carry on playing my oboe with enthusiasm.

You seem to be getting a lot of negative feedback. To be honest, I'd say deservidly so. But look at it objectively...if you were going to make a career out of playing this instrument, you'd already be in a conservatory by now, don't you think? Honestly, save yourself the disappointment and don't major in it. Because you'll be competing against people light years better than you, not necessarily in school, but in auditions for pro orchestras. I'd say minor in it and do it for enjoyment.
First- That's life if you say someone's going to be better than me. Someone's better than you. We're human we have to 1 up each other. I already knew that I'd have people better than me, For goodness sake- I have the number 4 oboe in the state of texas in my band.. I realize the competition. Second- This was two years ago. A lot has changed. and Third- Who said I was majoring in it? I'm majoring in photography- and you better believe there are people way better than me too.
That's entirely a matter of opinion. I played on a Loree for years until I decided that Howarth's were the way to go, and I got myself a Howarth XL. But while the bore of the oboe and the reed play a large part in someone's tone, the best thing, my friend, is the person blowing on all of that.

Considering how long you've been playing and your instrument, you should sound a LOT better than *that*! And if it's not your best then don't put the garbage on youtube. None of us want to hear it.
your like really good!!!!!! do you make your reads yet i learn't to do that about a year ago and it really helped my sound quality!!! (at first it sounded crap but then I actually got ok at it and devloped a stlye I like lol).
p.s when I played the saint-saens sonata (I was like 14 so it must of been 2 years ago) I tried to give the second mvt a more runing feel =) but you played it nicely
Ummm, her sound is absolutly fine. Where the hell are your oboe videos to prove your 'leet skils" ? Put up or shut up, and keep your discusting hate words to yourself.
Awesome job by the way, and you're right, that was an interesting sound. :)
Really common to see oboists playing their first note and going ....ARGHHHHHH!!!!! hehehehehe...
Hope we can get clips from a good day, cause' let me tell you girl, the other video of yours reminds to a gang hang out hehehehe....oh man.Not a critic just hoping you can share a performance situation clip.
Nice playing anyways.Loree are really good oboes.Seems like a lot of people are going for Lorees nowadays.
It was a long passage no wonder why it looked like you were lacking air.Don't you feel bad at all, plenty of pro musicians struggle, go bright red and have minor intonation issues.
This is going to sound like major justification on my part, but I was sitting improperly.. didn't warm up, and I was sick... Not that best situation for great playing, eh?
Hi, I play alto sax (and piano too) and was thinking about switching over to either oboe or bassoon. Is the oboe hard? I like its tone and I've heard some concertos for oboe, from Mozart. And I've also read that the oboe receives most of the major solos in orchestras and concert bands, so I am really considering it. I've read about scholarships too, hahaha. Do you make your own reeds? If so, is it hard? Fill me in please.
Oboe is a semi-difficult instrument, as all are when first starting out. Don't do it just cause they 'get all the solos' and 'get great scholarships', though this is true-- You kinda have to have passion to get either of those..
Don't play oboe with the wrong intentions, cause it's completely obvious when you do.
I don't make my own reeds, but I learn this year. And Yeah, it's difficult.
Thanks. Another thing that I'm worried about is the cost. I was just going to borrow one from my school, but I'm not sure if they'll let me take it home. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure if they have oboes! lol, Theres this girl who plays oboe and english horn in our school pit orchestra, but I'm not sure if they're hers (I doubt it though).
I've looked through a catalog and a student oboe is around $2,000! Just for a student model! I guess I gotta show my parents interest in it first.
hey pianofiend1 if any one at my school even showed the smallest intrest in the oboe the music staff would probally get the person an oboe/get the person a music scolarship/get the person free oboe lessons. so ytou should probally talk to some one about it lol
Oh, I didn't know it was actually you (the player) who posted the clip. Yea, I tried playing for a while and almost fell into a coma from lack of oxygen so I hear you!
Just saw you on another video laughing your face off at practice, you are so funny and fun . Thank you!
Clarinets are hard...but Not AS hard as obeo yet pretty hard...espically when your trying to get very high notes...very quickly..and its hard..very random
hehe its been a year .. sry that was german, i said "very beautiful tone". and watching this vid now, i'd say, yeah there may be some rhythmic mistakes, but i still like that sound. do you build your own reeds? if yes, then kudos to you^^ i make my own reeds and bit by bit they get better. its nice to play oboe and make own reeds, that way you feel much more familiar with your instrument^^ regards from germany
Ooooooohh, some vibrato. That makes a lot of clarinetists jealous. But why do oboists look like they're having heart attacks when they play? Whenever I look left at the woodwinds, all of the oboes are red in the face and look like their... constipating (I swear, I looked everywhere in the dictionary for a better word).
Clarinet, Trumpet, flute, anything besides oboe is easy to play-- In a way.
Those instruments have little to NO resistance, on the other hand oboes have to push [--------------------------] that much air into [-] that little of a space.
It takes a lot of PRESSURE to make a note sound, not so much air.
hey thats an insult to clarinets, it may not be as hard as the oboe put its still pretty difficult, you know? if you are that good put a clarinet flute and trumpet video
actually its like panicXOdisco said, its only the amount of blowing pressure that differs from other instruments, whereas the amount of air is indeed not that much. flute for example, uses much more air, because the air stream is not, like on oboe, focused on one tiny tip of the reed that is surrounded by the lips, but has to be directed on the metal edge of the head joint.
im just being silly. i didn't know people named their oboes. u play really well. try make the legato parts more legato maybe work on intonation a little but otherwise really good. maybe add some more dynamics. tell ur teacher i said that see if they agree. have fun..
This solo's dead and done with. I never have to touch it again, so thank you for the compliments and critques. I do agree with the dynamics, my dynamics are ALWAYS my worst part.
Nice, I'm on a howarth S5 and I absolutely adore her. I don't have any good reeds though so for the moment I sound slightly duck-like when I play. It's so infuriating!!! Great thing is that I am the only oboist in band at the moment and were are doing a load of Holst, Verdi and Wagner... my lips will be worn out unless I get some good reeds before next week. Again slightly more random information (slightly off the point but meh! I go off on tangents a lot apparently.) bye xx
I like saint-saens, fantastic piece. What type of oboe are you playing (I'm guessing from your thumb movement it's a conservatoire system but what??? Loreé, Marigaux, Rigoutat, Howarth, Fox, Adler???) You produce a beautiful tone though. Would love to hear more:)
humm you told me to practice to get a good soud like yours but i have another question what type and what brand of reeds should i get or should i find an oboe teacher to make them for me, thanks for yoou help.=)
I heart musicians, and I heart oboe players, so we should be fast friends. :) I played clarinet for awhile, but then I started doing colorguard and became hooked. Do you guys have a colorguard out there?
Gah, senior year... get a new oboe teacher. It takes lots of practice and hundreds of tries. Would your oboe teacher tell you to START playing scales in your senior year? Nice playing though. Remember, red face = new reed ;)
Good job. Do you have to do it from memory? Also, I think working with a metronome will solve a lot of issues; your tempo is good until you hit those F's with the grace notes on the upbeats.
Dang kristin i didnt realize one has to exude so much force to play that type of instrument. But your doing great and you are very talented.I like the direction lately you have been taking the videos. The others were fun and crazy but these have been showing the soft side of you.The inner thoughts and talents.Glad to see you posting again.

This solo's dead and done with. I never have to touch it again, so thank you for the compliments and critques. I do agree with the dynamics, my dynamics are ALWAYS my worst part.
Thank you :]
and only the normal people name their oboes.

pleasure. um ok but why would i want to be normal. normal = BORING!
bettiethebadger 4 years ago
Sarcastic.. I'm clearly far from normal, have you seen the rest of my videos? Hmm.
I'm pretty sure I named my oboe Karl cause I was kinda odd...
panicXOdisco 4 years ago
come to think of it......u are a little strange.....
bettiethebadger 4 years ago
I'll take that as a subliminal compliment :]]
panicXOdisco 4 years ago
Heh, if you plan to keep playing oboe, I find it unlikely you'll never touch the Saint-Saens again.
Arundodonax 3 years ago
.. I don't? This is my 6th.. almost 7th year?
panicXOdisco 3 years ago
Arundodonax has a point the saint-seans sonata is major repetoire for oboe =P
crappyoboeplayer 3 years ago
But, for sure I am playing this piece for my college auditions- this coming year
panicXOdisco 3 years ago

Nice, I'm on a howarth S5 and I absolutely adore her. I don't have any good reeds though so for the moment I sound slightly duck-like when I play. It's so infuriating!!! Great thing is that I am the only oboist in band at the moment and were are doing a load of Holst, Verdi and Wagner... my lips will be worn out unless I get some good reeds before next week. Again slightly more random information (slightly off the point but meh! I go off on tangents a lot apparently.) bye xx

my oboe is a He :] Karl is his name
panicXOdisco 4 years ago
I like saint-saens, fantastic piece. What type of oboe are you playing (I'm guessing from your thumb movement it's a conservatoire system but what??? Loreé, Marigaux, Rigoutat, Howarth, Fox, Adler???) You produce a beautiful tone though. Would love to hear more:)

liloboedude 4 years ago
Brand of reed?
My oboe teacher makes them.. Handmade- So I'm not sure.
panicXOdisco 4 years ago

liloboedude 4 years ago
Practice my friend :]
Thanks for the compliment!
panicXOdisco 4 years ago
I heart musicians, and I heart oboe players, so we should be fast friends. :) I played clarinet for awhile, but then I started doing colorguard and became hooked. Do you guys have a colorguard out there?
MelissaJenna 4 years ago
yes. and ours SUCK :]
panicXOdisco 4 years ago
looks like it's time for a new reed? Do you make your own?
learjet4 4 years ago
No, my reed was completely new. and I couldn't my lesson teacher to fix it.
I do not make my own, yet. I learn senior year.
I got a one on my solo though!
panicXOdisco 4 years ago
Gah, senior year... get a new oboe teacher. It takes lots of practice and hundreds of tries. Would your oboe teacher tell you to START playing scales in your senior year? Nice playing though. Remember, red face = new reed ;)
learjet4 4 years ago
My face wasn't red, i was sun burnt.
and get a new oboe teacher? Best in the state of texas.. and you tell me to get a new one.. er no.
panicXOdisco 4 years ago
wow that was awesome, i cant play my vlarinet as well as you can play the oboe! good job :]
JordonQ 4 years ago
Good job. Do you have to do it from memory? Also, I think working with a metronome will solve a lot of issues; your tempo is good until you hit those F's with the grace notes on the upbeats.
Arundodonax 4 years ago
It's all from memory, and this was a terrible fun through :]
Yeah, my worst part is this section and that's why I posted it I guess
Metronomes just really throw me off when it comes to the grace note part because it's really awkward
panicXOdisco 4 years ago
ohoh im going there too :]
DaveandtheTaco 4 years ago
In Texas!? no.. i doubt it
panicXOdisco 4 years ago
