@vladimirtalijan Totally not true. It depends on the scene. Ever seen a Ridley Scott movie? Saving Private Ryan? Faster shutter speeds are taste, not a rule. Sorry. To be precise it's 1/48th to pull off the 180 degree rule too.
@vladimirtalijan Film is an art and there are no rules in art. No limitations. There are methods and techniques. Knowing them and what they do and why people do them is key. The first key to unique Cinematography is thinking and PRACTICING outside of the box. Trying new things. If no one ever did we wouldn't have the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan. Do I shoot at 1/48th the majority of the time? Yes. Do I have any problem going up when I want a scene to be intense? No.
@Neumannfilms so so true.... but in terms of shutter speed, what type of scene or setting would it be appropriate to increase the speed? I know when having 24fps they say one must would the shutter speed to 1/50. what abt for fast moving objects on a road or something, do i increase the shutter speed for those kinda actions. also for like fight scenes whats the best shutter speed to use?
@Neumannfilms Off course, but you are trying here to teach beginners how to make a film look, and you have to say "the rule is 180, but I am doing this 1/200 because of....". Vast majority of movies are using that rule, and in this tutorial you're talking like 1/200 is a normal thing. No, it's not, faster shutter speeds are used in action and fast paced scenes, and they are just making oposite of film look. You should be using 1/50 and ND filters for this one.
@vladimirtalijan Well, I did a Shutter Speed specific tutorial where I talked about this a lot more. I believe in this one I made it clear that "this is just how I like to do it".
Wow, easily the best tutorial ever. I like it b/c I don't know much about aperture and f stops and all that, but seeing those numbers there with the footage along with the brief explanation in the beginning helped alot. Great job
Nice tutorial ^_^ It's really getting me wanting to buy Canon 550D more and more. The only thing that worrys me is that is it a camera worth learning? I'm used to using a Panasonic AG HMC151E and a Sony PD 170 for University and College which seem more industry standard. Is it wrong to learn a diffrent type of camera that I might be using when I get into a filming company? I mainly want to shoot short films and music videos.
dude great work man you have step my music video game all the way up i just start filming for about 3months now but i have some work i did y/switchbladeinc thanks for the great tutorials
Iam really inspired by this tutorial, you have amazing skills, great work, love the cinematography, it does really look like film. Iam doing my transition into DSLR's and i think this is the cam i will be getting. Thanks a lot for sharing.
Where is this place?! It's so beautiful! especially that background at 3:40! I'd love to shoot there. Just a question, what lens(es) do you recommend for shooting films? I have the kit lens, a 55-250, a 50 1.8 II, and a 10-20. any other must have lenses that wont make me bankrupt? D:
Nice video :D just one question, I just got the canon 550D, i'm new at making videos with this camera and I wanted to know how you got the effect that we can see at 8:58-8:59 where the focus changes from one face to another I think it's pretty cool :D thanks :D
As always.. your tutorials are the BEST! Thank you for taking your time to make them. They have helped me alot. I was wondering about the shutterspeed. I have hurd it should alwasy stay at 50 if u use 24 frames video. And also that it should stay the same during all your sciens in your film. Is this recomended from you aswell? I hope to send my videos to film festivals.
What are the benefits of having zoom lenses - since I'm ONLY going to be using a t2i for films surely I'll only need a prime lens (50mm f1.8). I'll be staging my shots all the time. Someone help me!
Oh no! (Or yes...) I was planning on getting the Nikon D5100, but now I want this one because of the video capabilities! The only problem with that is that I won't be able to put the lens on my dad's old nikon film camera :( wah.
Thanks for these tutorials, man. I'm definitely going to be getting a t2i now that I know what it can do. But before I go out and buy one, how bad is the rolling shutter exactly? Because I have noticed that you always have static shots, and in my movies I like to have a lot of handheld. Would this be a problem for me with the t2i?
@Droege1001 Not if you keep the Shutter Speed at 1/50th, or use a Glidecam, or...if none of those, try to not shake the camera TOO much.
I love fast shutter speed and handheld but it's all about how you move the camera. If it's jarring movements, it's obvious. If Shutter is at 1/1000th you'll notice.
It doesn't stop me from shooting handheld or with Fast Shutter Speeds
Awesome video. I'm at the NAB in Vegas right now and all the gurus are saying that the shutter speed has to be limited to twice the fps (basically 24p->1/50s) due to the 180 degree shutter translation... but you just demonstrated to me in this movie that they have no idea what they're talking about and that as long as you don't have a lot of fast motion it doesn't make a difference if you shutter speed is at 50 or 250! Put those neutral density filters aways!!! Great job man! Keep 'em coming!
great video Luke, but i really recommend that you upload your video's to vimeo as well, the quality is noticeably better than youtube (they don't use as much compression as youtube does)

@marksest I go back and forth. It always depends on content for me. I love high shutter speeds but if you have too much camera movement you get the "rolling shutter" issue. I don't mind going to 1/200th and having small camera movements.
Hi there, Im confused about this rule, it says that if u want that film look you must use a shutter speed of 1/50 if u are filming at 24fps, and 1/60 as fot the 30fps, right? but why using faster shutter speeds?
It is nice to see that you took this time to go into the process of the Film Look aspect, great work by the way, wow.
I was wondering where you had bought the tiny very usefull dolly/travelling bars, I woudl love to buy this model, as I have been lookign for such since a logn time, as I bought the T3i, and it coudl help a lot.
Hope to hear from you soon, and for your next projects.
@marksest Not a huge fan of the shallow depth of field to begin with...overdone in my mind. Also, a lot of these shots used the Canon 55-250mm IS which doesn't go below 5.6 at certain zooms anyways.
@Dod3032 I see, I'm actually quite surprised you could isolate the subject as well as you could at those high apertures. Was that because of the distance of the background compared to the subject? I currently set up my t2i in a way that all the other settings revolve around keeping the aperture as low as possible, but I think I may start experimenting with higher f stops from now on. Thanks for the great tutorial.
Just got the t2i to shoot music videos and short comedy films. I Tried out video yesterday for the first time and it looks like I will be crawling the internet for perfect settings to get that "film" look. ha! This will help alot. Thanks!

THANK YOU FOR THE COMMENT ON THE LENSES!!! You can have great shots even with the 18-55mm lens! I've been telling people that ever since I bought the T2i. You just have to know what you're doing.
Really useful information, thanks! Do you always shoot on 'Cloudy' white balance when shooting out doors? Even when it's sunny outside? I've been shooting custom, just curious, because that footage looked extremely vibrant and colorful.
