  • good looking kata

  • IT DOESNT FREAKING MATTER WHO CREATED IT OR WHATEVER!

SENSEI KANAZAWA IS OLD AND HES STILL TRAINING. STOP ARGUING YOU ARMCHAIR WARRIORS AND GET YOUR ASS OUTSIDE AND TRAIN!

Hes a inspiration to watch! For you who understand what this is will appreciate it for those who dont shutup, you shouldnt be here in the first place.

  • this kata was well one by master kanazaw himself

  • i KNOW HE IS NOW OLD. i HOPE THAT IS THE REASON HIS KIAI IS SO WEAK

  • If I could die half the karateka that Kanazawa sensei was, I'd die believing I had accomplished something.

  • ossu...

  • Lets remembe that the Original Masters studied under the same Instructors (most of the time) Naha-Te. Until there was separation and creation of individual Styles they separated Kata for their own use in their curriculum, and left out some, and some were lost as well.

    Oneigas Shimasu

  • oss

gosh what i have to learn more DxDx

    im learning Dion cool kata

    but Nijuhachiho is whay cooler

  • oss!

  • Se ve la influencia que la practica del Tai Chi tuvo sobre el Sensei Kanazawa en esta kata. Lo conoci personalmente en Las Vegas y es alguien que irradia poder y harmonia.

  • when he made this recording???

    look that moves!!!

    Hirokazu hawe 78yr.

  • Genius!!!!

  • he is the greatest imho

  • я тоже первый раз вижу это ката. но оно очень сложное и длинное

  • Likely, theres alot of open hand movement (pushes as a pose to karate blocks) like they do in Tai-Chi..

  • Oss

  • its osu =D

  • @Patcherson Yup it is, most people or i should say budo practicioners have little knowledge of Japanese and their tendency to add letters like u at the end of the word. Like in desu it sounds like desss.. but if you listen good you can hear the very silent u sometimes ;)

    Osu!

  • OSU

  • We do 2hour training sessions each Shotokan week here in Australia dedicated to Tai Chi. He apparently altered the Tai Chi Yang style which he believes is suited for karate. A balance between Hard ans Soft. Kancho loves the idea of balance and harmony

  • when ever i see this Master preform i learn so much from him. every time something new. he is a true Master . i train with JKA. my teacher was the late Shihan Hideki Okamoto

  • Im with SKIF Australia, and even though there is underlying rivalry between JKA and SKIF its great too see how we can both respect each other in the proper Karate-ka way

  • Kata Shotokan?????????

  • oss

  • Kata wihtout application is just a dance rather than a martial art. I wish they would do these videos with attackers wich would shoe the function of the moves.

  • He's just like my sensei! but a little bit more better ^^

  • That was... Great.

  • this kata has movements that really remind me of certain naha-te kata, like kurunrunfa..i guess it proves that all karate has similiar roots

  • and it also looks like Kanazava now like shito-ryu style more than shotokan instead of developing and advancing shotokan

  • it looks too much artificial, not natural...

  • FYI, This kata has direct links to the Shuri styles; i.e. circular, triangular movements. Thought to be lost, it has been within the Shorinjiryu system for many many years. In a softer perhaps original form, the Taoist Tai Chi stylists practice this same kata in their advanced, somewhat faster form. (movements of the snake and the crane, mongoose and the cobra, etc.)

  • I like the younger Kanazawa better.

  • Does anyone know how old Kanazawa was when this video was made?

  • he will turn 77 years old in October

  • he will turn 77 years old in October.

this kata comes from white crane

it is old kata that was disapearing.

he did not invent the kata. He was trying to preserve it.

  • Hey, thanks for your competent answer :)

  • He may have lost some speed, but he's gained tremendous fluidity and his kime is dead on.. Kanazawa is the best

  • that's because he's been practicing Tai Chi Chuan much to the dismay of the JKA that only knows the work "Ki" and not "Chi".

  • he did not invent that kata, he did create one called "Gankaku Sho" for his 10th dan grading (given by masters not only in karate but in many martial arts, and the emperor of japan), back in 2002 i was in a class with kancho Kanazawa and he told us, nijuhachiho is an old kata, he convinced an old master to teach him the kata so we could keep it trought history, because it was going to disapear with that old master with no students, or something like that.

  • He did not create Gankaku Sho, it is almost exactly the same as Tomari No Chinto, which was created by Chotoku Kyan.

  • Those people which are within a style of martial art do define, what is still part of a martial art.

  • @zerosenpai He did not create Gankaku Sho. It is HIS version of Kyan's Chinto.

  • @zerosenpai He did not 'CREATE' Gankaku Sho. He just incorporated it into the Shotokan syllabus. It is in fact his rendition of (Chotoku Kyan) Tomari Chinto. If you search "Chinto Old Style" you will see the kata in its original form.

  • @zerosenpai He did not create Gankaku Sho. Gankaku Sho is the Shotokan version of Tomari Chinto (also known as Kyan No Chinto - look it up on YouTube). Similarly, this is Shotokan's version of Go Kenki's Nipaipo. Shotokan also adopted Goju-Ryu's Suparinpei and it's called Hyakuhachiho.

  • it reminds of kata i did years ago form shorin ryu. hawever i dont remember the exact moves but it looks like this one, now that it comes to my mind

  • one of the best performances i ve seen and to me the best kata i ve seen. so many tecniques in it that you can mix and train with

  • the reason it looks so different is, he made it up himself. he studied tai chi and mixed it in with karate movements. he certainly makes his own rules, i admire that.

word is that the iskf has broken off with the jka and now is with kanazawa karate. i couldn't be happier.

  • ISKF did break off with JKA, but we didn't join with anyone, we're just our own independent organization. I think some confusion might have come up because Sensei Kanazawa accepted our invite to come to Master Camp last summer, which typically only involves ISKF instructors (and JKA before the split).

  • This is soul of karate it is sheer poetry. It always looks easy, but when you have to do it, all of a sudden you have no clue even how to begin. True mastery

  • legal

    kk

  • "Not bad but very slow"??? Kanazawa is in his 70's now (77 or 78). He won the first all Japan title in 1957. He broke his hand prior to the tournament and still won every single fight on his way to the title! If you want to see how fast he was I suggest you look at KANAZAWA KARATE KUMITE DISPLAY. The video has been put on by ROCKY 44

  • i have been training shotokan karate for about 17 years and i have never seen this kata, not evenat word championships and from other styles, i also see no similarities between this and nijushi ho. still would like to learn this kata

    peace

  • That's because Kanazawa sensei made it up. It's kind of a... controversy? I dunno. I think some of the other big sensei just think it's amusing. He's a seriously great master though. Don't get me wrong.

  • he is mean as he came New Zealand and came to our karate dojo yesterday and tought us there were like 50 people there and the day before i was there and only like 15 people were there

  • I'd bet he got the accent wrong.. :D

  • This guy really is great.

  • And i'd just like to say to everyone, i've been acting really obnoxious and childish, so i'm very sorry, will you please forgive me?

  • Kanazawa is so amazing, i respect him deeply.

  • Kanazawa sensei !

A true legend and one of the last great teachers.

    Nohing but respect for him.

    His Karate isSo beautiful.

    Thanks for this clip.

  • HIs karate is so beautiful largely because his basic techniques are perfect. The man can do no wrong.

  • Good to see the master in action these days. The Bruce Lee of Shoto's House

  • Orbelus, My GOD! This man is amazing! very good kime. tadashi"hollywood"yamashita should go to this man and learn from him. Kanazawa Sensei is a true master!

I hate yamashita, he ruined Shorin-ryu karate for me.

tadashi is money hungry, contract signing bastard. Tell your student not to get fooled by yamashita or join any of his McDojos! KANAZAWA Sensei is awesome!

  • his hands are so fast! :P

  • Please respect SKIF and its graduation system. There are no such think as red belts. And don't look at graduations and belts as a way to climb up the ladder, use karate and development of charater as your final goal, graduations will come naturally. Practice karate as karate, not as sport.

  • At our school, red belt is 8th kyu.And i'm not doing any of those things you said. Like, you're climbing a mountain, trying to find the way. You ask somebody what the way is, too busy trying to get to the top, when you haven't even appreciated the beatiful mountain and lake beside you, that kinda thing. I like to look at the mountain and appreciate the wonderful lake, rather than be so determined to find 'the way'. Karate takes time, i know that.

  • And who said i wasn't respecting SKIF, it is the world's largest and most respected karate organisations, why would i do that???

  • Good but are there any videos on this site with Karate masters such as Kanazawa is proper fights?

  • Sorry about the breifness of that comment, by the way, I had to shorten it alot so that it could fit in :P Did you hear about that 2 year old who got her red belt! Omg! Lol

  • Thanks! I'm hoping to get my Shodan in September. I started training 3 years ago, so that seems about right. Omg I'm competing in this tournament soon, it's the first one i've ever done! Apart from this random club one like 2 years ago...Anyway i really hope i do go to Japan some day, it sounds really awsome.

  • 3 yrs to get ur shodan, were u fast tracked? lol it takes 5 or more years on average, it used to take 10yrs and the grading would b impossible, how come it only took 3? do you do freestyle karate? does ur dojo do a lot of competitions?

  • It is really weird that someone can go for shodan test that soon. In our dojo students have to wait at least 1 year after ikkyu, so the total time comes basically to 5-6 years of hard training. However, I've seen a lot of Americans with brown and black belts, who know nothing in karate, but paid a lot of $ for gradings. If you attend seminars with prominent karate masters you'll never go wrong.

  • After first kyu we have to wait at least 6 months to go for Shodan. Most people wait about 9 months to a year or more at our club, no longer than 2 years. Just saying this - I'm not American, i love and know alot about karate and Japan + the Japanese language AND i only pay £15 for a grading lol. I wasn't saying you were aiming that at me, because i know you weren't, but i'm just saying lol :D

  • Well, it depends not on the number of years, but on the number of hours. If you train 6 hours per week, it will take you 4-5 years to get your black belt; but, if you train 15-20 hours a week, then 2-3 years seem right.

  • I've changed my mind now anyway, and have decided to do it next year in March, that way i will have been doing karate nearly 4 and a half years.

  • Weird.

  • I'll take your word for it, oghabealborz. It was indeed a fantastic display by a true master...Kanazawa looks quite young there, doesn't he?

  • I think his age is deceptive because, like Sensei Enoeda, he's never lost his hair or gone grey.

  • como mierda te bajo

  • Dear Cristianbrecht, do you do it better? It is difficult someone be at the lever o Sensei Kanazawa, of course there are, but I know what is respect.

  • I think Kanazawa is truly great, but as for the Nijuhachibo kata itself, it does not seem too technically challenging, that's all I am saying.

  • Maybe thats the hardest challenge: do it so well that looks easy. Katas like nojuhachi ho and tekki shodan are realy minimalist but so hard to do perfect that you'll have to do them one million times to become a real karateca.

ps: sorry I don't know how to say karateca in english...

  • karateka

  • The kata does not seem too technically challenging

  • does anybody know how old Kanazawa-Shihan is on this vid?

  • About 73

  • I bet Kanazawa's got the hump about this. He's trying to sell a DVD of the kata. Well at least I haven't got to splash out on it now!

  • since when did he become 10th dan. thought this was only given one by gichin to himself on his deathbed. Anyway 9th or 10th it seems he never uses his right to wear the red belt and stays with black

  • His 10th Dan was awarded by the All Japan Karate Association, a separate body that covers all Japanese Karate styles. Funakoshi was actually 5th Dan at the time of his death, his 10 Dan was awarded posthumously as Dan ranking systems changed over time. In 20 years training Shotokan, I have never seen a red belt used for rank.

  • And red belt is 8th kyu w4z4r1.

  • Actually that's a western adoption by only a few schools. Generally traditional schools use brown for 8th and 9th kyu. I've trained extensively with ITKF, ISKF/JKA, and the KUGB, but primarily with SKIF. These represent the 4 major schools founded by the original JKA instructors under Nakayama. Not one red belt seen, including 10 training trips to Japan.

  • Sorry, total brain melt down, reversed kyu ranking in my head. Any way, yellow is most commonly used for 8th and 9th, where it's used at all. OK, going to sleep now ;-) PS: Shame you can't remove a mistaken comment. DOH!!

  • Cool. With our school,it goes like this; Orange belt-9th kyu Red belt-8th kyu Yellow-7th kyu Green-6th kyu Purple-5th kyu Purple with a white stripe-4th kyu Brown-3rd kyu Brown with a white stripe-2nd kyu Brown with two white stripes-1st kyu-my grade! Black-1st dan. And WOW you've trained with the JKA???And WOW you've been to Japan??? Lol i haven't seen much, i'm only 13 :P. What's it like in Japan? It's like, a totally different culture. I can speak a little Japanese, i'm learning it.
  • Cool, you are so lucky, I wish I started training when I was your age. If you're still training 19 you'll be an awesome competitor. I got really lucky for a while and had a job that took me to Japan every year, so, I'd stay and train after work. It's really great, you'll go one day, and, you'll love it. Good luck on your sho-dan

  • red & white belt (stripes going widthways not lenghthways) is sometimes used by the senior instructor, when there are numerous black belts in the dojo.

Not really a sign of rank, but simply so folks (especially kids) know which 'black belt' is actually in charge!

You dont see it often, depends on persoanl preference.

  • I have both volumes of sensei's complete Shotokan kata guide, in which there are 25. Then again, that was published YEARS ago, and he is renowned for traveling and ferretting out things to add to his knowledge.

  • fantastic display by a true master !

  • there are 26 kata advocated by the JKA, which is shotokan. But karate all around there are well over 150.

  • 25500 is right on the shotokan side of things theres 26

  • Well, I talk about what I do, Shotokan. It has 26 different katas.

    see ya.

  • I read that the number could be as high as 50.

  • It depends on the stlye of karate.

But you can think its around 20.

  • 60 listed only in Shito Kai school...

  • Wow another advanced kata demonstrated by Kanazawa. Does anyone know how many katas there are in the world of karate?
