The law is clear. If someone attacks you with lethal force, you can use lethal force as self defence. This is the perfect example. If a man attacks you with a knife, you can use a knife or a gun to defend yourself. If a man attacks you with his bare fist, however, you cannot shoot him because doing so would be unreasonably excessive force. So it is all about the level of the threat versus the level of self defence. Self defence must be proportional to the threat. This is not my opinion but law.
