For 8 years we were on 512kbps with ISPs saying "dont worry you'll get 8mb later". No we didn't. Now we're on BT Infinity at 40mbps, except its actually just 20mb. Also with a 100gb monthly limit.
@07Patty You'd think that but it's rendered bad because for 1 second every 3 seconds the connection just drops. It makes doing anything online painful, like having a Ferrari and tapping the break every 3 seconds when you really need to get somewhere. We had less problems and a smoother connection back on 512kbps!
I am with talktalk I signed up for the 8MB package with 40GB download limit the speeds I am getting are around 3MB not good sort it out TalkTalk .... oh and BT where even worst before I changed to TalkTalk
I always get high 9's from my 10mb VM connection....only a hole thing about it is their "fair use policy" of capping users if they download more then 3gb of data during peak hours and you will then be auto restricted to 2mb....which is crazy, that limit in an age of HD programme watching via BBC Iplayer for example, what 3 shows can use up 3gb no problem!
i have had virgin bt talktalk and sky using all their highest speeds still get 3mb max and i live in london bt exchanges in this country and goverment are a joke only just got fibre optics in some area even then we using phone lines from 1950's uk is a joke for internet
Broadband speeds will not improve to get more consistent higher speeds until the network is upgraded, well for those of us who have a non fiber optic connection anyway, there is only so much the non fiber optic connection can achieve. Also the exchanges are not build to handle the increased broadband traffic, so if you have an upto 8Mbps connection it is not so bad but if you have an upto a higher speed then and your not getting the full speed or even anyway close it sucks.
"upto" broadband is just depending on your phone line how is that the ISP's fault? BT are the ones controlling the DSL exchanges and for cable service are the only reliable service and you get your speeds
How do they expect the companies to get rid of the "Up to" advertisements? They are delivery a technology which is indeed capable of "Up to" 2/8/16/24Mbps. It's all dependant on distance from the exchange, which is out of providers hands.
I think what most ISP's do now is fair enough. They give you a rough estimate of the speed you can expect before you sign up. What more can you ask for?
This campaign is a waste of time. Campaign for FTTC/FTTP coverage instead!
@bassdemon16 I think the point is like me I pay for 8 mbps was told that was what I would get till I had it connected and its a 4mbps if I am lucky on that day to be fair its not totally the isp fault its are stupid goverments who will not invest in the broadband links we need so we can all get super fast but the isp should tell you when you buy the speed you will get not the speed you are paying for
You're not paying for 8Mbps. You're paying for the technology that can deliver 8Mbps in good conditions. No ISP can provide a completely accurate speed estimate until the connection is up and running. How can you expect an ISP to advertise each and every individual customers speed in advertisements? "Up to" is the best they can do.
@bassdemon16 I am not paying for 8mbps maybe you should have told 02 and me this when they sold it me as 8mbps thats the point
and if they cannot tell you what speed you should get then how come when I rang because at the start it was nothing but connection problems they told me the only speed I can get is 5mbps because of how close I am to the exchange
so they do know and can tell you at point of purchase they just choose not to do so
Well I'm always at 19.45 and I'm on 20, so I don't complain, tested the site and that's still confirmed. I will say though, your complaining about the use of "Up to" well how about 3 options on the site instead of faster or slower than expected? How about, what I expected?
omfg our internet got caped by fu*king virgin we were suposed to be getting 10 mb but apparently can only get up to 2 mb when we download 'too much' WTF!
ohhhhh SH*T I JUST DID THE FU*KING TEST AT MIDNIGHT AND IM GETING 1.89MB DOWN WTF AND WAIT FOR IT 0.05 MB UPLOAD!!!!!!!!!!!! THUMBS UP IF YOU THINK THIS IS INSANE!
I only got 3mb at midnight when I should be getting 16, that's just under 19% of what I should guess (I won't name names but the provider has a large arena at north greenwich station)
50meg = 1-2mb 20meg = 0.5-1mb 10meg = 0-0.5mb, it's pathetic really, but imagine downloading at 50mb/s lol that would be funny, we won't see that anytime soon, the uk is one of the worst countries for Internet speed, 17.5% vat and it's all wasted on crap like statues and new motorways, lol
I recently had my modem replaced which has supposedly upped my speed to 9 point something but the reason for the replacement was Viruses causing traffic so to speak and one of the sites unfortunately to say that caused the Viruses was the Gadget Show website. No Joke so just be careful.
@Mariathesubscriber speed. how much you can download in a certain frame of time. in this case, Megabits downloaded per second. How much you use in a longer time frame, like a day or week, isn't the issue.
huh on my isp i get 78.80Mb's Download 41.07Mb's upload on speed test . net and a ping of 9 ms so i't pretty fast i can download at 11mb's a second from most of the sites but not all the time it all depends on the traffic .(not UK but still in Europe)
@Fezztecfilms Want to know what to do? The thing these guys didn't say to do in the video. Call them up. Honestly, it will rocket after that phone call. They'l give you a lame excuse.
@Birdiejb94 did not work for me I should have 8 on o2 I am lucky if I get 4 my speed drops massively I ring them they sort it a week later its back on the floor
my internet speed is 0.8mbps thats right not even 1 meg! i live in a fairly large village about 5 miles from he town where the exchange is, some of my neighbours receive double or more of what i get despite there houses being the same age, we were told it was the cable from the telegraph pole to our house but nobody will fix it so we pay for 1mbps broadband with talktalk
However now they want to force us onto an 8mbps package thats great seeing as I will never reach an 1/8 of the speed.
My isp Eclipse is great, told me exactly what speed i would get (4 meg), infact i get 5 meg so have no issues. My only is is with BT openreach - they need to get with it and spend some some money on upgrading the infrastructure.
Virgin may deliver close to advertised speeds but as soon as you start to use the connection the Virgin media traffic management system comes into play which cripples your speeds completely, Virgin do not clearly display this on any advertisements, Its like me saying I will give you 100mbit broadband and as soon as you use your superfast connection for more than 5 minutes I cap it at 2mbit
same thing is happening to me now i had 9mb speed yesterday as usual i checked it because the day before it was 1mb and it has messed up again today and is 2mb wtf ?
I agree, I also think that they should be clearer on their download limits. Companies often consider streaming as downloads so the limit could be used in a really short amount of time
i think virgin media is the most accurate in regards to connection speed advertising. i signed up for 20mb package...and i get 18.4mb at least...but their service sucks though...constantly disconnects
I get what I theoretically should based on the distance from the telephone exchange. I'm miles away from it, so I get max download speeds of 200kbs, which is shit. No chance of fibre optics because we don't have a cable box; if NTL were still around I'd kick their asses for missing us out.

Its weird,
I have a 50MB VM cable line, On your "Speedtester"
Which I found dreadful I achieved 14mb.
On an independant checker to a London Endpoint I recieved 48mb
and downloading a large file from a Newsgroup I found that I was getting between 48-56mb connection speeds.
Does your site/endpoint have sufficient bandwidth to support 50mb connections?!
Also, "UP TO" suggests what you "MIGHT" be able to get. The public however are too stupid to understand that however!
