@waverag as a kid he was self taught.. he started playing pro around 14 i think, with p-funk.  then went on to play with just about every great jazz/fusion/prog etc. group you can imagine. but im sure once he started playing out he picked up a few valuable things from other drummers. but yea.. hes the best in the world in my (and many others) opinion. my favorite is vinnie calaiuta tho.

Awesome solo. He tries to play the song back in SO many times. At first he's eyes closed. When he's about ready he starts looking over at Mc, who's grinning obliviously. He plays some super fills into a pause followed by a left hand crash, which is the note for the band to come in on. At the end he's practically begging Mc with his eyes to get it going again. My favorite attempt starts at 5:02 to 5:14, he just nailed it and the band wasted it.
