  • Volunteer or career firefighter, it makes no difference. His behavior ultimately effects the efficiency with which a "job" can be completed. If he gets injured he the becomes the priority. And, if he has to wait for someone to bring him PPE, which I doubt, then he must wait, surely he could/is carrying it with him.

  • like a boss

  • @Zeekstuff yeah i'm a volley in alabama and our chief usually gets there before our units do and makes initial observations and tells us what to do when we get there. i guess it's dif everywhere

  • cool guys dont look at explosions

  • get your ppe's!

  • FLASHIZZLE!!

  • Its amazing that the Chief was there before everyone else it must of been his own house

  • @Zeekstuff lol

  • @Zeekstuff the cheif always responds before the crew to the scence.

  • @usarmyboy8 hahaha what fire department have you riden with? mine the 20 officer doesn't get there till long after our initial plan of action and in larger cities the battalion cheifs usually are behind the first responding engines and just sit there..

  • @Zeekstuff im a volley in nj so i guess its different

  • At 0:18 is when he shit his pants.

  • Wow.

  • He should never have been in the hot zone without bunker gear. Back to basics!

  • @schutdawg this guy was actually a battalion chief for a paid department in Texas. I am a volunteer in the same area and he taught at the area schools and has never lived down this video. He's retired now but he wasn't a volunteer.

  • Now we know how he became bald...

  • This guy must be an officer(capt. or chief etc.)with a volunteer fire dept. Most times they will respond direct to the scene and do a size up before any trucks or equipment arrive on scene. Because they go direct they do not have they're PPE. It can be dangerous, but the job is inherently dangerous.

  • We watched this one in our level 1 training class we thought that guy was so stupid for not wearing his ppe.

  • he walks to see if the back is burning also ..... Baa hahaha

    "G" ya think ? LOL

  • I'm in academy, right now, and this is prime example on why you should ALWAYS don PROPER PPE....Salty Dogs often dispute this but call me a sissy any day...I'll keep my full PPE while on scene

  • @wwwtotalitaerde I love Germany!!

  • i think he was checking to see if its on fire firemen do that you know.

  • @kingbleah haha the smoke and flames didnt give it away, he might have been looking for someone

  • Cool guys don't look at explosions!

  • hes a pro didnt run from it it blew hes like nothing big

  • bong go bad

  • He should of checked that door for heat.

  • Wheres a volunteer when you need one?

  • No time to bunker up en route before doing a size up??

    No gear = no go.

This is a good bad example.

  • How did this guy NOT recognize that there was a huge risk of flashover?

  • Why is he parked in the driveway? Where does he plan on putting his ladder truck when it gets there?

  • I mean we don't know what the call was, Could have been toned out as partially involved with entrapment. Always have to do the full 360 of a house, But i agree he should have had his gear on

  • Okay.. we see smoke, and fire... we see signs of back draft.. why are we going near it? And better yet, why are we going near it without gear and an SCBA?? Common sense guys. We are taught in class.. PPE!!

  • Definite signs of a back-draft. No reason to go around back and look you can see it from the front. Hopefully that wasn't an officer, so you can blame it on lack of training, rather than stupidity. rule number one when arriving on scene. Before you do anything don your PPE! mans lucky not to look like something from the hills have eyes

  • You can see that its a back draft. Just looking at the front of the house tells you that. Look how dark those windows are. They are covered. High particle concentration. The way i am seeing it is the fire was contained in the rear then broke out into the front. He is lucky he was standing there. Honestly he shouldnt have even went that close. Should have stayed back and waited. Thats kinda the same as how they like to walk up to Anhydrous ammonia ....

  • Thanks for the science lesson BeefHive did you just learn that?

  • its called fire,,, now you need to get the wet stuff on the red stuff...

  • enough said

  • I dont get why every1 plussed him. Was there an argument i missed. Ive always been told its not just put the wet stuff on the red stuff. U gota do ventalation, u gota get propared for the RIT team to go in, u gota understand the blueprints (if structor fire) to know all your exits. Theres definetly way more then put the wet stuff on the red stuff.

  • @93CFD id rather drag my knuckles around and break shit....lol

  • lol

  • @93CFD correction, we need to put the wet stuff ont he BASE of the red stuff. you can spray into flames all day and not do shit.

  • it did look like a backdraft

  • Just read the smoke...

  • yea im almost 100% this is a backdraft

  • i watched this over and over and over....i wanna say it was a backdraft looks to me like a window was broke in the rear, look on the upper right of the video now this is only my opp...and as far as him not having gear...no excuse there, put gear on then go so when other companies arrive there not having to rescue the origional victim plus a firefighter

  • Comment removed

  • how does back draft like that happen??? just wondering

  • when there's oxygen depletion in a burning building the fire and smoke kinda seaches out for more oxygen. once it finds it, its superheated gases (smoke) ignites. Like if a building looks like its "breathing" smoke out and back in, backdraft could be about to occur

  • Its not like the movies it does not go in and out. It happens when a High dose of Air is introduced to a enclosed space that is filled with CO. The air raises the temperature to about 1200 degrees and super ignights the room simular to a flashover except that its the CO burning not the contents. The contents have already burned away to make the CO.

  • im gunna say this was a flashover casue it wasnt technically a smoke explosion....unless somone correct me as to why its a backdraft

  • i think your right. it would make more sense to be a flashover. unless somthing happened on the other side, like a windoe was broken or somthing

  • Safety first. Not a bright move there. Paid or volunteer has nothing to do with it. Nobody's perfect.

  • didnt really looks like a close call lol

  • And the dude that works with a guy with 35 years on....Truck3 or somthing? Your 35 year vet will get you killed if he teaches you stuff like this....heed the warning young fella. Be safe and do it right!!! Or don't do it at all!!!

  • Again the man in the video is a batallion chief you micro managing stupid fuck. What department are you with?? Its fucks like you that make other fireman sick

  • All of your comments are duely noted Volleys! But TRUELY not listened to!!

  • I'm glad I got all the responses I got from my original post. All that tells me is all of you vollies think this MORON was acting in total control of the situation. Yet no one can tell me what he would've done had there been a need for a quick rescue in the rear of the house. Or if that wall would have totally exploded in his face. You guys crack me up!!! If you've truely taken the same classes I have, you would know he needed gear on to go around that house! End of discussion.

  • No gear......no go!

  • @pcjoel999 u say no gear no go.... ummm dude u should be saying holy shit! That guy if cuking brave! im too much of a pussy to do something like that! dont critisize that courageous deeds of others if ur only gonna put em down

  • @duffymcduff9128 The reason why he is saying No gear no go is because like myself he has gone through the intensive basic and level 1 firefighter training. It is something that is drilled into your mentality from the begining that if you don't have proper protective equipment, you don't go.

  • @duffymcduff9128 Buddy, he should have never been in the hot zone without gear. Period! An educated guess would be that he was doing a 360 degree scene size-up. That's when firefighters circle the structure to get a look at the entire scene and identify any dangers or other things that are of importance. A size-up is a vital part of an incident response if it is done properly and part of doing it properly is to be wearing your gear correctly.

  • @duffymcduff9128 Also, he wasn't putting him down. There is a good reason why videos like this are taken and viewed by other firefighters, especially academy classes: to learn from their mistakes. It's like a football team watching the replays and critiquing their performance. That makes better football players the same way this makes better firefighters.

  • @pcjoel999 hah i would say def a must, but that still a pretty good officer doing a 360 on arrival. people get excited and forget the little stuff and it ends up with someone dead or bailing out of a 3 story window (obviously not in this case...lol)

  • notice the light smoke pushing/puffing out? decent sign of a flashover

  • *you mean backdraft*

  • jmandacina... you can be an all time fireman, but the volunteer work makes you look way more professional citizen

    -Brandon

    District.3 Okanogan County, Omak, Wa.

    Vonteer Departmen

  • This guy is lucky as hell, best way to put it.

  • ok

jmandacina im a volunteer firefighter paid or not we all do the same job it doesnt matter if your you volunteer or are paid we are all there to do the same job i dont need to get paid to do something i love and that is helping people out i totally agree with ryan125g and people make mistakes we are only human were not superman

  • Yeah, this guy knew what he was doing.

I've had that same type of "pop-up" explosion happen in my fireplace when the paper that's starts it all doesn't light right away.

There'll be lots of smoke without any flame and then WHOOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

suddenly the entire piece of paper is gone in 3-5 seconds.

  • Garuntee that was a friggin Volley!!! What a moron!!! What was he gonna do if there was somone back there that needed rescue? Maybe he was going to put on his superman cape and go in.....in any rate....get a job vollies!!! Learn how to do it right or PLEASE don't do it at all!!!

  • what the fuck is wrong with volleys??? we do the exact same job as u do,, but we dont get paid, nd we dont need to get paid to do the job we love, nd most of us do the job rite, just some guys like this, ur a fuckin asshole who needs money to save lifes, go fuck yourself

  • how many people have YOU saved superman?

Im a volunteer, I have a guy in my department with 35 years in and been a volunteer his whole life. But since he is a volunteer, I guess you know more than him, right? Since you get paid to do your job, you MUST know better. Too bad that we both take the same classes to become FFs, doesnt that just piss you off?

    asshole

  • So im a volley/Paid firefighter for nyfd theres one good key to be a firefighter and that is dont be judge mental u never know nor will evr know if he was or wasnt a volley but he was doing his job and that is all that should matter he was riskking his life for someone else for free........

  • What department are you with?

  • For what department??

  • Comment removed

  • Not a volley. Battalion chief Wichita Falls Fire Department. He knows what he is doing. Very well respected department. Maybe you need to quit acting like a new age pussy firefighter or what ever you are and learn from the old guys. Believe me you aint shit till you have been in there shoes.

  • i think that was alittle to explosive to be a flashover.

  • Flashover and Backdraft are two separate phenomena.

  • Kid, you should just stay at school, and get better grades in English. Do you know what a period is?

You have a long way to go before you decide what you want to be...

  • im a volinteer jouner with my deoertment i havnt seen alot yet iv been to a few calls i enjoy it but safty number one and i heard of guys checking the building like what was just shown and that is un safe because if he had his turnout gear and it hit him he would be better off than with out but any firefighter would do what he did great job i would ever just do a lap like that to check ever without gear i would stay further back though cuase that thing was going

  • ...

  • my thoughts exactly

  • room flashed over from the looks of it

  • I'm not even a firefighter and i can tell its not a backdraft. I start school in august though, cant wait! I wanna work in chicago

  • looks to me like a propane gas tank exploding...the blast looked to hard for a backdraft or flashover...looked like the explosion happened at the back ,and went through the house to the front porch.

  • dummy

  • it's a flashover the smoke is to dark and it's not puffing in and out of the structure. and a back draft is caused by the fire eating up all the oxygen inside a contained room or building and when oxygen is introduced, to the room, an explosion of fire occurs.

  • can you explain a flashover to me in leymans terms pls?

  • Flashover is when a room is superheated so the thermal layers in the room from floor to ceiling are enough to make the room combust completely and instantly. Backdraft is when combustion uses all the available oxygen in a room that is sufficiently sealed to prevent the fire from pulling in enough oxygen to sustain combustion. The fire will go out but the room remains heated to the point that the introduction of oxygen will cause instant combustion. Usually violently. Common in auto fires too

  • thanks mate.

  • flashover is when after they put it out and its not out enough and they move on to water other areas and that part they thought was out well flash's over with flames thus can be devastating if big enough.

  • a flashover is when all of the contents in the building reach their burning temperature and combust at the same time

  • Anyone who says this is a backdraft is a complete retard.

  • completely 100 percent agreed!!

  • i would just leave it at that is one pissed off fire flexing its muscles

  • its a flashover. see the smoke pushing out under pressure just before it flashed. Not a backdraft, it had already vented in the back. not a gas explosion, again see the smoke conditions.just a simple everyday textbook flashover.

  • doing your 360 without gear ? interesting... glad im not an officer. lol

  • not a back draft...too much smoke ventilating and not in the right pattern for a back draft correct? black windows indicate though

I'd say small bleve or flashover

  • definitely not a flashover

  • does the xxx mean it was a porn shop. that would exsplain him running in to save it.

  • This is a great video of the typical flashover. If you are a firefighter and don't recognize any of the obvious warning signs in this video, then please, go back to the two most important lessons in firefighting 101- fire behavior and building construction. Recognizing this killer before you and your crew commit to an interior attack without coordinated ventilation will save your lives.

  • Well said!

  • very much so TEN ZERO

  • Must have been a damn small tank if it was a bleve. And yes, propane certainly can bleve. Just about any gas under pressure reverts to a liquid form due to the vapour particles being so closely compacted under said pressure.

And no, cooking liquid does not bleve.

The explosive potential of the flamable gas wanting to revert back to its gaseous state causes the massive explosion.

I dre say this video is simply a flashover.

  • just to clear everyone up propane is a liquid inside the tank and can BLEVE. also there was no propane tank here because it would have leveled a good part of the house. what happend was the house flashed over. a flashover is when the atmosphere gets to the right temperature for the thermal gases to ignite, they all ignite at once and causes what looks like an explosion, but is really the stage between growth and a fully involved fire.

  • need some new shorts???

  • check out the fire coming from the roof and the bright orange glow behind the house. no signs of backdraft here. propane tank bleve. the guy running to check it out isnt a firefighter. he's local police. video is from the cruisers dash cam

  • not a bleve. its propane. it would be a bleve if it was heating oil or a liquid that caused the explosion

  • I can't say for sure what it is.... but a propane tank can most definitly bleve. The chances are rare because of the pressure relief valve but i've seen one fail in a fire before. either way...not a backdraft.

  • propane is in liquid form when it is in a cylinder. It becomes a gas when it is released. Do a little research on propane. I just mentioned bleve on this vid because its obviously not a backdraft. But either way the point im going for now is that Propane...under the right conditions can BLEVE.

  • haha don't be stupid. propane is a liquid. The tank keeps it a liquid until it is released as a gas. YA a propane tank can definitely bleve

  • Comment removed

  • YA WHAT HE SAID

  • haha....i'm gonna guess thats an agreement

  • Comment removed

  • I can tell at 11 seconds in that that house is headed for a backdraft.

The windows are solid black all the way down. Classic backdraft signs.

  • Run Forrest! RUN!!

  • Just readin all the bullshit posted here and wanted to say that fire conditions change and as fireFIGHTETRS, we change with the conditions. RIGHT! Anyone disagree with that? The fire service is changing (women and minorities being hired) and we as fireFIGHTERS need to change with the conditions. I'm volunteer and have applied lots of places only to have minorities and women be hired before me! There aint nothin wrong with that! They have just as much right to be a fireFIGHTER as you do!

  • The first condition a good firefighter probably needs is comunication, oral and written, so maybe you should volunteer for an english class first, YOUU FOOTURE BEFFALLO JAKE!

  • The reason i put fighter in firefighter in all caps was to make shit of LFDTOOL02. In his comments he was putting MAN in fireman in all caps. You got something against volunteers?

  • Great video, thanks.

I'm no longer a firefighter / fireman, having been invalided out, but I speak for a lot of my ex-colleagues when I say that the only thing that matters a damn is whether the person you're with can do the job - because your life is probably in their hands. Man / Woman, doesn't matter, as long as the job gets done. Neither the "Women are better firefighters" or the "firefighting's a MAN's job" types really add much valuable to the discussion.

    Stay Safe

  • notta damn thing wrong with female firefighters we have 2 on our station and they do a hell of a job..so fuck you man..firefighting is a unisex career or volunteer business..so fuck you

  • HAHHAHAHAHA..We just fired a female last week..Why? Cuz she ran out of a fire. Go figure

  • If a woman can pick up a 230 lb firefighter, plus his gear, and carry him out of a fire if he goes down, then welcome aboard.....if not let the men handle the job and find something new to do...

  • My Squad has five Women. One who works primary Emergency Medical, one whose Safety and primary Emergency Medical. One whose primary Safety on our Ladder Truck, and one of the units trusted to see it gets set up right. All five can easily pack a fully loaded guy, but man you're full of shit. There are more jobs on a scene than Just entry.

  • "f a woman can pick up a 230 lb firefighter"

You don't need to pick them up. In fact if you stand in the fire you may instanly die. She only needs to drag him below the smoke. That is if she enter the building. Women can be engineers and run pumps as well as pull line. When it comes to hook and ladders, all most all women can't hack it. Never saw one that could. She would need to be a monster to have that kind of strength..

  • How about were all proud to be in the Fire service!

  • the last thing i want to say is you guys have no right to attack my character and tell me who the fuck i am because you have no idea what ive gone through in my life. im not trying to bitch im just saying people need to have some respect for each other because we are all in this together. enough of the "im better because im a man" its down right ridiculous. im through here.
  • thats awesome how you all are crying about something that was said so long ago. dont bruise your ego or anything.

  • (FYI, I was talking about the female who was complaining about being called 'firemen', not everyone else.)

  • lucky

  • looks more like a bleve of a gas grill on the back patio

  • it flashed

  • Our safety officers are the worst offenders.paid or volly, kind of ironic.

I personally think it looks like it flashed, since it had already self vented(orange glow at back)what did the DAD have to say about it?? and lastly, I don't care if its 2008 or 1908, I am a FIREMAN. the cunts who wanted to do this job are the ones who wanted to change it.Typically the broads USUALLY get absorbed or hidden to ride out their careers, when they realize the truth that its a MAN's job

  • I understand your feeling about women in the fire service but when you use the C bomb it lessens the respect we have when citizens read your comment. Your better than that.

    Retired FF

  • did that flashover at the end?

  • yes

  • i bet he had a turd in his pants when it did that

  • Thats Blackdraft not Flashover. Watch the puffing smoke of different colors, and intense explosion when the house is given the O2 it needs.

  • dude go back to rookie school this was in no way a backdraft!

  • he aint not fdny squad boss he is jsut some 16 wacker sitten at home just finish basics of firefighting and knows big words

  • NOTE- The following is "dumbed down" so ekellyek has a chance of understanding it-

Yes me no big words. Its a wonder you can even sound them out, cause you sure aint no good at reading comprehension. Me no FDNY squad boss. Me boss on FDNY type squad. Cuz fire departments lack standard terminology, Me uze FDNY type squad 4 reference.

  • what the hell is this fdny doucher even sayen?

  • oh man, very lucky. i can see if he was in a hurry but he could of at least put his turnout gear on before. i dont mean full out scba but at least his trousers, coat, helmet and boots

  • First, I guess you didnt get my attempt at levity.

Second, batallion, personell& the myriad of grammatical errors in your previous post; perhaps one should not throw stones.

Lastly, I make excuses for nothing.

  • are you in the fire service or any type of emergency services?

  • I'm a career boss on a "FDNY type" squad.

  • He was a cop. First one on scene. Checking for victims in the rear. Any one would do the same. Stop pontificating.

  • Doesn't look like a cop? No duty belt, badge, gun, etc? Most likely battalion chief/captain but I could be wrong. Close call though!

  • first, LOOK AT THE TITLE "FIREFIGHTER close call.." not "COP close call"! second LOOK AT COMMENTS that CONFIRM he was a batallion chief by the PERSON who POSTED the video. nice guess tho. and lastly refer to my previous comment...personal safety is PRIORITY NUMBER ONE for any type of emergency personell.

  • Forgive me if I don't take safety advise from a drunk Irishman.

  • don't make excuses because of your stupidity which is obvious in your spelling 'advice'

  • it looks to me this firefighter was an officer. he should know better, and its ashame people like him only add to the statistics of injuried and killed firefighters. in my humble opinion he should be stripped of his rank and given remeadial training before he goes out on another fire.

  • fireman is a lifelong term..and yes there are alot of great women in the fire service..but some girls should be let nowheres near the fireground ..the women i know in the fire service i know for sure arent gonna carry me out if shit goes bad inside a structure..just live with the term firemn siriously..its not htat big of a deal peoplefiremen firefighter who gives a shit..you do your job cuz u like it not what its called

  • Hah I dont like to say it boys but NFPA anyone? At times the NFPA can be a bunch of fucks with some certain guidelines but PPE man im telling ya,That cheif is a lucky man i must say, as everyone else stated he could have been doing just a quick size up of the structure before throwing on turnout. Either way he learned to be a bit more careful next time. CFD all the way!

  • Dumbshit

  • Please Fucking enlighten us on what women do better in the FIRE service then us FIREMEN. we dont need ya to cook. we can cook for ourselves, we can wash our own clothes. we can wash our own rigs,

    Proud to be a FIREMAN

  • look pendejo why the fuk do u have to be so sexiest about it u dumbass its somethin called equal rights n they can do as much as we do

  • We have a female firefighter at our station and she does a great job! I work for a pretty busy department is southern california. She went up against a lot of guys to get her job and took 3rd in her fire academy. She is ok in my book. LA County Fire Station #20 mixed nuts crew

  • You tell em bush1woo. And to onevandaler...FIGHTING FIRES IS A MANS JOB AND WILL ALWAYS BE A MANS JOB SO GET OVER IT!

  • okay this is 2008 and we need to STOP saying FIREMEN because it is no longer just a mans job.

is a delivering the mail only a mans job?

    that just pisses me off.

and bashing the BC in the video is pretty fucked up

  • I think you need to be cockslapped!!! No one cares about your feelings. It's called freedom of speech and i call it whatever the fuck i want to call it. So shut up bitch, SWALLOW!!! FireMEN for life!

  • Why don't you just use the term 'firefighter' ?

  • You know, it's females like you in the fire service that give all of the females a bad name. If you really wanted to just do the job, you wouldn't waste your time complaining about simple wording like that. It's always going to be a boys club, get over it. Just do your job and don't complain about the little things. That will get you more respect then being a self-righteous 'yay I'm awesome because I'm a female firefighter' anyways.

    Stay safe everyone.

  • i am so sick of feminists

  • We have a female firefighter at our station and she does a great job! I work for a pretty busy department is southern california. She went up against a lot of guys to get her job and took 3rd in her fire academy. She is ok in my book. LA County Fire Station #20 mixed nuts crew
