Your graphics card doesn't do justice to the game. It was designed to run best with a 3dFX card with "Glide" graphics, but they're defunct.

I loved this game, a big sweep of space, you fully explored that 3-D space with your jetpack. As you hit the jets the ground would dip below you, made me feel...peaceful...until a few milliseconds later when I was fragged...hehehe.

this is the original Starsiege: Tribes, running in SOFTWARE mode (yeah, when's the last time you saw a game with 3D rendering turned off?) Sometimes this was done so people could play it at work on crap graphics. Also, there was some issues capping video with 3D acceleration. Keep in mind this game came out over 10 years ago.

Tribes 1 and 2 are AWESOME! This guy's video card and/or settings are the worst I've ever seen! I played Tribes versions for 7 years and never saw screens this bad. He just needed to upgrade his video card to something made this century.

IMNTBHO Tribes 1 and 2 are the best FPS games ever made. The third dimension flight provides makes a huge difference and you don't get that in any other FPS. Get it! Play it! You'll be glad you did!

Tribes was developed long before Halo, it was here before any of the significant first person shooters were released. The inability to understand this was a classic when it was made - along with being unable to be open to new or old things saddens me.

Yes this is definitely software mode. The game was released back in 1998, when 3D accelerators were not that common. To keep from locking out people who didn't have an expensive new Voodoo2, Voodoo3, or Nvidia TNT board, the coders put a software rendering mode option in. It has very nice 3d hardware rendering in OpenGL or Glide, and looks much better. There's a screenshot at Wikipedia with hardware rendering.
