This song kicks ass. Carlene Carter was all over Al. Bit of an awkward moment at 6:45 where she rebukes Joey. "I didn't finish your song, but I did finish Al's.." Ouch.
I worked at a music club (328 Performance Hall) in Nashville TN for 10 years and easily the three best live bands I saw were the Neville Brothers (circa '85), Los Lobos and NRBQ!
Old times at the Joyous Lake when they completely took the place down is all I remember. They are pretty goddamn good and I believe that was like '83 or so. Whatta blast
What about their brief period with an awesome horn section.. remember NRBQ and the Whole Wheat Horns? Wow.. takes me back to drunken nights in bars and music fests in Western Mass and Connecticut. Most rockin bar band ever!
The late, lamented Jerry Wexler said that the way to recognize a musical genius is the distance between that artist and whoever is number two. When NRBQ plays, you can't even see number two with a telescope. They rock so hard you wonder what keeps the building intact. Every time I went to see them play (and it was many, many times), my face would be sore for days afterward because I had been grinning so hard all night. Thanks for posting this.
How did he know it was a Squier ? I don't know if they were even made back then..good eyesite! I think Al could afford to use a real strat, it's got the small headstock..anyway ,cool vid and Carlene ain't bad either..
Wow. I thought that the big guy looked like Al Anderson, having seen him play in Western Mass back in 67 (I believe) with the Wildweeds ("No Good To Cry"). Lo and behold, it's big Al!
Was Captain Lou Albano really their manager? Where else do they come from besides Al from Windsor(near Hartford...WDRC days)?
Nah jhill, just brain dead from the crap spewed out of them shit-fi i-pods today. Good REAL music like the 'Q produced should be a required college subject.
Sounds like Kimsanleanne likes her music polished, cleaned up, manufactured. That's not music, it's technology. NRBQ plays from the heart. Their love of music is evident in everything they play. From the tone of your posts, not surprised you don't get it.
@Cooleemee43 thanks for that clarification, but I can't hear what he's playing until about half way through. Nice honkey tonk style. You have to admit, he sure looks funny the way he slaps the keys...
@powderchowder2 He is indeed and his name is Terry Adams. Its amazing how much he adds to all their music and how hard it is to actually spot his contributions at times. He is a genius on the keyboards and an inovator with the Clav much of the time he blends his Clav/keys with the guitar of Big Al to the point where you can't tell where the guitar ends and Terry picks up. I have studied his playing and he a one of a kind master musician.
If that's not a rock n' roll solo I don't know what is. On a cheap Squier Strat no less, by a guy who's only played Teles and Gibsons before or since; Young and the Restless drumsticks; Blue Rondo a la Turk or...Chopsticks. And irony of ironies: Al is now and has been for years one of hottest songwriters in Nashville. This was America's greatest band. If you know, you know. If you don't... find out.
@mccaslin131 - I agree. Al is a fantastic musician; grew up with him in Windsor--Wildweeds days. Also wish he'd continued to do some Brit-style and R&B stuff as well, since he does that amazing well too. Nonetheless, just can't take it away from him or this band.
Thank you Dragonfoe. I love Jazz. I even love Thelonius Monk... somehow that particular solo did not cut it for me. Didn't seem to come from any place IMO. I appreciate your kind way of explaining things though.
Sadly, NRBQ are pretty much done. Al left at the end of '93 to write songs in Nashville. Joey's brother Johnny replaced him. Their last album was released in 2004 and soon afterward stopped playing live or recording. I don't know the whole story about why that is. They've since played a couple of reunion shows in western MA but other than that are pretty much kaput. As you may have guessed, I'm a huge fan and miss seeing them.
I suspect the breakup had to do with some bad stuff between Johnny Spampinato and Terry Adams. I followed them right up till near the end and saw a couple of obvious scenes between the two on and offstage during the last year or so.
Everytime NRBQ played, Tom Ardolino's then girlfriend used to scream out "Get Rhythm"....here's one for you Tom..

As much as I like Terry Adams and his attempt to keep "NRBQ" going with the new band, this is the real stuff. Any other lineup is a cover band.
