I really hate these ignorant people who believe our world wouldn't be any different if one species died out. Our lives could change tremendously, especially with dolphins, if an entire species went extinct. The ecosystem would change. There would be a whole lot more fish, and more diseases. Plus, dolphins are very friendly to humans. They have been known to save lives. It's selfish to wish extinction upon an entire species. Especially since we're the ones that are damaging our planet.

Whale Wars did not hit a real emotional nerve, I watched it as it was good TV, and I supported their views. First of all, dolphins are highly intelligent mammals. To compare them to pork or cattle is just ignorant. Think of your pets (cats, dogs, horses) and ask yourself if you could BRUTALLY SLAUGHTER these beloved creatures on a massive scale? I doubt you could. Secondly, these dolphins don't belong to Japan, or any other country for that matter. Their migratory route happens to pass through the coast of the Philippine Sea. Taiji is the largest dolphin hunt/slaughter,and its easier to film in taiji, his main goal is to get the word out that the meat is contaminated. once its out, there will be a warning label, people might not tend to buy reading the warnings. its all about supply and demand..

I'll try and think of areas to access conversations with the young ones. I agree they would be the greatest motivating factor for the Japanese people. It's something to be careful with though, they can also easily feel alienated, especially when coming from a foreigner. Still, it's worth a shot. I wish I had the money to make a few thousand copies of the show to send to Japan, that would work wonders I think.
What's the difference between slaughtering dolphins for food and slaughtering cows and pigs for food?
While I do think they could and SHOULD be more humane in their practices, America needs to stop shoving its culture down everyone's throat. I mean really, how would we respond to Hindus, who believe cows are sacred, if they started doing all these Mickey Mouse antics at slaughterhouses?
@shadypelican There actually is a HUGE difference. Cows and pigs are bred SPECIFICALLY for food. Meaning the process is sustainable because they are always breeding enough cows and pigs to kill and breed more cows and pigs and so on.
@shadypelican Dolphins that are slaughtered are driven from the wild and their ENTIRE POD is massacred, that includes females, babies, pregnant dolphins... and absolutely no effort is made to sustain the population, they just keep taking and taking from the wild depleting the dolphin population.

I fully agree with you on the issues of the mercury and cruelty. As far as sustainability goes, it is my understanding that only a few thousand dolphins are killed and they are no where close to being endangered.

However the majority of the people in Japan didn't even know this was going on. There was absolutely no media coverage on this before The Cove. If the very few people in Japan even knew about this, how can it be considered Japanese culture?

The way I see it, if the pro dolphin movement wants to succeed it shouldn't focus its efforts on trying to convince Americans, but instead on convincing Japanese, and I don't know if the methods currently being used are really designed for that...otherwise I would think the health issues around it would be greater emphasized...
@shadypelican You should watch The Cove, it actually has many different arguments against the dolphin hunt that I think you'd respect. It goes beyond the cruelty into the mercury, "whale meat" labeling, captivity, sustainablity etc..
@shadypelican There are only a few fishermen involved who capitalize on the show dolphins that they sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars per dolphin. The dolphins that they slaughter are not that valuable misleadingly sold not as "Dolphin meat" but "Whale Meat" because whale meat is worth more that dolphin and seeing as the people of Japan don't think dolphins are food why would they buy "Dolphin Meat" thats like Americans buying "Puppy dog meat".
@shadypelican The reason I say this is completely unsustainable is because the whole idea of a dolphin "drive" is to take an entire pod of dolphins (since dolphins travel together in pods) and remove them from the wild by death or by captivity. Remember, these are simply dolphins that travel along their yearly migratory routes past Japan. It isn't an endless supply of dolphins and eventually if they keep killing entire pods, eventually none will return.
@shadypelican Of course, these dolphin drives in Japan will not cause the entire species to go extinct, however the dolphins that travel past Japan will slowly disappear, therefore affecting the aquatic biosphere around Japan. Agreed. Dolphins, whales and most other species (some more obvious than others) are not mere organic machines with primitive instincts. They have feelings and motivations, just like us. You only have to spend time around them a little while to feel and see this. Clones on the other hand ARE only organic machines, there's nothing inside per say.

@osprey02 yes, but certain animals were not made to eat... dolphins are extremely toxic and the meat is worthless..like many sea animals...so in this case, its cruelty and NOT necessary....big difference to what died for me to eat (chicken, cow, deer etc.)

@ayajasminx Actually, they don't need to kill the dolphins. The only reason for capturing them is the fact that they get tons of money for the few ones that are sold to aquariums and such. And the whole thing about killing them for food. Their meat is filled with mercury because of all the pollutants in the oceans. Meaning, we can't eat them. @ayajasminx In Japan, It's actually considered quite trashy to eat dolphin. They took a poll in the larger cities of Japan, and many could not believe that people would actually eat dolphin. In Taiji and maybe other places, they mislabel dolphin on the market so people will buy it. Have you seen The Cove? It explains it all in the documentary.

The difference between Dolphins/Whales and Cows+Pigs is that Dolphins were never domesticated to breed for food. I'll bet you anything the people that commented are all sorts of religion or race. Basically, they'll all have different thoughts on Japan. I've seen people commenting smack and defending the cove, and people saying 'hell yah dolphin meat'. So going on to youtube and expecting racist comments towards your country on a dolphin massacre in japan is pretty likely.

I really hate these ignorant people who believe our world wouldn't be any different if one species died out. Our lives could change tremendously, especially with dolphins, if an entire species went extinct. The ecosystem would change. There would be a whole lot more fish, and more diseases. Plus, dolphins are very friendly to humans. They have been known to save lives. It's selfish to wish extinction upon an entire species. Especially since we're the ones that are damaging our planet.

@killerofwildlife wow kid you really are ignorant. yes all marine life has mercury but the amount in small fish vs dolphins is greatly increased in dolphin meat by multiple ppm (parts per million) and yes if you look at fda reports this will be confirmed you are just showing how completely lost with humanity you are. the facts remain that if you eat sea bass you will get sum mercury but not anywhere near as much as in a larger cetacean such as a dolphin.FACTS not opinions.INHUMANE...?

Also they may be just not slatering as much because THEY KNOW that Ric was there and don't want the bad press. What needs to be done is to create a backbone for the IWC to fine and enforce sea animal protections. The IWC also needs to have it's own LEGITIMENT research group for whale population/marine life.

I'd not heard of this and The Cove before I saw the trailers at the end of the whale wars finale last week. Whale Wars did not hit a real emotional nerve, I watched it as it was good TV, and I supported their views. When I watched the first episode of Blood dolphins, and then The Cove, it quite upset me towards the end due to the pure brutal cruelty.

First of all, dolphins are highly intelligent mammals. To compare them to pork or cattle is just ignorant. Think of your pets (cats, dogs, horses) and ask yourself if you could BRUTALLY SLAUGHTER these beloved creatures on a massive scale? I doubt you could. Secondly, these dolphins don't belong to Japan, or any other country for that matter. Their migratory route happens to pass through the coast of the Philippine Sea. What the Japanese are doing is cruel and highly immoral.

Taiji is the largest dolphin hunt/slaughter,and its easier to film in taiji, his main goal is to get the word out that the meat is contaminated. once its out, there will be a warning label, people might not tend to buy reading the warnings. its all about supply and demand..

I'll try and think of areas to access conversations with the young ones. I agree they would be the greatest motivating factor for the Japanese people. It's something to be careful with though, they can also easily feel alienated, especially when coming from a foreigner. Still, it's worth a shot. I wish I had the money to make a few thousand copies of the show to send to Japan, that would work wonders I think.

However the majority of the people in Japan didn't even know this was going on. There was absolutely no media coverage on this before The Cove. The way I see it, if the pro dolphin movement wants to succeed it shouldn't focus its efforts on trying to convince Americans, but instead on convincing Japanese, and I don't know if the methods currently being used are really designed for that...otherwise I would think the health issues around it would be greater emphasized...

@shadypelican There are only a few fishermen involved who capitalize on the show dolphins that they sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars per dolphin. The dolphins that they slaughter are not that valuable misleadingly sold not as "Dolphin meat" but "Whale Meat" because whale meat is worth more that dolphin and seeing as the people of Japan don't think dolphins are food why would they buy "Dolphin Meat" thats like Americans buying "Puppy dog meat".

@shadypelican The reason I say this is completely unsustainable is because the whole idea of a dolphin "drive" is to take an entire pod of dolphins (since dolphins travel together in pods) and remove them from the wild by death or by captivity. Remember, these are simply dolphins that travel along their yearly migratory routes past Japan. It isn't an endless supply of dolphins and eventually if they keep killing entire pods, eventually none will return.

@shadypelican Of course, these dolphin drives in Japan will not cause the entire species to go extinct, however the dolphins that travel past Japan will slowly disappear, therefore affecting the aquatic biosphere around Japan. To me, a few thousand dolphins a year is A LOT especially since they are only taking them from one specific migratory route

i don't personaly don't like the dolphin killing but it is their culture not ours, usa, just think every time we eat a hamburger how many cattle have died in this country. where do you draw the line what is ok to kill and what is not. as long as they use the dolphin for food and and it is not sensless killing what do you do. as long as they are not endangered, let them be, japanese are not protesting the killing of chickens and cattle here. think about it..

Agreed. Dolphins, whales and most other species (some more obvious than others) are not mere organic machines with primitive instincts. They have feelings and motivations, just like us. You only have to spend time around them a little while to feel and see this. Clones on the other hand ARE only organic machines, there's nothing inside per say.

@osprey02 yes, but certain animals were not made to eat... dolphins are extremely toxic and the meat is worthless..like many sea animals...so in this case, its cruelty and NOT necessary....big difference to what died for me to eat (chicken, cow, deer etc.)

I'll tel you one thing, I live in Novigrad, a small town on the noth-east cost of the adriatic sea, my father is a fisherman and every day he thows his nets in the water the dolphins come in big herd and they eat all the fish in the nets. they damage not only eating that fish but also because they make huge holes in the nets that must be replaced by new nets-the country says they are on the way of extinction and we cant do anything to stop that

Um wow this is stupid. I'm japanese and this is so offensive. It's not like ALL japanese people kill and eat dolphins/whales? What makes them any different than all the animals that we kill and eat? Like seriously. Maybe, there's a country that we don't know about that's against eating cows, or pigs. Pork is sacred in many religious countries. Imagine how they feel about America? Come on guys. @ayajasminx Actually, they don't need to kill the dolphins. The only reason for capturing them is the fact that they get tons of money for the few ones that are sold to aquariums and such. And the whole thing about killing them for food. Their meat is filled with mercury because of all the pollutants in the oceans. Meaning, we can't eat them. So yeah haha (sorry I went on a little rant there)

@ayajasminx In Japan, It's actually considered quite trashy to eat dolphin. They took a poll in the larger cities of Japan, and many could not believe that people would actually eat dolphin. In Taiji and maybe other places, they mislabel dolphin on the market so people will buy it. Have you seen The Cove? It explains it all in the documentary.

People just need to get the information out there. The reason why Japanese don't know about this is because the government filters what they see. It's not the people of Japan's fault that this is happening.

The difference between Dolphins/Whales and Cows+Pigs is that Dolphins were never domesticated to breed for food. I'll bet you anything the people that commented are all sorts of religion or race. Basically, they'll all have different thoughts on Japan. I've seen people commenting smack and defending the cove, and people saying 'hell yah dolphin meat'. So going on to youtube and expecting racist comments towards your country on a dolphin massacre in japan is pretty likely.
