  • This shud be compulsory viewing for ALL Bankers, Politicians and Local Government executives...Then they MIGHT just get the message that not all of us get bonuses for doing the job that we were hired to do...even if we do it badly..!! and run the country into an economic disaster..I got made redundant..soon to be probably homeless. where is my bonus...? I must have been at the empty trough. Love SOH for not forgetting the real world and putting it about.

  • damn`it. just bought a new car because they put an advert (which I could not skip) on at the start of this (rather awesome vdeo).

    Double damn that finance!!

  • Fantastic.

  • 8 people have to a lot of arrogrance, ignorance and greed

  • Steve Knightley wrote a brilliant song about vile politicians during the JOhn Major years, 'Cutthroats Crooks and Con men'. Brialliant song, check it out. sadly, Show of Hands had to keep singing it during the Blair/Brown years 'Is there anything left in England (or anywhere?) Anywhere left in Enmgland (or anyone?) Anyone left in England that's not for sale? Its going going going too late when it's gone. See you doen the road, Steve, Phil + Miranda
  • If there's only one good thing we're able to pull out of the recession... it's this song! :) Thanks for posting the vid. :)

  • Amen.. Well said in the song..

  • This is the sort of message music should be spreading, not the shite that current songs spread "the more drunk you get the more fun life become".

  • steve looks like a pirate

  • Yay! Miranda Sykes is with them (the Redhead on the double bass!) She adds so much, saw them at Greenbelt last weekend, they were fantastic! :D

  • A perfect example of how to incisively nail worldwide sentiment with humour. Fantastic...

  • Has Cameron and his cronies with all their millions ever had to scratch around for the money to eat? How they ever got in after Thatcher mystifies me.

    Greedy bastards.

  • @TXGTR

agree mate ive got 4 kids and a wife,we really struggle, our business is good as bust ,were it not for the trussel trust food bank we would be buggered.

we need change ,we need a true socialist government to help us strugling survivors, history will be harsh on these times,.

The ritch think there is a system to help folk like me ,but in truth there is sod all,it took me over 18months to sort my housing benefit,it should have taken days, the councill are lying cheeting bastards.

  • @jackssheduk A National Socialist government, yes.

Not a socialist government like the shite from Labour and Liberal Democrats.

Any English person who votes for Labour or lib dems has a bloody screw loose, if you think they give a shit about you, then you're wrong. Even the tories don't care about the majority, the English, or what the general public think? They know 80% + want an EU referendum but Cameron won't give it because he knows we want OUT of the EU. Democracy? WHERE?

  • As an observer, after reading some of the comments, I get the feeling there is great unrest with the climate of things as they are at this time, so is it any wonder there are riots as there have been lately. Most of the public call these rioters scum, but are they the ones that are suffering most? With the government tightening the screw down on the working class, cutting benefits by suggesting people are pulling a stroke when they genuinely need help just to claw back money to give billons away

  • Hilly likes it!

  • lets see them hands boys

  • six people are snakes

  • Idiots still vote for the pigs.

  • I love Show of Hands; onwards and upwards!x

  • "You're on your yacht, we're on our knees", Such a powerful line.

  • The reason these guys aren't as popular as they should be is 1. their music genre, I really don't get why lotsa people don't enjoy Folk. Anwyay, 2. they tell the truth. Alot of people these days want escapism when listening to music, whether its a good song or not. They don't want to hear how the world really is ... just a thought :)

I try to do the same with my music on my Youtube page.

    Cheers :)

hope evrything is well for you

    best wishes from abroad

  • A song that says it all. Isn't that what folk is about? More like this please

  • Just can't hear this song enough - the words say so much, and its a great tune too! More please!!!

  • Tell us how you REALLY feel.

  • Incredible song! It's such a shame that it's only during such times do the best folk songs get written, but still not worth voting Tory to get them written lol

  • dear youtube.....

this video has a dislike button

    please fix this problem

  • @MrBritainrules fuck you This song is great

  • @cedrstephenson i think thats what he means, as in like 'how dare there be a dislike button' lol XD

  • @MrBritainrules nobody could dislike a video of these guys, its just there for the bankers, lawyers and mayors of the country to cry about their miniture problems XD

  • their best song

  • Usual brilliance. Saw um in Bradninch, Devon.

  • lobe you guys watched you at oxford and reading your brilliant keep it up laying all us working class people a voice and path to follow! folk is still alive

  • Powerful song !! Phalaïna

  • NFU are known in the trade as No F@cking Use.

  • what a great social comment, and yes to see William Hague listening to the lyrics ha ha!!! but it will need more than that! keep on saying it as it is.

  • Labour's second consecutive landslide victory in the 2001 election, Hague stated: "we have not been able to persuade a majority, or anything approaching a majority, that we are yet the alternative? government that they need.In the 2001 election the Torries gained only one seat from their disastrous 1997 election. Hague resigned as leader. Now we have the CleggCamSham that no one wanted. Hague listens to a song that is as much about the Con/dems as it is about banks and has the audacity to clap!

  • My Heroes! Music power on the Andrew Marr Show. Brilliant !

  • My Heroes! - Music power on the Andrew Marr Show

  • Watching William Hauge whince whilst Show of Hands performed a 'So here come the cuts' version of this song on The Andrew Marr Show this morning is the best live TV moment I've seen in ages!! Made my day (someone get it up on YouTube please!). Also noticed a big applause from Andrew Marr himself. (Loved it when Steve said sarcastically 'at least we're all in it together'!!). Top!!!!

  • brilliant song every one buy it ,made that tory squirm on tv this morning.make it no one send the greedy bas..... a message.

  • perhaps the 'dislikes' were some bankers ??? ;>)

  • This is the future of modern folk in Egnland!!!! they have not made it exclusively left or right wing! it's just common sense!! good job lads and lasses!!!

  • On a slightly related subject, I know the BBC2 folk awards are being streamed live this year; when are they? Also, Show of Hands are awesome, just thought I'd slip that in there

  • Says it all!

  • Fantastic.

Churchill, David Lloyd George, Clement Atlee, MacMillan, Harold Wilson, Herbert Asquith. They don't make them like that anymore.

  • brilliant boys (and lady), keep on kicking.

the financial sector in uk creates wealth? does it? so where has all this poverty come from then?

  • great song!

  • hi people :) please can someone tell me what this song is abouT?? its a really great track and i just want to know what the message is

  • @jsabbath01 Basically, in the UK a lot of people borrowed money from the banks and then the banks decided they wanted their money back so they increased the mortgages for homeowners. This put millions of people in debt since it meant that they owed more than the house was actually worth. And that's what the song's about.

  • @rthompson39 ahhh thanks :)

  • i sure hope that the people that pressed the didlike button because they diddnt like the music and not the message

  • Unfortunately they have not been in Holland for many years.. they are so great!!!

  • Great stuff, Mike Harding gave this bunch a good plug in today's "Grauniad" which is why I ended up here in the first place.

PS hope the young lady bassist recovers from her electric shock, must have been a nasty one that.

  • If you've never seen this band live your very next job is to go and get tickets. an utterly brilliant band. TOBERT001 you got a real treat comin!

  • @37dude37 You are right ! Utterly brilliant, it was. Everything in the set was superb. Hope to see them again soon. Their song "Santiago" is some track. Phew.

  • Every Generation produces their protest bands and songs SOHand AIG are one for this generation Now all we need is to get them to listen!

  • Truly superb, looking forward to seeing Steve and Phil live in GRINTON next month.

  • @TOBERT001

I was there at Grinton - what a gig!

Show of Hands are just so ........ good!

Great to meet Phil, Steve and Miranda after the gig and the DVD i bought has been playing every day since, and here i am checking out YouTube as well!!

    Fantastic!

  • @snackleforkofemir Agree with you ! What a gig. Steve playing a solo gig in Kirkby Stephen early next year. Third week in February-ish.

  • Great vocals, great musicians, great stupendous lyrics, its a shame more people haven't heard of this band and the message that they are trying to put over.

This could be such a great country, if only..

Keep up the great work S.O.H. Tell it like it is.

  • Very to the point, Love it. No need for abstract analogies to make this point!

  • fantastic

  • Want some cheese with the whine?

  • Ok i'm not quite sure how anyone's mouse could have gone over the dislike button never mind click on it!!

  • Love this song...If you get just one chance to see Show of Hands play.. then you must go. They do capture how well all feel and just in one song focus our thoughts into words of song. Truly they are.. modern day bards.

  • @Fireblaze63 Er, no. Her name is Miranda Sykes

  • @Fireblaze63 Fraid not ! She's actually called Miranda Sykes - and yes she is gorgeous!

  • Magnificent modern folk music biting lyrics played with passion see them live they are superb entertainers and musicians

  • was standing next to steve whilst watching the great afro celts at Shrewsburry Folk Festival great experience :)

  • damn fine words! i hope the politicians, bankers and fat cats choke, then wake up in hell,i pray that this society falls,i and mine will survive we are simple folk,i go shopping with a lamp and a knife, ive got a longdog........

  • I am a Yank and believe me, this song is my new anthem. The shite that has been going on here is exactly as sung in this fabulous song. At least we got rid of Bush, what a town clown he was, then we gave BILLIONS to banks and they turned round and gave themselves bonuses. I have been looking for a job for a year with no luck and tons of experience. I LOVE SOH and AIG is my favorite song, I play it to remind myself I am not alone in this mess. Keep up the great work!!!!

  • can't believe that radioes continue to transimt stupid songs of Lady gaga and not transmit the masterpieces of Steve and Phil!

(excuse me for my english, i'm from Italy)

  • Looking forward to seeing them in Bradninch.

  • It was Gordon Brown who set the troughs up in the first place with his refusal to effectively regulate while the tax billions were rolling in.

So what's he gonna do now he's a backbencher, just sit their with that horrible forced smile while the details of his profligacy come pouring out? Labour deserve to totally disintegrate for letting him and Blair run wild all these years...

  • What an excellent song......an anthem for the world too. I wonder if we will ever learn and/or change our ways. Songs like this do more to enlighten and inpire people than any of the nonsene that politicians are spouting these days. Thank you for sharing this and well done 'show of hands' a really brilliant band!

Listen up you...evil corrupt bankers and politicians

  • fantastic

  • saw them in sheffield last week, fucking amazing gig. they broke out into dancing in the dark by bruce springsteen in the middle of this!

  • just saw them in the Quarterhouse in Folkestone. what a brilliant night and loved this new song . Ray

  • I'm not getting an anti-captitalist feel at all. Just a well deserved third finger to those in the House of Common Criminals. Lovin' it!!

  • feck capitalism it loves the wealthy

  • Oh dear 'Rocker0375'... methinks you miss the point completely. Steve is railing against those who would 'use' the system to feather their own nests... capitalist or communist or fascist. A Class Act!

  • Like a lot of their stuff, but anti capitalist / Marxist tendencies are becoming more explicit and it turns me off completely.

I echo the sentiment about the red-head but also sadly the sentiment about "News of the World Headlines" , except its more like the Morning Star.

  • Rocker, get a life! Suggest you get up there and do something.

  • He sings it like he means it!

    What a great band!

  • At every trough you stopped to feed!

With your Arrogance Ignorance And Greed....

    <3 Love it!

  • A song with a GREAT message and done so well! I love this!!!

  • great 'folk' music.. intelligent, creative and cutting..

  • Christy Morre did similar tune called Ordinary Man=its history goes around and around again

  • people still need to shout, ok a tune on here needs listening to. liitle things can move a mountain

  • its pure honesty nowt else about it if there was more honesty we would not be in the shit we are now

  • Of course it won't make any difference but that's not the point surely...folk music is supposed to reflect the times and this song does that perfectly...as always great stuff from the boys.

  • Christy Moore did a similar tune called 'ordinary man' - not same vibe but angry with the capitalists. Music gives people a voice to say how angry and disapointed they are.

  • Oh dear. Some people really do enjoy posting comments that reveal them to have the mental capacities of a house brick. This is a record that expresses what many, many people feel. If you don't like it, fair enough. But to criticise it because of a direct lyric is beyond trite. Would you rather they only sang about 200-year-old mining disasters? It's relevant, contemporary and to the point. It's protest singing painted large.

...and the red head is lovely!

  • Comment removed

  • @jwfreelance Red head is - Miranda Sykes - she has a great voice......:-)

  • @jwfreelance ..well said that man!

  • Have to agree with skesteven. Heard this on Radio 4 the other day and had my fist in my mouth for the duration - absolutely awful! I don't claim to know anything about folk music but surely its the job of lyricists in general to enhance/deepen understanding of or connection with a subject matter rather than just setting News of the World headlines to music?

  • a quick note to "skesteven"; your a cock, their music is not about bieng smug, its about heratige and fantastic music. so if you would just like to stop posting stupid comments and leave a brilliant band alone then that would be spectacular.

  • well, this will really make a difference won't it? AIG must be quaking with fear.

Awful, smug, cosy, folk-lite. Indescribably trite, spectacularly pointless.

And they seem to have kidnapped Pink.

  • @skesteven I understand the sentiment you feel; I've been there myself. But then a wise man told me "every time you share an article or an idea about freedom, you are fanning the flames of Liberty."

You are right, things are bad. Those who have been continuously demoralized for their constant suspicions of government are now the only sane ones left.

But there is hope [however small]. We each do what we can. Musicians sing stories, writers write. Both make us think. What will YOU do?

  • Show of Hands at their best, pure brilliance xxx

  • Congratulations on the BBC Folk Awards nominations. Where's the new video for AIG?

  • I'm gonna play it this morning on The Coast 106, cos it's great! Mitch The Coast DJ

  • This band received a mention on The Coast 106 FM this morning. Apparently they're from Dorset (my home county). The presenter said he will try to get a copy of this song to play on air tomorrow. Great song. Really sums up the feelings of many in these times.

Greedy banksters and their chums at Troughminster - go to hell.

  • If your in the midlands - steve is at the musician in Leicester in feburary and SOH in May, same venue and rumour says they are doing the big session festival in Leicester to so next year a real knightly / beer / sykes fest for us :-)

  • anyone got a guitar tab/chords for this , what a great song

  • The chords are available on the 'Longdogs' website Rich.

  • great stuff - thanks , got them

now to learn it before the next singaround at the pub

  • Just looked up 'superlative' in the dictionary ... it just says .. :- see Show of Hands.

    its a false market!!!

  • Brilliant ! If there's a better lyricist alive today than Steve Knightley, I haven't found him yet. Great stuff.

  • Love Steve Knightley 2 pieces, but also love Damien Rice...if they did a duet!!!!! OMG!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • great song and video, but even better live.

  • This is one of the best live bands I have ever seen, and I've seen quite a few from all different genres. Love the way SOH incorporates relevant issues into their songs so that us fans can wave a proverbial middle finger at the establishment while singing along to it......very clever indeed. ;-)

  • Comment removed

  • Great to see a video....this really is a very poweful song with a strong message that's straight to the point.

One of my favs from your superb gig in Carlisle.

    Carol Douglas.

  • Cracking song, cracking video. Great job, lads!
