The Hudson line is by far the most scenic commuter line in the tri-state area! Only thing I dont understand is why did they only put m7s on the lower part of the line that makes local stops and not the upper half where the express trains go. Thats stupid to me if you commute to Riverdale or Yonkers which is just outside of the city you get to ride an m7 and if you have to commute to Beacon or poughkeepsie which is almost 2hrs you have to ride the older trains? How dumb is that!
@fgjfdgjf - The reason why the M-7's run on the lower half of the line is because electrification ends at Croton-Harmon. There's no third rail beyond that point. The MTA doesn't seem to have any plans to electrify this part of the former New York Central mainline. But I agree, it would be nice to ride an M-7 all the way to then end!
I remember reading that when the Genesis locomotives first came out, they were designed to only run at 30 mph max in reverse, but companies like Metro North that wanted to do push pull services, caused the Genesis to be redesigned to remove the limiter.
I was inside the cab of a P32AC-DM once. Other than that, the head end power generators sound like vacuum cleaners. On P42s the radiator fans are smaller and have a humming sound.
Yes those are the trains in War of the Worlds. Actually parts of that movie were supposed to be filmed in Cold Spring but they decided to film in Carmel for certain reasons which I will not say on here!
I know this because I live in Cold Spring... Those trains are SO annoying!!!
LIRR diesels have had problems since the start. The P32AC-DM's on MNRR have been running with extremely high reliability since they were purchased. And gratwicker...if you don't like the sounds of them, or think it's noisy, move further away from the R.R. It's been here longer than you.
I perfer the P-32s.

You wouldn't love this sound if (1) you lived in the era of steam engines or (2) you lived near the tracks. Hi Jeff! Mike
