Charlie Parker was also in love with this beautiful melody. He even quoted it during one of his solos. When geniuses meet something outstanding happens. Timeless moments of joy and beauty. A musical marvel of the 19th century, here interpreted in his inimitable way by one of the most remarkable conductors of all times.
Please note that contemporary classical music is excluded from this list. For instance, John Williams or Ennio Morricone, as great as they are, does not belong to this list.
Hey everyone, please write your favorite 5 classical music pieces(in no particular order). I will collect the results and announce them at the end of the March 2012. Like this to make it a top comment so that more people can participate in this survey.
@ROOMMYY1 No problem at all. This piece is one of my favorites by Brahms, and this performance was great. I'm just poking fun at the constant coughing at the end. :)
@maxstirner777 By strange coincidence the same with me! Got to know the lst. symphony (at exactly 15 years of age) before the 3rd but the latter became by all time favourite work of Brahms.
@HAlexTraterrestre If you listen to that piece of shit justin beiber, then dont comment on here ok. like really, why the hell did you even click on this anyway? and if you're one of those stupid people who like to make one of these comments like that just to screw with people, then stop, its really not funny. this is great music and will forever beat the shit out of justin beiber.
I have been looking for this music for YEARS, and now I have finally found it! I missed it so much because the first time I listened to it, it was the year 1998. This is just so divine and mysteriously alluring, like a beckoning finger in the darkness with promises of seductive pleasures, which becomes true, of course...
It is said he composed this inspired from his unreachable love for Klara Souman and that resembles much to a sob, every turn is like a deep breath you take when sobbing.
I often forget about the existence of this symphony, but each time it pops up on Youtube, I click on it and wonder how I could ever forget something as beautiful
Jonathan Bairstow's works are actually really influenced by this. He also has a high strike rate. The length in this is a bit sloppy sometimes and he is just generally drifting down leg.
@frodho685 What are you talking about? Brahms was a big fan of Beethoven and he said that he would expand Beethoven's legacy, the development of the melodies on the exposition of the sonata form and the symphonic ensemble (tough he wrote only four after 20 years of work on the area of composition, but they are very beethovenians)
Is that some rivalry with beehtoven's fans and brahms's fans? Cause if it exist, it doesn't make sense
@valadao I prefer Jonny Bairstow to this but Brahms and Beethoven are two different composers completely. Just look at the nibble Beethoven got in good conditions.

"Aimez-vous Brahms? " is the marvellous film with Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Perkins, made after a novel by Francoise Sagan. This simphony is performed in that film. :)
Actually, this musical theme has been used in several movies, such as "Undercurrent" by Vincente Minnelli, with Katharine Hepburn and "Goodbye again" by Anatalole Litvak.
i love listening to this in the autumn and winter.. something about this melody that does that to me.. Although it sounds more like a springtime melody
I was a ta neighbor's house playing chess, and he had the classical station on. I found myself, while playing chess, trying to guess the periods of the music I didn't recognize. I did not know who Brahms was, and when they announced his third symphony, and started with the first movement, I placed it somewhere around the romantic period and then moved my focus back to chess. Later, I heard this movement, and at some point I couldn't ignore it and I found myself totally engrossed in the music.
I don't actually mind if a recording has a bit of background noise as long as it's not blatantly obvious (such as a coughing choir, heh). I feel like it adds a feeling of...authenticity?
Either way, a fantastic work by Brahms...really beautiful. Thanks for posting.

The beautiful!!! It's sounds like a music which have used the old Finnish movies. The same dramatic and sentimental. But still so sweet and beautiful.
Brahms 3rd is one of my favorite symphonies...oddly, I believe most of my favorite are odd numbers: Brahms 3rd; Tchaikovsky 5th; Dvorak 7th and Beethoven 9th.
There's some parts that reminded me of Michael Giacchino's LOST scores. And when I mean parts-- I mean roughly 5 seconds here and there. I'm just such an nerd when it comes to that show that I find pieces of it in everything.
@levi777ish brahms was born 1 century before santana....and ur saying "this Brahms guy totally ripped of Santana's song." but i have a feeling that you're joking....
