@aderollerolls  No, he didn't have a cold. Something just tickled his nose and he sneezed just like humans often do even when they don't have a cold. Also, he was 18 years old when this video was recorded. That is very old for a lion. But, even so, I don't think he looks dull. And I definitely don't feel sorry for him because he has very good care and a good home in the Zoo.

I know that Merlin is a tawny color but he looks partially white. Same goes with one of the lionesses(maneless). Do you think they carry a few white lion genes?

@Slipsnob He is too old to be running around anywhere now. He has cataracts, and arthritis, too. But, even when he was a cub, and throughout all his adult years, he had a wonderful home and good care in the Zoo. And he probably would not have lived as long as he has (nineteen years so far) if he had been running around in the wild.

@deathbringer387 Apparently female lions in the wild also think that since they prefer to mate with males with darker manes. This male must be healthy, though, because he is nineteen years old. And I know the keepers and vets provide the best possible care for him.

@gamestomaX I have noticed that, too. I asked the Zoo vet and was told that it is not a symptom of any health problem. It may be that because they are so old for lions they are using their sense of taste to supplement their sense of smell, which is probably deteriorating as they age.

Merlin is very impressive - a 400-pound powerful lion.

Was he ever at the Zoo before the reconstruction of the Big Cat area? He does look a little familiar from when I was little. And the pale-furred lioness looks familiar too.

Do the lions now have any running space? I know that in one zoo in Chicago, a lion must chase and catch its prey before receiving meat. Does the Philadelphia Zoo have a similar program?

@awesomeH2O All four lions were born in 1991 and came to the Zoo in 1993. They were sent to the Columbus Zoo while the Carnivora House was being transformed into Big Cat Falls. But they basically lived their entire lives at the Zoo.

They have received excellent care and have outlived all but two of their offspring.

They have plenty of room, especially for such old lions, who, of course, are showing some signs of aging (cataracts, a bit of arthritis, hormone problems, etc.)

@ZooVisitorMM I am glad the Columbus Zoo generously housed them until the exhibit was completed. The Zoo is also housing the Cleveland Zoo's elephants (Jo, Moshi, and Martika) while the Cleveland Zoo is constructing its African Elephant Crossing Exhibit.

@Ometopada Sometimes I wish all parents would do what my father did. Before we entered a zoo, he would remind me we were going into the animals' territory, so we should be quiet and respectful.

He also said that we would have a much better chance of seeing animals up close if we were quiet.

Apparently most parents and teachers don't think that way now, though. It's more about letting children be "free" to be themselves ...

Well, he does have some potential benefits from living with three females, too, at least when they happen to be in a good mood, which is most of the time ...

But, for whatever reason, he is only grumpy once in a while for a minute or two right after he wakes up from a nap.

Otherwise, he is very gentle and peaceful. And the same is actually true of the females.
