ioanahogea1....I reckon the next time you have a thought....any thought...let it go. Clearly you have NO idea what this song is about, who it is for, the meaning behind it, and have probably never been to NY or Harlem for that matter. Do you know who John Coltrane is? What goes the reference to Birdland on 53 mean? What about a Love Supreme? I'm guessing not. There is not a person who has done more to help impoverished people the majority of them African women than Bono. What have you done?
it is a racist song...all angels by definition are white and they are up there whereas harlem is most of it black and they are down there...whites are on top of blacks...hmmmm.....what do you reckon?....
I thought U2 got really pretentious with this album. I love U2 but they're an alternative rock band that's what they do best they're not Miles Davis here . To come out with a film for the album ....just too much! Although this album does contain one of my favorite U2 songs "Desire". Angel of Harlem is probably my second fave on this CD.
Love the song, though I've always felt that they "borrowed" the riff from "Like a rolling stone" -- all that's missing is the opening snare! Funny given that they actually did cover a couple of Dylan songs on the album! Wonderful song, regardless. I thought that Joshua Tree was a much better album though; this and the Dylan/ Beatles covers were the best songs on Rattle and Hum.
This is quite a powerful song from Bono and company right here! "Angel Of Harlem" is one of my favorite songs by U2! I could just picture myself singing this song right now!
Anyone notice that the opening riff sounds a LOT like Manfred Mann's intro to "Pretty Flamingo"? Sounds like it's even the same key - also, U2 aren't the most original songwriters ever ;)
