That's definitely Footprints. And about a half-dozen other melodies I recognize. At one point he steals a phrase off Palladium. And another time he went into--something else. I forget. Hot clip. Like when Wayne plays tenor.
@drwinkle101 This IS Footprints. Footprints was a 6/8 blues in c minor long time ago, but for many years Wayne has been using it as a vehicle for free musical exploration - each live version is different. Listen for the theme from 5:31 on...
Thanks Mike, yes I can hear the head from around 5:30. Also at @ 3:00 bars the melody at bars 9 and 10 are heard from keyboard. So it IS Footprints, though somewhat freely elaborated.
Yes, it IS 'freely elaborated'....you can't expect Herbie & Wayne to play this tune in the same way they did back in the '60s.
They have the musical ability to reharmonize this tune, as well as many others...that was the whole point of
Miles' "Second Great Quintet"...Miles wanted them [his band] to keep those jazz standards 'fresh'...and those of us who listen will understand the lessons
A suggestion: If you have a copy of the Miles Davis 'album' "Sorcerer" on CD
[the reissued version], listen to the original released take [the one recorded with Ron Carter on bass] of "Limbo"...then compare it to the alternate take of "Limbo" [the one recorded in Hollywood with Buster Williams on bass].
The 2 versions are different in interpretation [and by the way, if you have the new liner notes by Todd Coolman, just ignore what he says about "Limbo"...].
Learn Miles' solo on the Hollywood version of "Limbo" [I assume you're a musician], to get a feel for the tune [the chord changes & the 3/4 time signature]....
Go back & forth between the 2 versions, analyzing the differences in interpretation. This should help your ear.
Look, it's either Footprints or it's not. It isn't Footprints because the bass seems vaguely to follow the form. A dog isn't a cat because it's got four legs. If I can't hear the familiar melody then it ISN'T Footprints.
Yes, it IS "Footprints"...If you listen to the version on "Miles Smiles" [from 1966]it starts in 3/4 [or in 6/8, actually] but during Miles' solo Tony Williams switches to 4/4.
Today they call that "metric modulation"...
back then, Miles & the band used to do things like that to keep the music "fresh".
Just because it's not in 3/4, or, has a "backbeat" doesn't mean it's not
Don't ask me but Wayne but from the start is the scheme still recognisable so I do not know why you say such. Ok, a bit free interpretated by Wayne itself but it is called Footprints, its live and you know how some tunes changes during the live performance over some years.............
Well, so as part1 starts and part2 ends in the end, ain't that the tune Footprints at all or am I, (and the director of this broadcast, responsable for the onscreen info, totally wrong?
Not that much a big surprise, happened before with a similar show from broadcast, all wrong titles. Have to admit I'm being publishing such without being that much informed (;
if you hear... the version of footprints with the miles quintet in 1967 on the tube..youll hear a really even more indistinguisible "free" version ..
Masters like Wayne refuse to be put in a box. The moment you are put in a box you are already dead. Love it.

Dr.Winkle:
Guess What??? It IS "Footprints'.
It is basically a blues in Cminor; the melody is stated @ around 5:30, for those of you who are paying attention...
Next, for more on the 'turnaround' used at the end of this clip, you may see the lead sheet reprinted in the Wayne Shorter biography....
Also...although it sounds 'free' or 'out', it is not...the structural architecture of the tune is clearly indicated, i.e. Cminor [I chord],
followed by the IVminor chord [Fminor], etc...
MikeNichols50 2 years ago
mmm..
ok:
a REAL MINOR (dorian) blues
take a C Dorian and a relative Fmyxolydian...
instead the tune takes a modulation of dorian mode by fourth..!!!!!!!!
agocaligiuri 2 years ago
I do not know why your comments are not clear...maybe there is a language barrier
[is English your main language???]...
Anyway...you should be aware that this is
a "modal" minor blues...that's why the IV chord is not "mixolydian"...and...
The standard minor blues would be a
I minor - IV minor - V7 progression...with the V7 chord having a flat 9th in many cases...
csilva85 2 years ago
the song is a blues in minor ,but not aeolian ,is DORIAN ..
bebop specify itself by short ,very quick, and fragmented phrases.
and many chromatic passing.
get it?
free jazz has all of that features too!
but free break every remaining rules...
its a borderline..

Also check out the following on youtube:
"Wayne Shorter Herbie Hancock Duo - Japan 1998" - this is also a performance
of Footprints...it's just Herbie & Wayne with yet another interpretation of the same
tune....
Hope you like it....

the song is linked to a chord progression ...in jazz..mister winkle..
the melody spread itself in the intro and outro..
but the solos spread away..!!
just like all the jazz solos in the world!
what we talkin about....
agocaligiuri 2 years ago
You better hope Wayne Shorter doesn't read what you wrote...because you may not be invited to play in the band....
MikeNichols50 2 years ago
wanna say:
the song is "bebopish" really fragmented..
not so catchy..
AND theres a lot of chromatic passing lines around the standard chords!!!
it aint true?????

Sorry, Mr. Agocaligiuri:
This [Footprints] is not a ''bebop" song...see my other comments above for more information...

Let me "ditto" the comments of Jazzjocke:
Yes, it IS "Footprints"...If you listen to the version on "Miles Smiles" [from 1966]it starts in 3/4 [or in 6/8, actually] but during Miles' solo Tony Williams switches to 4/4.

MikeNichols50 2 years ago
allright for the metric modulation..
but.. what kinda of odd voicings uses the piano for the solos?
..
the chords and the lines -at least in some bars-
it seems completely out of tonality!
or not?
the phrasing is so fragmented and fast that make hard bop.. quite similar to free..
agocaligiuri 2 years ago
in fact..
the bass line seems follow to the original chords progression,
but the lines are too chromatic and out of the scale for recognize the main theme mood..
maybe not?
thanks alot..

You may need to listen to this clip repeatedly to 'get it', but it is not as 'out' as you seem to think...
Listen...open your ears! Stop judging!...
because you will never unlock the secrets
by staying within the 'comfort zone' of your
preconceived ideas.
Learn to listen...listen to learn!
