Because a majority of the electorate voted for them based on progressive ideas including healthcare ,including a public option,this was a cornerstone of the obama campaign and was no secret,,,democrats had and have a popular mandate

If you add up all the people WHO DIDNT vote for Obama.
The total is higher than the people who did.
Also rule of the majority is not what this country was built on.

Single payer is very tough to do because it would mean we have to change the entire system.
We need a good public option.
