Remember static electricity forms by crackling non conductive materials, this includes fuel, so simply filling a plastic can with fuel could produce a spark. The car is insulated from the ground by wheels, this could produce a spark.
Avoid this:
1: Use a metallic petrol can.
2: Always put the can on the ground before you fill it.

Looks like a simple case of arson. Couldn't possibly be caused by static electricity (ESD). He clearly discharged himself to the truck. Looks like he dropped a match into the can and quickly backed away. He then backs away and picks up the gas nozzle and douses the entire bed of the truck with gas from front to rear, just for good measure.
@Fidocat It's not arson. This scenario has happens many times. You can't drop a match into a can, there's not enough oxygen inside a gas can due to the concentration of gasoline vapors.
So why did he think it was a good idea to spray his car with fire...? when the gas caught fire, it was originally spraying in the can til he freaked out.

Remember static electricity forms by crackling non conductive materials, this includes fuel, so simply filling a plastic can with fuel could produce a spark. The car is insulated from the ground by wheels, this could produce a spark.
Avoid this:
1: Use a metallic petrol can.
2: Always put the can on the ground before you fill it.

It took 2 seconds for the flame to light up. I love how everyone here has advice on 'what they would have done different'. If your gas can started to light up, what do you think you would have done? Calmly grab the fire extinguisher, or say 'Oh S*&T and pull the hose out? Come on.

@nonamre yea, people don't relies that the tank inside your car or a fuel container will contain the fire for a short time which is better than yanking the pump out and effectively holding a flame thrower, spreading the fire everywhere.

WHY DONT YOU guys press the big red button!!??!? its suppose to let off fire suppression in this kind of event! NEVER dont press the red button when it happens go right to it once you see a flame never ANYTHING else cause the place could blow! fire suppression will remove all the flames to the molecule level.

Why so many people dont read the warning on the gas pump...it tells you on the damn pump to turn off our cell...and not to fill cans in the back of your pickup.....put them on the ground where they are "grounded" ...OMG...someone could have been killed!

Looks like a simple case of arson. Couldn't possibly be caused by static electricity (ESD). He clearly discharged himself to the truck. Looks like he dropped a match into the can and quickly backed away. He then backs away and picks up the gas nozzle and douses the entire bed of the truck with gas from front to rear, just for good measure.

@Fidocat It's not arson. This scenario has happens many times. You can't drop a match into a can, there's not enough oxygen inside a gas can due to the concentration of gasoline vapors.
