  • It is clear that Barrett's post-Floyd solo compositions 1968-1970 tower above other artists of the era, perhaps with the exception of Arthur Lee.

As for his retreat to Cambridge, a world class University and center for scientific and creative thought, Barrett did what he says he will do in this composition, living a "life that comes of no harm.

In many ways Barrett's life in Cambridge can be compared to that of the famous 20th century philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein.

  • i just came in my pants.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR GENIUSSSSSS!!!!!!!

  • Brillliant track :)

  • On this day in 1970, Barrett was released. RIP Syd Barrett, as we watch whatever today's generation decides is music, yours will always be at heart <3

  • Not many brilliant musicians appear, but man, Syd was amazing. His stuff is so damn good.. I love it

  • Ok for everyone thinking he played the guitar backwards literaly he didnt he recorded the track and looped the gutar backwards by flipping the tape over and it was put on the track that way. He was the first to do so.

  • john frusciante did his first album whit backwards guitar ...<3 syd <3

  • Wasn't Jimmi Hendrix the first to start playing guitar backwards?

  • @7h3tSLDR02 The beatles were [someone might have even done it before them!] Story is: John accidently put a tape in backwards for the vocals in Rain at his house and that is where the "backwards phenomenon" came from . they exploited the sound in Revolver and nearly all their psychedelic albums had something backwards

  • fun fact: david gilmour (guitarist for pink floyd) played drums on this track

  • @metallicarules1234 and syd has played the guitar but it didn't fit with the track, and he say, reverse the recorded guitar sound, and it's fit perfectly

  • @metallicarules1234 Fun fact Syd Barret was a founding member of Pink Floyd.

  • @InlineFury1 Fun fact; this accomplishes nothing.

  • The most beautiful,moved and sad Syd's song....and Shine

  • syd played the guitars however he spliced the recorded tapes together backwards himself so that they would fit with the beat by hand, dave gilmour told me on telly. a really difficult thing to do and not many people can do it still today. genius!!!!

  • This song is so precious...

  • Syd plays all guitars

  • It's a shame Syd had the problems he did. So much genius trapped in his head, if only he would have been able to get all of it out.

  • Let Syd Barrett rape your ears

  • @EurekaSkateShopBite

if you let him its not rape

  • The mandrax shuffle

  • I wonder how...

this song still makes me after all this years

    thank you Barret

  • What a genius. Who else would have said 'just play the guitar backwards and it'll be fine'?. There's nobody like him now.

  • @zorman1875 I hate to burst your bubble, but thousands of artists do this.

  • @pinkstarburst95 Yes I agree with you byt not in Syds Time recording

  • @pinkstarburst95 Yes I agree with you but not in Syds Time recording

  • @pinkstarburst95 Not during that time, plus just the fact that he didn't even have to listen to it backwards to make his mind up about it is awesome.

  • @pinkstarburst95 but he did it in a diffrent way

  • @pinkstarburst95 do not forget that he did invent some really creative techniques like playin d guitar with a zippo lighter that stuck with the band even after his departure (i remeber listenin to it on a saucerful of secrets) n yes thousands of artists do that but thousands of aritists weren't from the 50's or 60's.

  • @pinkstarburst95 who in 1970?

  • @pinkstarburst95 Yes but Syd started it. And Syd was so out of his mind that it worked perfectly.

  • @pinkstarburst95

Well, thousands.... True, it has been done occasionally now, but was certainly still very original back in 71.

It's also very difficult - and according to David Gilmour, Syd did get it right the very first time!

He, an extraordinary musician himself, still calls it "mindboggling".

  • @pinkstarburst95 i think the whole wow-factor comes from, he was actually in the studio struggling to play it forwards, so they asked him to try playing it from backwards instead, and it was only when he played it this way that he was able to play the notes correctly, and that is why the guitar track is reversed in the song. it wasn't necessarily for artistic purpose, rather that was the only way he was capable of actually playing the track in his frame of mind.

  • @breeg that is what i read in a biography at least lol.

  • @pinkstarburst95 Back in the sixties?

  • @pinkstarburst95 Successfully though?

  • @pinkstarburst95 i think your missing the point of knowingness. today we know but then we didn't thats why theres nobody like him!

  • @pinkstarburst95 Yeah....after copying Syd.

  • @zorman1875 the beatles..

  • @zorman1875 Well the fact he got it on the first take is amazing.

  • @zorman1875 YOU HAD TO BE CRAZY TO MAKE MUSIC LIKE THIS TRUE LUNA GENIUS

  • @zorman1875 Also, it was an accident, he didn't do it intentionally.

  • Rick Wright on Hammond and electric piano

Dave Gilmour on drums, he must have also done the backwards guitar?

incredible atmosphere on this, and no overdubs

has quite the feel of The Doors' Riders

but that came out a year later

  • @Mehefinheulog1 No, Syd did the guitar. I remember hearing that they played it and it didn't come out right, so they turned the track backwards and it came out perfect.

  • how incredible

this way ahead of its time

he was a bit of a genious wasn't he

  • @pinkstarburst95 No, in a video interview Dave says that he played the electric guitar part.

  • @pinkstarburst95 If you don't believe me, look at the video in the recommendations box. Dave played the drums and the electric.

  • @LucidDream As stated before, it is Syd on backward guitar. One take, after a couple of failed takes forward.

  • @N0iseNinja Congrats!

  • @pinkstarburst95 Gilmour said that they played the whole track backwards and syd overdubbed with straight-forward-guitar, and then they turned it again...

  • @Mehefinheulog1 The guitar track is Syd himself apparently without any editing according to David Gilmour {The Pink Floyd & Syd Barrett Story DVD}

  • @atomage1000 there seems to be a bit of a debate about who did what and how. Oh well, that guitar part has always sounded backwards to me, but the whole thing still brilliant

  • @Mehefinheulog1 The backwards guitar was done by Syd Barret. David Gilmour told that on a Syd documental.

  • this music I was going through a dark time thanks Syd for helping me xxx <3

  • howard moon at 2:34

  • can't get this stuff out of my head. such a haunting tune. he wasn't gone yet at this point, but you can definitely hear that he was going in a few songs...

  • 0:50 looks like Cobain somehow

  • One person is deaf.

I wonder why one should surf on Youtube, watching a video he doesn't like only to thumb it down. It's such a bad behaviour, especially when we are talking about a person who has passed away. Please, respect him, otherwise don't see his videos!

  • real nice...such a good good recording. Thanks!

  • 2:35

Sounds like an early take of "Money"

  • listen to the new fall album our future your clutter

  • This is Pop/Rock Recording Artist Robert Nix,I have Barrett's solo albums in my collection-what a songwriter who went over to 'the other side'

  • "My personal favorite of early Pink Floyd."

It's not Pink Floyd...it's Syd Barrett.

  • there are some pics in here I have never seen in all my time and I have seen most-impressive

  • The saddest song I ever heard.

  • syd inspires me to be a writer

    RIP syd :'(

  • Yeah, that backward guitar is fucking cool man, this guy was a visionary, I think he realized that humanity was fucked along time before anyone else he hung out with though, be good if he had tempered his drug use a little, I have gone off the deep end a few times, luckily my friends managed to get me in the door of the unit, rather than what happened with Syd, may he RIP.

  • I could live in that room. He had good taste. It suited him well.

  • Ever try staring back into Syd's eyes, when you feel like he looks?

  • @Way2manydoses

"Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky."

  • GENIOOOO!!!!!!

  • oh man!

    Good stuff and awesome Pictures!

  • some of the pics u left too long

    but otherwise good video

  • It is a little known fact that David Gilmour plays drums in this song

  • @willoughbyorama That's not even all he did. He produced this album, played drums, and did some keyboard parts too I believe.

  • at 0:46 he looks like Martin Johnson from boys like girls.

  • @traemorgan18 dont relate syd barrett to that peice of shit band

  • I just got laid off from Domino's Pizza and this song is making me cry.

Not really. Boys don't cry, but I'm real sad,

  • Bah! Who needs them! Go work at Pizza Hut!

  • @pinkstarburst95 You and Iiiiii and pizza hut... hmmm doesn't really seem to go aswel.

  • @DnTTrix08 : D

  • @bjsparntz thou hast made me hugry

  • @bjsparntz wow it's going to suck when some real drama happens in your life, haha you will be upset for years.

  • @bjsparntz You need to toughen yourself up, mate.

You got laid off from a Pizza place! It's not a career choice. You're just earning a few quid till your ready to setting into a proper career.

You're hardly one of North England's miners in the 80's.

  • Does anyone else hear a cough at 1:40?

  • @mario64guy yes :)

  • syd's hey day was in the 60s....nice try tho

  • Syd Barrett is so amazing...one of the greatest music writers of the 70's. Its too bad hes not around ne more :(

  • Nice one mate. Some good pics there!

  • priceless

  • Has anyone ever played the guitar track "backward" to see how Syd actually played it?

  • I'm pretty sure he just used his hands like anyone else.

  • @the1yage - They played the backing on reverse - and Syd played along. They then played the song forward and voila!

Dave Gilmour said that he was amazed as it is a very hard thing to do, playing along to a track in reverse but it only took Syd one take! Great stuff.

  • hey

    0:38....his girlfriend was so hot

    Syd forever!

  • Wait, it's not a drone. It more like "Whoa-o-o-o."

  • What is the faint droning sound around 1:58? You can hear it better on other YouTube posts. Maybe just the reverse guitar track? Sounds like a ghost. Hehe.

  • Nice pics.. Syd is so beautiful. Music Excellent.. T'was a pleasure to watch Thank you pinkstarburst

  • A similar idea as the one I thought of, only mine was more of an LCD trip than anything else, to really stretch my mind to get into the spirit of the sixties.

  • lcd is a tv if im not mistaken.

lsd is the drug friend :)

  • Poser?...u didnt even spell LSD right haha

  • nice..5 stars

  • Man, was I born in the wrong decade. Music today isn't even really music. It's all done with computers now. Just because I can play the radio, it doesn't make me a musician...and any 3rd grader can rhyme.

I MISS YOU SYD!!! Thankfully, we still have Mr. Waters.

  • Well, hes not in his prime, but im still thankful to have him.

  • good words, the two of these men were the true genius behind (the) Pink Floyd

  • @OneClownShoe I feel really sorry for people who keep saying there is no good music left. Of course you won't find it if you listen to the radio. If you really want some good new bands I would be more than happy to reccomend some. I am a diehard Syd Barrett/Pink Floyd fan so I hope you can trust my judgement.

  • @PierceMarratoo. I would be thankful if you recommended me a band and an album from the band to listen to. I need to listen to some good new music, so please.

  • @pinkstarburst95 The dodos - the season is really good, but that's not really this genre. You should try some Nick Drake (his river man is really good)

    good luck mate

  • @PierceMarratoo

I totally Agree I love Syds Music

  • @PierceMarratoo make some suggestions please.

  • @PierceMarratoo okay pierce i havent really heard any good new music but I figure there is some, so who ya pointing out, i'd love to hear some new real music ya know, have a good night chapp

  • @OneClownShoe I feel the same way.

  • @OneClownShoe and Mr. Gilmour

  • @OneClownShoe, I suggest you give Fleet Foxes a listen. They are brilliant.

  • @OneClownShoe GENIUS

  • @OneClownShoe Well the problem is not music done in computers. I bet Syd would love to experiment with the plethora of effects possible on a computer.

THe problem is the lack of experimentalism in a general way. But there are always some rather underground bands experimenting, just look for them.

  • @OneClownShoe nd David.....................

  • @OneClownShoe And Gilmour!

  • @OneClownShoe That's a very crass evaluation of electronic music.

I love Syd, and I actually think that were he a young guy around today he's be very into electronic sounds as well as tradiontional instruments.

Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but please do try to keep an ear open for decent electronic music.

  • great great song i love it 1000 stars ***********
