I've always loved Woodface as an album and must have listened to this song hundreds of times... only this morning, four months after my wife passed away has this song hit me like a steam train. Every word could be about her. There is God given songwriting talent.... and then there is Neil Finn. I dont know how the hell he does it, but God, I'm glad he does.
my fave song of all time.... but what on earth is sinead doing there except for looking beautiful???? Did they do a yoko to her and turn off her mike?
Its is NOT about his mom...its from Woodface, which came out in 1991, his mom died around 2002. Its actually about a friend of his who died. He and Tim Finn did write songs about their mom after she died, which are on the second Finn album.
I knew,I knew it was always about Mum.When i very first heard it ,i chose it for my Mother.Thankyou Neil. How you can sing a heartbreaker with a subtle smile is just wonderful. You are so gifted.
I think he wrote this in honor of his mother (Mary?), who passed. Neil's an incredible songsmith who seems to dwell in a world without end, himself; HE goes on & on , writing & singing such original things through DECADES. Long live this cute Kiwi...
From what I had read. yes Neil did write this for his late mother. A beautiful and moving tribute to her and I was surprised when I saw Sinead on here since there was nothing noted pn the video listing. She really keeps it light and is just there for the harmony.
What's also really lovely is how he writes songs that can be taken differently, i.e., it's sweet to know it's about "mom", but could be to one who doesn't know, another poetic, fictionalized song, like his (solo work) "Astro". ("I don't know what it's about."-N.F.)
Neil's in fine form, but I missed the stronger harmony part as in the recorded version. Knowing how powerful Sinead can be, I was surprised that one could barely hear her.
When my grandmother died after a long illness back in Jan. 2001 I posted a webpage with the lyrics to "She Goes On" as a tribute to her memory. The tone and words of the song seemed to fit the lives of my late grandparents so well--a few artists from differing musical gendres have covered this song since "Woodface" came out in '91. Another powerful testament to Neil's amazing songwriting.
He's also written a song with Tim for their mother called "Mary of the South Seas"...which discussed her move from Ireland to Australia...quite nice actually. It's on a compilation of Irish artists...the name escapes me at the moment..as the FINN BROTHERS, they've performed it live many times...
Correction: his mother's move from Ireland to NEW ZEALAND. Neil and Tim Finn are NEW ZEALANDERS. They were born in Te Awamutu. They are NOT Australians.
I know. I am a New Zealander. My brother was in Tim Finn's class at school!

Am I the only one who thinks this dude sounds like James Taylor?????? He does... and I seriously groove on his sound. Gorgeous!

@NadLou: yes, indeed. He screwed up his own song, but otherwise. He makes a perfect performance. I love this song, I love his voice.

Funny that Neil messes up the lyrics. He laughs, too. "They were a lifetime together..." repeated when he forgets the line.

It was written well before his mother died. The story I heard was that it was written for a friend's mother.
He did write a song for his mother that appeared on One Nil.
