I think personally that this performance is one of the best Rusalka ever sung by non-native (czech) singer. Her Czech is understandable and pretty good and singing is simply beautifull. Of course Me as a native Czech could hear some differences from perfect czech language, but this is quite acceptable and i was really nicely surpriced by the way she sang it. she is better Rusalka than anyone i know accept milada šubrtová and deffinitely top sinnger..
Odd that Fleming basically raised this Opera from the dead, if her Czech is so poor! And that she would have not gotten any language coaching in the MAJOR houses in which she sang this role. On the other hand, Milada Subrtova, cited in the hate posting below, has no profile in the great international houses AT ALL.
She is the best! I am trying to find this aria on imslp.org, and it is on there; I read music but I don't read Russian! I hope I find it eventually, I'd love to sing it!
wasn't it Renee that did Taise? ( i don't think i spelled that right) i LOVE her voice and think that she has become the leader for future opera singers
@MusicWarden Yes, she did Thaïs. And also Manon (by Massenet), which she rocked out of this world. :)
And she really has a wonderful voice. Even when her technique falters (not here, but other occasions), her beautiful voice makes you forgive and forget quite quickly.
-a few corrections to the Czech text.....greets Lukas from Czech Rep.
Brava !
Some nice things but hate when she starts that wrong way of speaking full of air that she does. It takes her middle voice out of the way. Sounds a little too airy and I don´t like it. Besides that, the rest is nice. Like Ana María Martínez version better.
it´s preposterous that a group of people would take away all the magic from this beautiful tragic love stroy and make it into a children stroy. the little mermaid was such an awful version of this stroy.
Rusalka is a nice love story. The end is very sad. Because the prince falls in love to princess. And Rusalka will change into will-o'-the-wisp ( aria He can not give you the whole world ). Princess will relinquish the prince. And prince wants the Rusalka back... but is not it so easy.
It´s interesting to read or find here almost nothing in relation to Lucia Popp - i think most writers haven´t seen Onegin65´s video (see also: views-relation): if they have ears to hear and eyes to see .......... (a rare art today: the singer should be Rusalka, not do like Rusalka).
Renée Fleming sinds this way better than Anna Netrebko and I'll tell you why - Anna has better pronounciation tis true (czech is not far from russian after all), but her voice feels heavy in this aria, she has somewhat deeper voice than Renée. Renée has clearer and higher voice and that not only makes it sound better, but she also has better technique than Netrebko and she plays with the tunes, fondles them and it makes her performance much more emotional.
@hawkins347 Netrebko doesn't do that and that makes her performance not only dull and uncreative but in comparison it sounds like it's sang by schoolgirl (even i can sing it that way without trouble and i have no vocal training whatsoever) while Renée's performance sounds like true opera.
@hawkins347 I agree with most everything you say, but would disagree about pronunciation. Renee's is virtually native, while Netrebko's has a harsher Russian accent. Czech and Russian are both slavic, yes, but Czech is much softer, gentler with fewer guttural sounds and softer vowels. Fleming grew up with Czech and really is spot on, in my opinion.
Now, I'm not a native speaker, so would happily be corrected by a Czech native speaker. :)
@toobusywriting well i'm native speaker :D i don't doubt renée has czech ancestors and probably is able to speak czech but well... if you were czech you would find renée's accent and pronouncation a little bit funny sometimes (but it's cute) :) i think czech accent is even harsher than russian when spoken by natives, the main difference between the accents is that russian one is influenced by french language, while czech one is more influenced by german language (which is of course harsher)
@toobusywriting I am a native speaker, and I find her pronounciation very poor... some of the more special consonants she cannot pronounce at all, but (this is a generalisation) I have found that English speakers generally do have more trouble picking up the accents and prosody of other languages. I wonder why.. More than this, however, I find her inappropriate glissandi and often weird phrasing annoying. Listen to Milada Subrtova (here on youtube) and you will see what I mean.
Like manna for the soul...woe to the ears...pain for the heart...Only lovers that were never reciprocated can feel it... I adore her and this Aria....I only wish I could die in Prague listening to her pleading tearful and painful song.....Then I would live forever....
I've just watched this to compare with Anna Netebko's performance. Compared to Fleming, Netrebko sounds very harsh in tone: if I were the Moon i wouldn't give her anything, not even the fatal gift she seeks. But for Fleming... well, if she wants to be mortal, let her be mortal! She is an incomparable artist.
This incredible performance always makes me weep. Remember that the love of a rusalka for a mortal is doomed from outset--the English horn solo after the second verse is the "death" motive, Renee's ravishing voice captures this pathos. "Beda, rusalka, beda!" (Woe to thee, rusalka, Woe!)
This is the only role i like Fleming in. She is by far supirior to Slut Netrebko. The only thing that puts Netrebko apart from Paris Hilton is that, Netrebko had a better singing teacher. They both are skanks. One rich, the other one had to work for her money, but both trashy and even the whores that work Santa Monica Boulevard have more class.
There will never ever be a more congenial version of this beautiful Dvorak song; Thank you Renee Fleming!! Breathtaking - Indeed!!! You Must certainly be Blessed!
Also, you give an immense lot of comfort to all those depraved of/not able to receive Love. ******
Thanks for share this vid, is great. did someone know where can I find this opera ? I mean the full opera, if is posible with subtitles, english or spanish is fine.
by the way, reneé rulz this piece, is much much better than netrebko, and I like netrebko too
When I hear Renée sing I always think I have been made love to through my ears. I love the way she coos out the pianos. She does not try to sing like a dramatic soprano. She is very careful to drop phrases in order to give the music contours. Her singing is full of sensuality and pathos. There have been and will be more powerful voices. But she is concentrating on magic. She is committed to finding and displaying the magic of the phrasing and music. She is a true artist.
@deutschefach I agree 100%!!!!!!!!!...she was born to sing this aria.Yes...love through the ears and food for the soul. You have really stated it to perfection deutchefach!!!
She is incredible. And although born and raised in upstate New York, she is of Czech ancestry! So - CZPatriot, rest assured, you're right - and so is SHE!!
Wow, she sings in czech!. that's pretty good... i love rusalka :-) czech republic doesn't have ocean (mermaids), but we have lots of woods (rusalkas), so it makes sense, why Dvorak named his piece that way :-)
A new found favourite piece of music for me! Would love to see it performed in Prague!
Also, one of the reasons many people are not interested in classical music in general is because of the snobbery involved. I have friends who are actually scared to talk about classical music for fear of being chastised by elitists. It really makes very little difference whether you call it a song or an aria. An aria is a type of song, so calling it a song isn't really incorrect anyway!
Breathtaking. Renee breathes life into this aria like I have never heard from any other soprano. Whether you want to call it a 'song' or an 'aria' is unimportant. As long as you feel completely captivated by her beautiful voice she is doing her job to perfection in my opinion.
Hey, I'm no expert in Czech, but she's doing everything she needs to in order to produce the optimum sound for this aria. If you have ever been to an English opera, you'll notice that the sung language is not like the spoken language either. Why do you think it's hard to understand? The most important thing to a singer is producing the best sound possible, even if that means bending the language a bit to fit us.
Netrebko's vesion of this is sooo much better! Anna sings REAL Dvorak's Rusalka, while Fleming is producing a cowgirl's song which has nothing to do with the theme.
@tenor220 Netrebko is just the hotter playboy version bringing us young adults into the world of opera than the classic beauty of Renee who we will learn in time is better!
as to me... her czech is really good. i don't know what you people want ... every foreign language is difficult, especially the czech one... i understand her well and that's important for me .....
@TwilightMusique1 The last time I played this with an orchestra (I'm a harpist), the singer held one of these notes so long that the first flute choked! It really was hilarious; the woodwinds couldn't stop giggling. I'll always remember that. And I'm playing it again this month!
Miss Judith has it right below. This is an aria Fleming owns now and her interpretation bring soul into her expression. Remember Callas's singing not so long ago did the same; even notes cracked as part of its beauty.
Forgive an obvious note that I should have included: Ms. Fleming's "Song.." here is breath-taking, heavenly, human yet angelic. Musical "Perfection" after all, is not exact notes but the blend of emotion, with the heart and soul of the artist breathing life into the melody that Dvorak has so wonderfully given to us.
In a performance, I believe (having sung myself a little) the singer tends to want to "interpret" for the audience what is being said.... so musically, the melody would take "second place". The temptation is there and Ms. Fleming is above all - "for her audience".
I like her generally, she is a very good singer, but why in that aria she does glisando all the time..? and for me the tempo is too slow, it's boring. not beautiful unfortunatelly:( I prefer Anna Netrebko in that aria (the 4th link)
I totally agree with you, she used to sing is much better in her earlier years. Now she scoops all the time all over the place making it sound like a cheap cabaret song. And yes, the tempo is too slow. The original score indicates "larghetto" as the right tempo and this one seems more like "lento". That's the conductor's problem though. Even though I believe that Fleming shows a lot more musical intelligence for this piece, Netrebko makes it sound better.
I love her voice, but what's with holding the last B-flat for ten seconds? Another recording on youtube shows her singing this with a less fermata at the end. But a Diva will be a Diva! :)
Fleming is an excellent singer, and people who cannot give constructive criticism, without being biased should shut up. At the end of the day they themselves arent qualified or do not have the GUTS to do what this artist is doing.
Please don't argue about this. Youtube has already too many examples of people offending others through their bitter comments. Just enjoy this beautiful music which is a gift for all of us.
rusalka should be a mythic water creature - gentle, frail... and in this song she should be very sad and so hopeless that she´s asking moon for help - you should feel all that sadness from her voice - her voice whould make you cry... rene looks like a normal woman who run from home at night - her voice starts to be a little sad in 2nd half and she´s smiling sometimes - how shall i trust her singing? i do not... (btw. she should work more on her pronunciation, but i understand - it´s not easy)
i was just writing my opinion - sorry that you´re not able to accept it else than with agression - when i say that she´s not "excelent as usual", i´m bad - that´ s stupid and sad
you've stooped to name calling from merely being condescending? I would very much like the peanut gallery to "step up to the plate" and show the rest of us how it's done. It seems many people feel the urge to share their "opinions" about great musicians etc. but few people actually have the talent or guts or heart to perform. Of course you are one of tens of thousands that have joined this Cyber Peanut Gallery and I don't mean to pick you out personally, I don't know who you are.
I seen her perform Rusalka last march at the Met, she had everyone in the audience in tears when she sung this aria. To hear her in person is truly a religious experience!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I wish she would stop wimpering on every frickin' phrase! SING girl!!! I can't think of any great singer who wimpered all the time - it's not beautiful or elegant.
Also it is not easy to sing in Czech language if you are not native and I think she is coping with Czech language quite well considering:o)))). It it was in English, she would be magnificent.
oh, I love this song! And nobody sings it better than Fleming, she is magnificent! I heard her live once, and it was like listening to an angel. I have never experienced anything like it.
Netrebko has a strong foundation, a huge range, a fabulous sound and a LOT of flexibility in her voice. She got many prestigious awards. She is adored by hundreds of prominent musicians including James Levine, Joan Sutherland, Pavarotti and Domingo not to mention millions of opera lovers. She is a great talent who joined a roster of past musician awards nominees that includes Martha Argerich, Leonard Bernstein, Igor Stravinsky and Mstislav Rostropovich. But you are entitled to your own opinion.
Recognition is not everything. Opera singers tend to be kind and complimentary toward their colleagues especially in public. Domingo has gotten many awards and compliments as well but he also was very overrated vocally especially 1980 onward. Again, I didn't say she wasn't talented. I think she has a nice but not incredible voice which she has misused. I do not consider her in the same league as Ponselle, Tebaldi, Sutherland, Kirsten, Caballe etc, etc......
I like her and it.

As wonderful as this versions might be, Anna Netrebko has the edge over Renee's rendition. This just does not have the some passion.
BobUppendown 1 year ago
Hey, I'm no expert in Czech, but she's doing everything she needs to in order to produce the optimum sound for this aria. If you have ever been to an English opera, you'll notice that the sung language is not like the spoken language either. Why do you think it's hard to understand? The most important thing to a singer is producing the best sound possible, even if that means bending the language a bit to fit us.
gwrapoza 2 years ago
Netrebko's vesion of this is sooo much better! Anna sings REAL Dvorak's Rusalka, while Fleming is producing a cowgirl's song which has nothing to do with the theme.
maa10able 2 years ago
@maa10able You must be on drugs if you think Netrebko is better than Renee.

@tenor220 Netrebko is just the hotter playboy version bringing us young adults into the world of opera than the classic beauty of Renee who we will learn in time is better!

@Opera88 You are right. Netrebko is a hot skank, too bad for her her carrear will fade away as her beauty does.

Brava diva. Who cares if the b-flat was too long... it was glorious.

She held that top Bflat too long (although faultlessly) it was showing off.. great stuff though

Horrible. Bad Czech language, misunderstood... Fleeming as Rusalka no more!
toyenne 2 years ago
Forgive an obvious note that I should have included: Ms. Fleming's "Song.." here is breath-taking, heavenly, human yet angelic. Musical "Perfection" after all, is not exact notes but the blend of emotion, with the heart and soul of the artist breathing life into the melody that Dvorak has so wonderfully given to us.
JudithMatta 2 years ago 12
In a performance, I believe (having sung myself a little) the singer tends to want to "interpret" for the audience what is being said.... so musically, the melody would take "second place". The temptation is there and Ms. Fleming is above all - "for her audience".
JudithMatta 2 years ago
I like Renee very much, but Lucia Popp is the best I've heard as Rusalka...

Renée Fleming is the best diva for Dvořák´s Rusalka :-)

She has undoubtedly a beautiful voice, and Netrebko is wonderful, but Von Stade outwins them both in voice and in grace.

aireen58 2 years ago 3
I like her generally, she is a very good singer, but why in that aria she does glisando all the time..? and for me the tempo is too slow, it's boring. not beautiful unfortunatelly:( I prefer Anna Netrebko in that aria (the 4th link)
madziua90 2 years ago
I totally agree with you, she used to sing is much better in her earlier years. Now she scoops all the time all over the place making it sound like a cheap cabaret song. And yes, the tempo is too slow. The original score indicates "larghetto" as the right tempo and this one seems more like "lento". That's the conductor's problem though. Even though I believe that Fleming shows a lot more musical intelligence for this piece, Netrebko makes it sound better.
sopera123 2 years ago
I love her voice, but what's with holding the last B-flat for ten seconds? Another recording on youtube shows her singing this with a less fermata at the end. But a Diva will be a Diva! :)

the tempo is too slow, and her voice annoys me here...she is better in mozart operas...

Fleming is an excellent singer, and people who cannot give constructive criticism, without being biased should shut up. At the end of the day they themselves arent qualified or do not have the GUTS to do what this artist is doing.

rusalka should be a mythic water creature - gentle, frail... and in this song she should be very sad and so hopeless that she´s asking moon for help - you should feel all that sadness from her voice - her voice whould make you cry... rene looks like a normal woman who run from home at night - her voice starts to be a little sad in 2nd half and she´s smiling sometimes - how shall i trust her singing? i do not... (btw. she should work more on her pronunciation, but i understand - it´s not easy)
vocinka87 2 years ago
perhaps you would like to show us how it's done, post a video of yourself singing, or, pass the peanuts.
ericheretoday 2 years ago 3
i was just writing my opinion - sorry that you´re not able to accept it else than with agression - when i say that she´s not "excelent as usual", i´m bad - that´ s stupid and sad
vocinka87 2 years ago
you've stooped to name calling from merely being condescending? I would very much like the peanut gallery to "step up to the plate" and show the rest of us how it's done. It seems many people feel the urge to share their "opinions" about great musicians etc. but few people actually have the talent or guts or heart to perform. Of course you are one of tens of thousands that have joined this Cyber Peanut Gallery and I don't mean to pick you out personally, I don't know who you are.
ericheretoday 2 years ago
I think you're taking some unfair hits. I assume you know Czech and know what Dvorak had in mind.
Perhaps the Sarah Brightman version has the frailness you desire. It's posted on YouTube.

Mullemolle 2 years ago 2
I have nothing against her personally but I stand by my view that vocally she is very overrated.
ShawDAMAN 2 years ago
Netrebko has a strong foundation, a huge range, a fabulous sound and a LOT of flexibility in her voice. She got many prestigious awards. She is adored by hundreds of prominent musicians including James Levine, Joan Sutherland, Pavarotti and Domingo not to mention millions of opera lovers. She is a great talent who joined a roster of past musician awards nominees that includes Martha Argerich, Leonard Bernstein, Igor Stravinsky and Mstislav Rostropovich. But you are entitled to your own opinion.
sorkin777 2 years ago
Recognition is not everything. Opera singers tend to be kind and complimentary toward their colleagues especially in public. Domingo has gotten many awards and compliments as well but he also was very overrated vocally especially 1980 onward. Again, I didn't say she wasn't talented. I think she has a nice but not incredible voice which she has misused. I do not consider her in the same league as Ponselle, Tebaldi, Sutherland, Kirsten, Caballe etc, etc......
