Everytime I watch this video, that is what sticks with me - how much he loves his wife, his family, and life itself. Let's all continue to pray for his family and all he touched with that big smile of his.
That place was electric, listen to the crowd, this is one Indy 500 that i will remember forever i've watched the Indy 500 since i was 4, and certain Indy 500's is the ones i remember. Dan Wheldon will forever be know as a Unbeaten Indy 500 champion and its amazing as we didnt know but god knew that this was his last chance the previous 2 years dan had finished 2nd and i thought it was going to be 3 in a row but he got to experience his biggest thrill and glory at the Indianapolis 500 mile race.
NBC flat out sucks, they sat there the whole time watching Hilldebrand and didnt realize Wheldon took the lead until about 10 feet from the finish line. Your job is to REALIZE what is happening and announce it, not to confuse the shit out of everyone.
Two things made this extra sweet for Dan: he won his second Indy 500 from nowhere and beat the team that fired him at the end of 2010 in favour of Hildebrand. Still feel a bit sorry for Hildy; it was of course his own fault for not being more cautious, but still, no-one wants to go through that on the grandest stage in their sport.
@azapro911 Any way you look at it, Hildebrand was an idiot for crashing yards from the finish line! Being so far ahead on the last lap, he had almost no pressure. He started celebrating too early, and lost his concentration! Since knowing what happened to Wheldon last month, so glad he was able to win this in May!! RIP, Dan Wheldon!!!!
@groundhog2008 I know, I couldn't believe what I was seeing at the time! It ranks up there with F3000 driver Bjorn Wirdheim slowing on the pit straight at Monaco to celebrate with his team - so much so that another driver passed him and won, for which Bjorn has now gone down in YouTube infamy for! For his own sake, Hildebrand must win one before his career is over, because it's not like an Andretti curse - that is something that haunts you subconciously forever. But a great final win for Dan.
I think that honestly Hildebrand would have gladly let Dan Wheldon win if he knew that the guy would die not long after that. Rest in peace Dan Wheldon.
Its eerie.5 months ago,Dan wins the 500.and 5 months later, hes gone.goodbye Dan.rest in peace,my friend.one of the best open wheel drivers I have ever seen.
For all the rule experts watch the finish the caution comes out after the checkered flag so there is no ruling for that. And hildebrand couldn't keep going so he would have lost either way. Dan Wheldon Rules!!!
what if jr didnt pass the finish line???? is the whole damn field supposed to stop behind him??? I think not,, and the yellow didnt come out til weldon passed him!
@Hlover01 Pause it at :53 and you can clearly see the green light is still on when Wheldon passes Hildebrand. There is no question that Wheldon won this race.
The rules dictate that the finish would normally revert back to the running order on the previous lap--Lap 199, which Hildebrand led--but because Hildebrand caused the yellow, the results will stand. "[IndyCar Race Director] Brian Barnhart explained to us that because JR was a wounded car on the last lap, he was fair game," said Barnes. "I'm fine with that. It's a classy decision and we're not going to protest."
@Hlover01 If you look at the video Wheldon passes Hilebrand at 2:43 and the Caution isnt pulled out until 2:46 so under the rules technically hes fine
@Hlover01 You post that directly under documentary proof that the caution came out after Wheldon completed the pass? That's a fairly big fail in itself. Check it out: 0:51 Wheldon takes the lead; 0:53 the light goes yellow. That's at least 2 seconds later. Besides, since when have drivers not been able to pass a mobile wreck? When Tagliani was crawling back to pit road after bending his right side earlier in the race, the caution was out and yet he was still being passed.
Unbelievable! As the JR Hildebrand managed this feat? The guy walked 249 laps and doing everything right in the last curve at the head close to victory and the prize of 1 million dollars, he gave me one of these primes? Can anybody answer me if the runner wins anything?
It did not help make strategy, save fuel, to get it on the last lap ...

It did not help make strategy, save fuel, to get it on the last lap ...
For me, the biggest FAIL of the year!

Talk about big fails...It's only a 200 lap race, not 250....
No cares what 2nd place pays
HammerQQ 9 months ago
@VibeRock2008
A: The race is 200 laps not 250
B: The lapped car was more of a factor than fuel
C: The way the race ended & everything that has happened since makes this race seem like it was destined to end this way...
