The iPhone 3G can't have the compass app because it does not have an onboard magnetometer, as the 3GS does. Also, Apple does stuff like this all the time. Yes, the 3G could record video and support voice control, but in keeping with their LONGGGG standing precedents, they will not release that as an update for the 3G.
And Apple KNOW that people will rush out and buy the iPhone, even though it doesnt have everything or isnt CAPABLE of everything, because Apple have done such a good job of marketing and making the design of the iPhone look good.
Apple obviously do this purposly, they could have EASILY put video camera capabilities on the FIRST iPhone, but Apple ARE cheeky. They make it easy for themselves to upgrade their next iPhone or other apple products. Right now, they probably have another 20 iPhone ideas on the drawing board because they CAN put soooo much more on their products.

I am coming from a first gen iphone 8gb so i believe the differences in performance and usability should be drastic in theory.

i'm having an annoying problem with iTunes. I can't download apps for my iPhone 3G as an error asks me to enable SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 in my internet options. Both are enabled yet i don't seem to get through. I've surfed the net for ages to find a solution to this problem and i can't find any which work. I can't run diagnostics either since it freezes. I really dunno what else to do. Im using Windows Vista and iTunes 8.2(the latest one whatever it is)

You have a lot of personal opinions. Regardless of what Apple did or will do, we are still all going to buy their product. Apple didn't have to tell us any specs at WWDC. They are not obligated too, just because we think of something doesn't mean Apple will do it. i just find it dumb that apple did not have the power to put these changes in their first phone. the technology is not NEW as such, it has been around for ages! well thats because the internal bits and pieces were just made by the companies, the new arm chip the new powervr chips came out only few months ago. also technology always leaves the older users in the dark, i mean thats how it is, if ur talking video. well then ye.lol. its a little silly, i mean i praise apple as they take there time to get every feature to work with FULL PERFORMANCE, thats why the take time, but video is something they should have worked on to get in the iPhone 3G. who knows.
It's not worth an upgrade for me, I will stick to my 16GB 3G with my contract totally expiring on a few months. I will wait for the next WWDC in 12 months time when they'll inevitably try to extort me yet again with a newer handset, and it will probably be a truer generational leap.

In canada... the iPhone 3G used to cost $199.00 CND for the 8Gb Modle now it cost $99.00 CND for tha iPhone 3G and 199.00 for the 16Gb iPhone. So there iss a decrease in price as well it is 16Gb and the same as teh 8Gb used to be

What they said was the body of the phone is the same but the hardware is different.
The ram has been doubled and the process has been upgraded also!!

your video was of relevance to the masses of uninformed individuals. I too have preoredered my iphone 3gS 16gb white and placed an order on a switcheasy capsule rebel arctic case. I am coming from a first gen iphone 8gb so i believe the differences in performance and usability should be drastic in theory.

i do agree with what your saying, but a think to the average consumer the 3Gs is not that tempting if you already have a 3G. to new customers and 1st gen iPhone customers its great. Im excited about the better hardware and the increased space. finally i can hold most of my music with the new 32, which means i can get everything down to one device.. the 3Gs is good, and i am definitely getting one :D

I wish they had a little distinction between the 3G and 3GS. I like the glossy case of the 3G and I know I wouldn't like a matte case better but at least a 3GS logo on the back would be nice.

I'm also getting the iPhone 3GS White 16gb.
I heard the back has a coat this time that the 3G didn't have to protect from scratches..
I'm hoping that's true because I don't want to use the iPhone with a case anymore, especially showing off that White finish.
What do you think about that?

hi, i really think u should take it to the apple store, because the problem really sounds confusing to me. u could restart or even restore your iphone 3g, but i wouldnt wait any longer, im surprised u waited this long.lol. but u should really check it out with apple !

hye!
i'm having an annoying problem with iTunes. I can't download apps for my iPhone 3G as an error asks me to enable SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 in my internet options. Both are enabled yet i don't seem to get through. I've surfed the net for ages to find a solution to this problem and i can't find any which work. I can't run diagnostics either since it freezes. I really dunno what else to do. Im using Windows Vista and iTunes 8.2(the latest one whatever it is)

Great video, I had to purchase the 3G in february after an accident with my old phone and was upset something super was being added. Now I can wait until next year, especially with the software update coming for us 3G users.

This is a Apple Marketing tool/ Stunt to Attract New Consumers and to get Current Users to Upgrade. When they dont have to, but 80% will or want to. Basically it is the same product with Minor Upgrades... Is there a BuyOUT price for 3GS? and HowMuch? Also is a Data Plan Manditory? It's definitely only worth it for iPhone owners- no 3G owners, unless you REEEEEALLY want speed and performance increase and a video camera... oh and if you don't know which way north is :P

ye this new iphone is for first gen owners, because its a ebtter phoen than the first gen, so those ppl have finished there contracts, 3g owners havent finished there contracsts, so this phone isnt for them, there phone will be better nxt year at wwdc 2010

if i had a 3g, i wouldnt get the 3gs, to me this new iphone is more for the ppl whos contracts are finished, so im talking about the first gen iphone users. because its end of contract for thoe guys, next year, ppl who have the iphoen 3g, there contract is over, so if i were in ur shoes, id wait till nxt year when ur contract is done. i have a feeling next year will be the big change ! apple have to, this year was good, but could be better.

You have a lot of personal opinions. Regardless of what Apple did or will do, we are still all going to buy their product. Apple didn't have to tell us any specs at WWDC. They are not obligated too, just because we think of something doesn't mean Apple will do it. Apple is so far above the power curve, doesn't matter what they'll do, they will never satisfy its consumers.

yes i do, i cant state fact, so its jus my view.lol. you say we, but if those specs werent updated, i would jus get the 3g. i will only get products i like, i wont just get apple stuff. i hate the ipod shuffle, so i will NEVER GET IT. they do satisfy customers, if u think of the way that, customers ask and apple never give, then ur right. but apple satisfy customers differently. 3G S would be awesome, but paying 400 some dollars for it is not worth it (in the middle of AT&T contract). Plus, I'd rather wait to see if the 2010 iPhone some to verizon :)

my 3g i paid £350 on pay and go BUT £30 and you dont get alot of txts and mins + i hate contracts because that meens i have to have it for 2yr no matter what so i dont think im going to upgrade maybe next year when the new i phone comes out (if there will be one ofter 3gs)

i just find it dumb that apple did not have the power to put these changes in their first phone. the technology is not NEW as such, it has been around for ages! I just find apple screwed over old customers by updating a phone which leaves the old phone customers up in the air.. OK I might be hating but to those who have the old iphone, what are your next steps now?

well thats because the internal bits and pieces were just made by the companies, the new arm chip the new powervr chips came out only few months ago. also technology always leaves the older users in the dark, i mean thats how it is, if ur talking video. well then ye.lol. its a little silly, i mean i praise apple as they take there time to get every feature to work with FULL PERFORMANCE, thats why the take time, but video is something they should have worked on to get in the iPhone 3G. who knows.

It's not worth an upgrade for me, I will stick to my 16GB 3G with my contract totally expiring on a few months. I will wait for the next WWDC in 12 months time when they'll inevitably try to extort me yet again with a newer handset, and it will probably be a truer generational leap.

ye i think for most 3g users, this iphoen 3gs is not really worth it, i mean if u havent finished ur contract, THATS A LOT OF MONEY UR SPENDING.lol. i think apple will HAVE TO change a lot next time around. but i have heard that apple are preparing an update to the iphone that is supposed to be pretty big ! and that to bring it out this wwdc was too hard, they still had more work to do, so possibly next wwdc !

In canada... the iPhone 3G used to cost $199.00 CND for the 8Gb Modle now it cost $99.00 CND for tha iPhone 3G and 199.00 for the 16Gb iPhone. So there iss a decrease in price as well it is 16Gb and the same as teh 8Gb used to be
