Read from the bottom up! cont. ...up. When it heats up, the alcohol will start to rise.Do not leave the "lava lamp" unattended. It's a model not the real thing. If the alcohol doesn't rise eventually to the top, you don't have enough salt in the water --the density needs to be increased by adding more salt. It's really fun to test the model

You can use a 4% salt solution for the surrounding liquid. The "oil" is benzyl alcohol colored with highlighter ink.

Sorry I just wrote the whole thing then deleted it because it was too long! Benzyl alcohol can be bought at a science supply store. Soak a highlighter (not water soluble) wick in it to color the benzly alcohol (fluorescent is best). This is the "glob". Use kosher salt in water for the surrounding liquid that heats up.and makes the glob rise and fall You have to make a 4% solution. That is saturated. For the heating element, use a metal can. open on one end and a hole cut out of the other. cont.

Sorry, for the bottle, I like a shape like a Perrier bottle but clear. So you will need to mount a light bulb into the metal can. I used a bulb holder from an optics lab...simple wood base with a lamp holder. Cut a hole in the remaining end of the can so the bottle will sit on it but not fall through. Leave about a one inch space in the top of the bottle when you are filling with salt water so that you can cap it very loosely (space for expanding air). Turn on the light and wait for it to heat

3. Colored Water (water+ food coloring)

4. Lamp with normal light bulb (not flourescent)

Get the large jar. Fill it mostly with mineral oil. Add colored water. Place the full jar on top of the turned-on lamp.

they use a mixture of Wax Vaseline and something els NOT JUST WAX and a mixture of water and a chemical and metal spring at the bottom and a 40watt light bulb on a coned base.. just better to go buy one for 15 -20 bucks then make one with oil water and a crappy light stand for just about the same price...
