Rats are not the root cause of bubonic plague... human sewage and FLEAS were the cause! rats are very clean animals and more sweet and affectionate than most of the commenters here seem to understand. Aww, they look so cute drinking the milk with their little eyes closed, even though it doesn't look too tasty. I keep two rats in my home, they are such sweet and loving creatures. These are the first rats I've ever had, but I love them so much that I think I'll always keep rats in my house from now on.

I live with 12 rescued pet rats. They eat whatever I `eat, they sleep in my bed, they only go in their cage when I leave the apartment. They are affectionate, intelligent, and sweet. How can any decent person have so much hatred and contempt for a small, innocent being that just wants to live its life?You say rats are gross? They aren't the ones who rape and torture each other for fun, start wars, enslave each other, and destroy the planet. Humans are disgusting.

Nothing is more abhorrent to me than racial prejudice. But as a cultural norm, this is pretty crazy, I'm sorry. Rats are vermin. I can't see how rats are inherently horrible creatures considering they're not intentionally aggressive, and don't mean us harm. The only horrible creature, really, are human beings.
A squirrel carries similar disease, can be a similar problem but somehow it isn't horrible. Ohh it's the tail, right? Pfft.

@Chocabloc84 I'm a fan of "Inglourious Basterds" also, one of my faves. But I watch squirrels in my yard every day. They're beautiful, playful little scamps that climb trees and chase each other. Rats are slithery, disease-ridden oily monsters that eat garbage and are most active at night. Perhaps it's not instinctive, my hate of rats. And it was wrong of me to judge another's culture. But rats are gross. I've never heard of any squirrel infestations, have you? They are nothing alike.

In fact they are a big problem in the UK for example because they drive out other native species from their nests and compete for their food sources. There's nothing "monstrous" about rats, a squirrel is basically a fucking rat with a fluffy tail. They do the same things as you describe FFS, sans the fluffy tail. So it's all about cuteness eh?
Yes, squirrel infestations exist. They are rodents, after all.

The "garbage" they eat is leftover food from messy humans, not their fault really... if anything it's a testament to their intelligence. Rats aren't really "oily" since they spend 1/3 of their entire time grooming themselves, by themselves they are actually *gasp* clean animals. It is only by virtue of their environment that they are dirty, the same can be said of ANY animal.

I don't know, I guess you're in the UK...where I live, Philadelphia..rats can be a real problem. Not my house personally, thank God. But you see them running in alleys, jumping in and out of trash bins. It's effin' gross. Squirrels, to me, represent nature, cuteness, parks..rats bring to mind poverty and filth. Squirrels are as much an introduced species as rats are... the only reason cuteness is there, I assume, is because of their fluffy tails. Well give a rat that and there wouldn't be much of a difference. Not to mention there are other species of rat that live in the bush, that don't involve bins and the like.

Yeah, that isn't an instinctive hatred. It's a cultural response. Wild rats? Yes, they are disease ridden. So are squirrels. So are most wild animals that inhabit urban areas. People are raised to hate rats, do to age old associations. And besides, you look bad on the plague and it's not even the rats to blame. It's the fleas. But yeah, as pointed out, it is all about the cuteness. Rat's aren't "cute" enough...Oh come on, google baby dumbo rats, and tell me they aren't cute.
