There are a lot of people like May's character in real-life: someone who really wants and needs something bad in life but can't have it but because they can't accept that, they start to go a bit mad and would do anything to get what they want.

In May's case, she wanted that baby of Dawn's specifically because her husband Rob is the biological father of the child so that'd make it feel more like hers when she'd know deep down that she isn't really.
