If you actually watch that fight the only thing BJ did was throw a punch that grazed and broke GSP's nose and accidentally poke him in the eye. After that, GSP just constantly took him down. Secondly, after losing to Serra, GSP has not lost a single round! That's like 7 or 8 fights against the top contenders! I think i would call that "Completely Dominating"

As a fighter myself, when I look at GSP. I see a true mixed martial artist. I know some people dislike GSP, because of all the hype, but he has tooken out legends. And the way he's ended his last few fights have been weak. With the exception of Sonnen which was impressive considering he had a broken rib and Sonnen was juiced up on steroids. I still say that Silva has yet to fight someone who pose a threat like someone on the level of GSP would.

Yes and no. I agree about the fact that the martial artist is important but some martial arts have better techniques than others. Don't tell me that Taekwondo techniques are good as Japanese Jiujitsu techniques, or that Capoeira is more effective than muay thai. A fighter will use techniques he learned in his martial art, if he learned bad or stupid techniques he will not be a good fighter.

A skilled Taekwon do or Capoeria fighter who has trained for fighting has the potential to beat a Jujutsu, muay Thai fighter if he lacks the heart to fight, or is slower, weaker, less intelligent, etc. There are many variables other than pure technique. When you get right down to it, there are only so many ways to punch, kick, or grapple. I do agree that there are some TERRIBLE techniques, albeit uncommon. But you do make a good point.

But the terrible techniques I was referring to are the ones taught in what are commonly called "mcdojos" or black belt mills, which in fact are a major reason so many people see karate as ineffective. But a true martial artist will be able to seperate practicality from filler, as you said. Thank you for your insight.

GSP has indeed beat Penn twice, but Penn stepped up a whole weight class both times. GSP has never fought outside of 170. Penn has fought as high as MW and HW just to challenge himself. The combination of the violent Serra loss and the fact that he has so many buisness contracts (NIke, Gatorade) has made him a safety first "fighter". He'll go for the finish if it presents itself on a silver platter, but he's not actively searching for it. He's just looking to win and take as little damage as possible.
