  • now make a 3d printer

  • that formation looked like a ravine on the 3d chart, dude thats too cool!

  • So in theory, you could take an object... like a rock. And it will make a complete lego blueprint for it... awesome.

  • you can make just about anything with legos..or pretty damn near anything.

  • Really amazing.

  • Do you use color sensor?

  • @NEOCUBEST thats what i want to know..

  • that machine acts like the robot near the elevator at WALL-E the movie

  • legos......dungeons and dragons...whatever

  • Thanks for the hint in the video that the scanning part goes until 3:20 so that it can be skipped easily :)

cool idea; would it be accurate enough also with flat lego pieces (1/3 of the height of normal bricks), without slowing the scanning process down?

  • when you say "so it can be used in other programs." what other programs did you mean? did you have to make the 3d mapping program for your course?

  • Are u a studen to a certain university? Where if yes?

  • @esgol1 Yes, Case Western Reserve University. This project was made before I went there though.

  • can you make a how to make video

  • @jeras97 Sorry, this was from 2007, long since taken apart.

  • pretty cool I must say!

  • doesn't it go faster?

  • @doemaeries No, unfortunately beyond that speed the servos lose accuracy

  • robot is god but video is booring

  • nice a heightmap!

    nice for 3d modeling.

  • dude good scanner but retarded app u need to get one that puts the lvls in to blocks

  • Lol at 3d graph....

That proves that Excel sorta.... well.... lol.

It never worker for me. :P

  • dang WMG they took your sound away...

  • machine is pretty cool though!

  • Can you post the programing instructions here or give me a website to program it?

  • you can improve it with speed and presition with the sonic sensor...

  • now if you attach a color sensor to the end of the probe...

  • that's brilliant! I like ur idea on that!

    Nice work! 5/5* ;D

  • would you be so kind to put somewhere the .rbt program pls?

  • so it saves how deep and how high it is? can it compare two different saves?

  • LDD INSTRUCTIONS NOW!!! NXT-G (or any other nxt programming language) FILE NOW!!! I WANT THIS SUPER AWESOME THING NOW!!!!!!!!!!

  • @TheMacDudeGuy I always knew mac people were pushy and childish...

  • nice

  • nice use of legos and LoTR soundtrack

  • sweet! That is one of the coolest things you can do with the NXT!

  • so it is kinda like a blind man feeling around to get an idea were he is. cool.

  • awesome! but how did you input the data into excel as a 3D Graph?

  • very impressive! how do you make the probe move on all three axis? i can never make my robots do that!

    thanx!

  • podras mejorarlo si colores de los legos representaran su altura

  • Cute! But why not represent it using an isometric angle?

  • Wow! That's amazing! 5 stars!

  • incredibl3!!!!!!!!!!

  • next you should make a robot that can recreate the scanned structure. Maybe include a colour scanner for more exactness. This is great but that would be awsome.

  • Wow...

when the video ended I sat frozen in shock.

then I thought of how it worked and I think I know how

  • Muy bueno ! Gracias , desde argentina .

  • Nice.

  • Cool so you can scan you hand :D

  • cool

  • this is so cool. i cant say how much i like it!

  • Cool!!

  • what is the name of the music you used?

  • The song is "The Bridge of Khazad Dum" from the "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" soundtrack album.

  • that is very good and useful

  • everything is cool about it except it takes too long..l

    five stars!!!

  • If he didn't use NXT-G, then this is bad programming.. Why the lag, when the pin goes down?

Maybe. Move for 100/1000 of a sec. stop, check if sensor is pressed, and so on...

Why not just. Move until sensor is pressed?

    PS: No offense...

  • Possibly to accurately record how many bricks tall each tower is.

  • Rotation sensor.

  • u do that all on your own or internet guided studies cuz that was impresive

i have and nxt and i can control it with my wiimote

  • i control my computer with my wiimote

  • smart ass, thats just lazyness, lol, mind u though i cant really speak!

    P.S. Cool robot, worth building.

  • wow, I was thinking Lord of The Rings while watching. LOTRO can now be recreated with legos!

  • can you get us the blueprint of this?

  • Yes, but here you have only a 2d scanner - because the surface is checked only from the top. And to make it really 3d scanner, thees blocks should be checked also from the sides.

And also it looks, that the speed of scanning depends of how the blocks are toll and it doesn't look nice.

    Anyway it's a very cool stuff :)

  • Each point the system records is a 3-dimensional vector so it is a 3D scanner. In robotics, a cartesian machine that is able to approach the workpiece from the sides as well as the top is often refered to as a 5-axis machine, as you have X,Y,Z and two rotational axes usually enumerated RX and RY.

  • this is really cool. its the same concept of the first scanning electron microscopes. I've seen one made at a college's science fair type thing. (but not with legos, it was making an image of actual electrons. i think he scanned a razor blades edge to show it wasnt straight)

  • One of the coolest ones out there! Wonderful job!

  • oooeeeh coooool

  • nice work, pretty intense programming with data log and graph generation, did you use nxt-g or JAVA? and is the plot done in real time or do you analyze the data afterwards? .. oh wait you answered that question in your description :-)

  • Awsome

  • cooool

  • i dont care what anyone else says, this must have taken ages and it cant have been easy, well done!

  • To easyjair1

    Noob

    To Matt90o

    You shold eat cookes!

    And from me

One of the best i ever seen!

  • To KnucklesMacGadget

    Have you mindstorms?

    I guess not.

you dont no how diffical it is to make a scanner!

    To ibon1994

You dont understand so shut up!

  • it is is one of the most complex lego machines ever why say it sucks?????

  • Was that to be or the "Understanding" commentors?

  • sorry if Im hurting your feelings, but what is the purpose of this machine?

  • couldnt u just have used the ultrasonic sensor.

  • Not sensitive enough buddy. ;)

There are other sensors from third parties which are much more sensitive, but it would be hard to use it to detect such a small area (approx 1cm by 1cm).

  • true

  • just because you can't think of anything good to do with it doesn't mean you should say that about this machine. this is one of the coolest NXT devices i have seen yet.

  • Man dude this thing is amazing you must spend some serious time programming this awsome stuff!! And that takes some serious patients.

  • nice !!!

  • I would've been more impressed if it was able to scan a design and then build an exact replica of it.

  • same but still its very impressive

  • itd be even sweeter if it could port into 3dsmax.

  • That is awsome!

  • noob

  • now that I could use, if only I had the lego mindstorm, I would rule the world, muhahahaha, five stars, useful!

  • wow cool

  • you should have it build a replica, like a 3d copier, rather than just a scanner

  • BUZZ LIGHTYEAR song haha i love that show

  • if you double chek the blocs arent pointed, like you see on the screen

you should prefect it so that the blocs look like blocs

  • lol kool u used an nxt, where do u buy those things anyway?

  • like at toyrus

  • i dont quite think they have those at toys r us i think there a little spendy but iw ould just ordr it onlline directly from lego

  • ya thay do i saw it like 3day ago

  • very clever! would've taken me forever to even come up with

  • waka waka waka!

  • no offense but it is kind of pointless...

  • I not geting dizzy... its just an image on the computer screen...

Wow... it acctuly takes the blocks and changes them in to data... but why is it all

7's, 8's, and 9's... what would happen if you put it at an edge of a stari case going down.. what would happen would it read inconclusive or someting...

  • dubyoo tee ef?

    lotor

  • if is this wasting the time, what is than not wasting the time?!

  • That's like saying an artist scribbling and sketching is a waste of time, or a writer keeping a journal is a waste of time...

He's going to be a good engineer if he isn't already. This model would make a decent science project...

  • but it has no use sure u can use for heights of blocks... or u could get off ur lazy ass and do it urself!

  • It's about the challenge to build such a machine, not for a real-life purpose. Who's gonna sort his bubblegum with a machine made out of lego? I don't give a f*** if I eat a blue or red candy it's pointless as well! But it's about the challenge to build the machine.

  • finally someone understands!

  • Now one that can use that data to build it. But that would be kinda hard. =P

  • what else can it scan?

  • great music :)

  • Cool, but what is it good for lol?

  • To prove that it can be done.

  • best answer ever!! lol! thats the way inventions are made! very good machine btw

  • takes a bt 2 long but still cool

  • Design experience. It functions similar to sonar, but with legos instead of sound waves...

It measures how far the legos/sound travels downward as uses that to create a topographical map...

  • AWESOME !!!

  • that is so totally amazing... i want one!

  • very cool creation.

  • wow the lord of the rings song just MAKES this man this is so cool

  • what's the name of the song?

  • It's from the Fellowship of the Ring soundtrack. I think it's track #13, "The Bridge of Khazad-dûm". ;-)

  • thx :)

  • What is this music? And this video is awsome!!

  • Music from Lord of the Rings composed by Howard Shore.

  • LOL... the music.

  • The music fits perfectly.

  • buuuuuu

  • whoa... THATS PRETTY COOL

  • What would be even better, is if you got it to actually build a replica of the scanned object.

  • true. SO you could export the meshes to 3dsmax or maya or C4D.

    But.. its LEGO..

  • Thats awesome :) I want to get one of these, I'm just watching all the youtube videos :).

  • Right with ya.(don't have the money)

  • Well done, nothing like raw ingenuity!!

btw. it's a probe not a scanner. A probe measures via contact and a scanner uses non-contact (remote sensing) measuring such as laser or video/photography.

  • The machine is a scanner because it creates a digital representation of the Lego pattern using a series of discrete measurements. It uses a probe to collect data, although that does not mean that the machine itself is a probe.

  • hmm use full but u need better equipments

  • please be quiet-this is a great effort with freakin LEGOS!

  • cool

  • Awesome project. Did you design the code?

  • Yes, I designed the code for the scanner and the java applet.

  • hey i have an idea that might speed that up but u will need to send me the program and i need you to give me some info about how u got the 3D effect. accept and i will ive my email to send.
