I know you mac people are totally going to shoot down this comment but the xservers were taken off cause they were really unpopular in data centers and people hated using them because they overheated like crazy. and even then, apples server os is really not that great so most xservers i have ever seen ran windows server anyway.
thank god apple needs to stick to there over priced, yuppy tech, and leave the real down and dirty nerd shit to linux and microsoft. its not that the it pros wanted xserve and there bosses didn'tboth didn't want to pay 15 grand for a single server when they can buy a server that will out class it for 15 hundred. DIE APPLE DIE
"We want people to decide for themselves!" - Steve Jobs
Considering that there are about 1000 computers that are more innovative and advanced than Macs, I still don't think people decide for themselves when they say "Macs are high-tech"
@4izm0v ok maybe I exaggerated with over 1000, but let's be honest here. PC hardware can range from a small netbook to a powerful desktop setup designed for development, networked business solutions, and, yes, gaming. They feature cool tools like fingerprint readers, facial recognition cameras, blu-ray players, etc. They come in multiple colors and designs (that's being unique, apple hipsters!). They will soon be able to boot up in 8 seconds or less. Windows itself is powerful
@TheWinMacLinTechie Why not look at it from another view. In the world of PCs there are all the machines you listed, with the addition of Macs, rather than separating them into 2 separate camps. If I want a small netbook just for checking email and browsing the web I get that, if I want a cheap desktop solution for filling an office I get windows machines, if I want to develop iPhone apps or edit video in OSX I get a powerful Mac, if I want an ultraportable I get a MacBook Air etc.
I honestly dont believe that Apple's server farms are built of Server MacPro versions instead of slim 1U xserves. They dont want to sell any as they need xserves themselves. Apple is growing so quickly that soon they will become their biggest server consignee.
@Machead91 Yes, except that the Mac Mini Server is too slow and not redundant enough to power the enterprise, while the Mac Pro Server is too big to fit in a 42U Cabinet without taking an angle grinder to it. (Warning: This voids Apple's Warranty)
What happens when apple mets the real world it fails the xserver series sucks its shiny don't get me wrong & glossy but it sucks what was apple aiming white this buy our overpriced 2 year old tech 0% compatibly they must have confused corporate it guys white mac fans that get attracted by shinny things.
@Machead91 said "they didn't ditch enterprise customers. They have Mac pro and mac mini server."
mini server is a home product (if you can't find use for a home server you are not qualified to comment), the mac pro is just a average desktop computer for peoples that do more then just checking mail. It is no more 'enterprise' then the imac is.
@WeAreTwoDoorsDown as can you see with Mac Os 10.8 , Macbook and İmac's turn a mobile devices. They try to use iOs in every Apple product. Mac Os and other Apple's OS transform to iOs .. They don't try to be unix, they don't need to be windows.
They want to be education's, home users', graphic and design's lover's company. And they walk at this way... Its simple.
@macprorocks said "If they want to make mobile devices, they need to support the cloud with servers."
The 'could' run on Linux anyway. Consumer can access their vanity farcebook site and pornography trough limited apple OS. It is less trouble that way, for us, that do the real work using real computer.
@SlightyDisturbedNBK Yes... but when you pay for an Apple product there is money set aside for the services. So, you can't go on your Windows 7 Computer, or iCloud's website and sign up for it. But, it is better than MobileMe, but with that service you would not need any Apple products to use it.
@Machead91 you dont even know, do you. Mac Pro- Cant stack them, big, bulky. Mac mini- not powerful enough, no fiber channel support. Both- no hot swappable HDD's or PSU's.
@videoproducer100 A little correction there: xserve was meant for a certain level of enterpirse market, meanwhile mac pro and mini servers are made strictly for the SOHO segment.
@videoproducer100 But the market segment they aimed doesn't need a rack-mount mate, and enterprises using their blade servers doesn't need a low performance machine as the mac pro (by their standards obviously, it is more than enough to serve a mid volume SOHO).
HP, DELL, CISCO and such companies are doing this way better and cheaper than Apple does (& they are quite good in it, unlike on the pre-assembled consumer PC market xD)
I'm pretty sure that everyone is wanting to head to a massive cloud interface. Although this means faster internet will be required. It's a thought, and may be true within the next ten years.
The real reason Apple discontinued the XServ is because there was no way it was going to really have an inpact in the enterprise market (server wise). They would have to go up against companies like HP and Dell who dominate the market for servers. Also the XServ is/was a waste of money. The money you would spend on a basic Xserv you could buty a beefy HP Proliant G5 for a lot less.
this is nuts! Apple thinks they can just stop serving existing enterprise customers. It doesnt matter how many people buy the product unless they are so low that they get almost nothing out of it. I really don't know wether Apple is getting at least a little bit out of it or not, but they can't just ditch it because they say to everyone in a conference and have meetings about it. It's like taking away the iphone because some other company beat them at selling a smartphone.
If they really wanted to make a server OS, then get Darwin, put in a nice way of installing software, and write a bunch of good server apps for web, ftp, ssh, mail, dns, and print. oh wait, UNIX and LINUX already have this stuff!
Wow - enterprise customers are confused? I think Steve needs someone to bring him back to reality. That's nuts. So, according to Jobs, business customers can't decide what they want. Wrong. Business customers have to change so their customers continue to get better service and products at more affordable prices - sound familiar? That means B2B demands fast and sustained upgrades - something Apple can't seem to do. The reality is that they can't keep up with market demands.
He is right. In an extremely large corporation the people who approve large scale purchases do not even understand what they are buying. You would be hard pressed to find a CTO who understands every facet of Enterprise I.T. if they do they are usually so busy they must delegate some decisions to someone who will play it safe because after all you can't just return the 20 Exchange servers you just bought when you find out the new servers work poorly with the NAS bought last year.
@OfSongMind I agree to a point. Bottom lne is Apple could not dominate the corporate IT market like they do the consumer because a) The XServ is shite for what you pay for, b) Why buy an Apple server to run Windows (you aint gonna use Apples server OS). Makes me laugh though, Jobs'makes reference to lack of choice inthe enterpise market, how many people get to choose what machines they want at Apple? And no I'm not a fanboy of Windows or whatever, I aint a nerd...I just know my shit
The bottom line here seems to me that Apple simply doesn't care about the enterprise market. Jobs's only interest is in delighting individuals. I don't deny that chasing such a goal has led Apple to immense profitability and popularity -Apple is doing very well indeed- but the fact is they just don't care. They don't want those sales. They don't want to serve the enterprise. End of story.
I knew he was sick, but god he looked like shit!
