I love this song but I just realized that if he had done the keyboard break in The Venture's/ Dick Dale surf style it would have been incredible! The rest of the song would have totally taken off into a huge climax! I do think he was one of the great geniuses of the 60's, like Roy Orbison and Gene Pitney. Maybe he didn't move around enough... anyone know why he committed suicide?
my father hung around with del shannon the song "hats off to larry" was orignally "hats off to gary" del shannon changed it from "gary" to "larry" for my father
I work with a guitar player that used to work with Del Shannon. He has nothing short of the ultimate respect for him as a musician ,a band leader, a writer and a Man. And a gig never goes by where he does not pay tribute to the genius and I believe perhaps his mentor ,Mr. Dell Shannon. May he rest in peace.

This song and Runaway have almost identical arrangements, with the clavioline coming in for a solo break and then continuing for the rest of the song. I actually prefer this to Runaway.
R.I.P. Del this is rap artist Eazy O.I grew up in the 80s , and listen to Del Shannon on cbs fm 101 out of NY.runaway , + hats of to larry = great music .We got love 4 u Del.Your missed...
To me Del Shannon was brilliant - encapcillating the sound of the early sixties just before the Beatles hit the scene. His songs sound as fresh today as they did then.
Del is wonderful. Youtube search DISCO 45 and VIVA EL ROCK AND ROLL (Manuel Vargas) and you will see an honoring to this one and others singers and songs of these years.
He was soooo much fun. We partied after the gig. He bought all the beer. Then Del and Ron Rathman our friend/manager went into the bathroom and smoked some weed. I was with a band called "The Intended".
I think it was 1967. We had a strobe light and we partied in the motel.
I was with a girl called Anne Tileman, I will never forget. I wonder where she is, Anne are you there?
Dell Shannon helped me grow with appreciation for music show as his. God Bless the two you you. Do you know any history of his songs - particularly "Little Town Flirt", which I played until the grooves wore down, and to this day, I've NEVER heard an organ like the one his band used!
I saw Del shortly before he killed himself. Performed in G.R.,MI near his Coopersville, MI home. Little Town Flirt written about a girl Del knew in Allendale, MI. She hung out in bar where he did. Del told story at revival (Del/Leslie Gore/Freddie Cannon/Bobby Lewis/Crystals/Lou Christie)that night. The Beatles were his opening act in the early 60's when he toured Europe. Del was number one vocalist in 60's. He was great the night I saw him and forever. We still celebrate Del here in West MI!
wow! killer version. Del was always on. Great writer, great rhythm guitarist a real Big Talent. Anybody out there know where this clip is from and what year and who backed him on this? It looks like a late 70's thing from maybe England. Any Help?
My uncle used to play this and other shannon songs when I was a kid. I'm 41 now and hearing itbrings back great memories from that time in the early seventies
Jody passed away on June 6th, 2004...I believe she had some type of cancer.
Shirley (Nash) Westover (Jody's mom) is living and was present at the making of the 'So Long Baby' video in Coopersville, Michigan. She has close ties to Joe G and the Zippity Doo Wop Band along with Max Crook (Del's keyboard man) (they cover Del's music). She strongly prefers not to be called Del's ex-wife.
Thanks for the update. I haven't seen Shirly since Charles passed away. He and I were soul friends, and I attended his wedding in 87. I miss him so !!! He never got over Shirly, she really was his " One'
I met a woman recently who is married to a musician....she knows Del/Charles' sister quite well.....she is the one who related that Shirly dislikes being called his ex-wife. My mom went to school with Del/Charles and my stepdad had worked with him briefly in the early 50s.
I like the part wher it goes, "Her name, it doesn't matter." I don't think I ever heard that in a song before. It kind of weird and crazy if you think about it. I'll bet this song is baseed on a true story. Anyway, next to Runaway, this is a great Del Shannon song.
No doubt the greatest, he was loved here in Australia, a great video exists of his concert down underm morphs Satisfaction into Pretty Woman so easily.
Thanks for this upload of the legendary Del Shannon. I remember reading way back when he was going to be a Traveling Wilbury after 'The Big O' passed & I was looking forward to that. Then I remember reading sadly of his suicide. RIP Del - The world misses you.
Poor old Del Shannon. He was aksed to join the Wilburys after Orbison passed away, but chose instead to commit suicide. PS: What's with the Disneyland guest countdown board?
