  • Kim Wilde´s mother was one of Vernons Girls, who appeared with the likes of Cliff Richard, and made own records and performances, too;

  • i personally prefer the version on "around the beatles" which mixes in this with Long John Baldrys "movin on"

  • Thanks for this! Does anybody have the Vernons Girls version of Loco-Motion ?

  • First time I heard this, I loved it immediately. The Vernons Girls are awesome!!!!

  • @Shteve67 Lennon was banging the lead singer

  • @TheKenfig Charming turn of phrase you have. You must charm all the girls with your eloquence and wit.

  • @anya933 How did you know anya ?. It IS true though ; I just finished the LENNON the life biography written by Philip Norman. Brilliant book, 800 pages but difficult to put down once you start it

  • francis lee is my great auntie! so proud of her!!

  • @RachieLooLovesYou

Fran was my tap teacher for many years. She was such fun and a great dancer! Good times :)

  • Written by Billy "i can help" Swan in 1962

  • Brilliant, bouncing piece of music. B-side's really good too!

  • Didn't the Ladybirds (the famously stand-completely-still singers on the Benny Hill Show) evolve out of the Vernons Girls, too?

  • Such clear diction! like Maureen Evans, Ta for putting this up and off a record, too.

  • saw the vernons girls at a pop package show in the 90s at grand theatre wolverhampton. enjoyed the show they were great. after the show i spotted maggie stredder in the foyer. i went up to her and told her how much id enjoyed the show and could i please have her autograph, she said yes i could buy a signed photo of her or pay a fee for her to sign my programme. i refused. and she lost herself a fan.

  • @davidwalsh66 You should have taken her glasses off, chucked them on the floor and stamped on them..

    That would have shown her.

Joe brown is like that, a mate of mine tried to get his autograph and was told "i dont get paid to sign autographs me old mucker"and waltzed off humming what a crazy world to himself:)

  • Does anyone remember them in a early 60's film called "Just for fun" ? they were in it, along with other famous British singers att hat time. Great memories!

  • I liked this track when I was a kid. In the late 80s when I lived in England i got taken to a Sunday afternoon gay disco somewhere in London where they played this track every week in amongst all the latest disco stuff, it's a really good bop. Trust me,--- try it!

  • @1lordthorpe lily savage/p o grady used to do this in his act then.. it may have been him,!

  • @rhylmark No it wasn't Lily Savage, there was no floor show, they just played the track and everyone danced. Apparently the track was played every week, Maybe the D.J. was hoping to make it a hit bit like the D.J. somwhere who used to play Nina Simone "My baby just cares for me" in the late 80s, and when it was was re-released it eventually became a big hit 30 something years after she recorded it. Maybe he just played it because it's a great track and he liked it, everyone else did!

  • @1lordthorpe Did you have fun at the Homosexual disco whatever that is

  • @kevinturvy Yes, of course I did! It was a warm day the crowd was having a party. I was with a really cute man and his son, we had a ball and we probably had really good sex when we got home!

  • @1lordthorpe No need to go into details:)

    I get the picture

  • That is just really, really weird. And kind of great.

  • love all this stuff from late 50's early 60's, some of it still stands up well but this one sounds a bit dated now, at the time these girls were great, or in modern language they were cool at the time. Thanks for posting this up.

  • one of these girls is the mother of Kim Wilde

  • @alwaysthesun do you know which one in the picture is Kim's mother?

  • EXCELLENT! many thanks for posting!

  • have you got the Locomotion by these?

  • The Marvelettes did this as a fuller on thier album "Sing hits of 1962". Did a good job too.

  • you would'nt happen to have THE AVONS "WERE ONLY YOUNG ONCE " in your collection

  • a lot of people claim to have nans, aunts etc who were in the band, they dont realise that there were 16 or 17 original members over there time together and another 2 or 3 stand ins... but the tv showa and recordings only used about 5 of the girls...

  • Go on Jimmy, play the flipside. You know you want to. Please!

  • please do post the flipside....OOh wack you know what I mean....Boys are natural twisters..or something..brilliant...

  • These girls were cool in their day.

Margaret Stredder was the one that the lads honed in on. She was the one who wore the large glasses. The old saying that :

    Boys don't nmake passes

    At girls with glasses

    was proven wrong with Margaret

  • @damoil She also went onto join The Ladybirds who are best remembered as the backing singers on The Benny Hill Show. They also did backing vocals on Top of the Pops and The Two Ronnies to name a few.

  • Maureen and the vernon girls,I was going with a girl called maureen at the time.Oh no stories not too long, about a love that went all wrong....

  • my nan was in the vernon girls. she is in one of the photos you have on there, she left in 1958 when she was expecting my dad!

  • My Grandpa used to drive the vernon girls to all their gigs.

  • Great to hear this but what about the funny flip side? Any chance you could post it?

  • Too 'butch' for their own good! :o\

  • Great early stuff Jim

  • This is great. You are out of your mind. Listen to the original by Clyde McPhatter That's great..
