Question: have you tried it with IRC, and how does it work with that? I was going to root it to use AndroIRC on it or somethin'. E-Ink+reading IRC = niceness.
Hello, I got a question, ¿can you connect a USB generic keyboard to the Nook? You should use a USB OTG adapter cord (miniUSB to female host USB) or something like that. If you have the elements, can you try if it works? Thanks!
@BrysonKlipfel Not that stupid actually. If you want a colour tablet, then sure, get a colour tablet. What if you want an ereader that doesn't hurt your eyes after a few hours and need charging every day? If you can find a good reason not to turn a Nook Touch into an Android Tablet, I'd understand, but you can't, can you?
Love the review, but not a single mention of how this device performs with various ebook apps for android. How good is the pdf support? How is the landscape mode? Panning/scrolling possible? Off course I know the Nook doesn't natively support such features.
@ibex333 Mainly because I wanted to showcase how the Nook 2 functioned as an e-ink Android device outside of the e-reader aspect, but I mostly stuck to what I personally use and knew worked.
The Nook user Zonyl covers the Amazon Kindle App in a video he made here:
goo.gl
/
dUV6Z
You may also find it in the right hand column of your screen as "Kindle on the Nook 2nd Edition Touch (E-Ink)"
The default pdf function works, but it's pretty default. Other pdf apps work flawlessly.
@ibex333 (Oh the redudancy of me describing the default pdf function as "default," meant basic.) "Flawlessly" does not include button support.
Landscape has to be forced onto the device. I've yet to find an application that does this at the flick of a button. ADW launcher has a landscape feature, which works without a hitch. But it feels a little awkward for everything but typing.
Panning and scrolling on the homescreen is possible, but it looks like poop. I avoid screen refreshing at all cost.
I heard there is a reader called EasyPDF or something like that. I could have the name completely wrong... I am interested if apps like that will enable easy landscape mode and panning/scrolling. Is there a chance you could try some computer book like "Java for Dummies" or "Idiots guide to Photoshop" or whatever with images and graphs? Again, I know it will not fit inside the screen, but I am wondering if you can pan to different parts of the page and how well that will work.
@ibex333 Is it bad that I have both the pdf's you suggested? Haha.
Okay, third party PDF Readers.
Adobe Reader: Has 3 reader modes, only "Reflow Text" worked without crashing the app. Loads images, buttons don't work. Loads next page on swipe, no scrolling or lag. <(GOOD) Double click to zoom works, three levels of zoom, can't zoom on images. I was fairly happy with it.
Documents To Go: PDF to Go: YUCK! Could only "scroll" pages vertically. You can rotate the pages, looks even worse.
@ibex333 D2G PDF2G Continued: You zoom the images, but that's about the only plus. This was made for LCD screens. Terrible on E-ink.
ezPDF-Reader: Works, tons of options and that's the problem. There's a lot to this app which is its down fall. On e-ink, the simpler, the better. I had a lot of graphic and formatting problems and the complexity of the app makes it very annoying to tweak on e-ink. It might have an "optimum" setting for the Nook, but heck if I can find it.
Thanks! I believe there was another great reader app that everyone loved on nook color. No reason why it wouldn't work on the STR (I think). Once I find it I will let you know. Unfortunately work week started, so lack of time... But I'll do my best.
@ibex333 Yup, just let me know. Yeah, hear you on that. I only have free time because I'm in-between summer and fall semester and work limited hours on request.
I'm going on vacation on Friday, so if I don't respond till August 9th+, it's because I'm out of the country.
Please contact me when you get back from vacation. I am trying to root my recently bought Nook STR but I am stuck at the step where they want you to use ADB. The guide is simple up to this point.
@sueryun Mount your Nook to your computer and create a folder at the directory /media/screensavers, put your jpeg and png photos in there.
Again, make sure to put the pictures in a folder, individual pictures will not work. Then, go to change your screensaver options in the Nook's "Settings/Screensaver" menu and the screensaver should appear under the drop down as the name of the folder.
How about the PDF reading function, does it work as nice as the operamini ? More over, Can I change to stock dict with sth like Oxford and use it while reading?
@lstarterl1 I have the documents2go PDF reader, which works just fine. Just have to keep in mind, that anything but the stock apps will refresh the screen every page or screen transition, so the default PDF reader would run the best, but it won't have as many functions as other PDF readers out there.
And no, you cannot change the dictionary, that functions built into the OS by B&N.
@sueryun Only stupid questions are those not asked. ;)
No, you do not. Applications that don't send and receive data, such as single player games, require no internet connection (Such as WiFi) - Even applications that need internet, like Pulse, will still launch without WiFi, but won't have any updated content or won't have functional content.
Android apps require no data authorization unless specified by the author. To answer your question, yes, you can play Angry Birds without WiFi.
I tried the swype.apk on my evo on my rooted nook2, but it wasn't recognized using color tools. Where can I get a swype apk that works with nook2-root? thx!
@Tyclo Thanls Tyclo. I did use adb push after adb shell mouint and chmod to ensure the permissions were RW. And I ensured swype.apk is in /system/app using root explorer. The color tools keyboard chooser also shows Swype. But even when selected, Swype doesn't work/pop up when I go to enter text. I think what I need is a proper Swype.apk that is compatible with the nook2. thanks!
@JesusSmithExmo Alright, cool. Was just about to forward you a link.
It works, but I hate the button flashes. If only there was a way to remove the animations. I tried, but it's written into the xml data of the app. If only there was a source code. :/
@Tyclo Does your version of Swype allow for the popup word selection? The one I found (named above) doesn't show the word list popup on the nook2 for some reason. thanks
@EggSoup76 That's what I figured as well, I went over it with zonyl, the guy who made the video which shows the bluetooth option (and ADW) on the nook2 (Which was showcased on CrunchGear) and we've both called it inconclusive. TechCrunch pretty much extrapolated that bluetooth update message in the video and ran with it.
We assume that it does have bluetooth, because it's the same board as the Nook Color, which does have bluetooth. But I totally agree with you and the music app.
@xiicokr Very welcome. I haven't stopped loving this thing yet.
Make sure to check out the XDA forums. (links in the video description) We're hiding out in the Nook Color Android Development forums cooking up new ideas for the Nook2. There's tons of information on the device there.
@iRajiv I'll see what I can do this weekend. I've got a list of things that I need to test on my nook and I'll make sure to try out those apps as well :)

@BrysonKlipfel The point is you can accomplish all of these things on such a simple device. So it's actually quite genius.

patoloco1000 7 months ago
@patoloco1000 You can download it here:
goo.gl
/oigb
and install it on your Nook. Copy and paste the link into your URL bar. (Stupid YouTube link blocker)
Or you can download it from the Android Marketplace if you have Gapps installed or did AutoNooter.

JesusSmithExmo 8 months ago
@JesusSmithExmo You need to adb the apk to /system/app
So, you would connect to your nook and "push swype.apk /system/app"
Of course, no quotes and it would be the directory to the Swype.apk
You're also going to have to make the directory writeable. Full directions can be found here: nookdevs.com/NookColor_Replace_the_Default_Keyboard
