Right, its not that Pete was better than Ringo, or vice versa - o rthat George is better or not as good as ?? Does it really matter? I suspect that were John still with us, he would get a larf from the whole thing. Pete is a different percussionist than Ringo - Both are great - remember - no two musicians, just like two people in any artistic endeavor can ever be just the same - everyone is an individual and everyone is different - that is what makes it so wonderful
It just kills me all the music critics on board..Ringo's this, Pete's that. George's solo sounds is this and that...You know what - they were kids with no formal training, no great sounds systems...etc, etc. They pretty much taught themselves to play and created a new sound in the process. So let's stop wandering is Ringo was the better drummer..comparing George to other lead guitarists..because they set the standard for ALL bands to follow.
you have to realize they were using a shit sound system (actually no system) in the most primitive circumstances imaginable. You are witnessing an evolutionary process
The posted video, "40 years of history in 3 minutes" is a Beatles celebration with performance of GET BACK and GLASS ONION while re-visiting key moments in history. Enjoy.
This song's a raw, bonafide rocker but there's something about the vocals that doesn't quite add up to the fab 4. A little whoop just before George busts into his rockabilly (thank you very much carl perkins) solo that could be Paul but the rest of the song's vocals sound like imposters. Could it be Pete Best on vocals? Or, could it be that the lads had tired pipes near the end of a grueling night of hard rocking and fever pitched sets? Oh, but to have been a fly on the Cavern wall !!
@novadrian There are two outtakes on the Anthology: 1 where Paul stops because he is having trouble with the Bass; and the 2nd where John starts singing at the wrong time after the solo. Then there is the full 63' version.
Well, I'm a teenager, and I have a four piece band, analog, uneffected amps and guitars, clean sounds, no effects WHATSOEVER, live raw performance AND we write our own Rock 'n' roll songs, so not all is lost, and we got the biggest round of applause of all the acts at a variety concert t'other night.
Recently ran across a website that says Ringo's voice can be heard on these rehearsal tapes, between songs. So that definitely places them in the fall, after Ringo was hired.
This is Ringo. The only tapes with Pete are the Decca auditions, a couple of songs on Tony Sheridan's album, and the June '62 EMI audition of Love Me Do.
PAUL FINALLY PLAYED THIS LIVE! One After 909 - Paul McCartney ( Live At The Apollo Theater 12-13-2010) broadcast on Sirius XM Radio and can be seen on youtube!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Gyphia plus, apparently john lennon was real self concsious about his voice for some odd reason, so everything from rubber soul to sgt peppers, he completely souped up his voice with reverb, chorus, and all kinds of other shit
Why haven't I heard this before??? This is fantastic. Why didn't they realease this on the Anthology albums?? There is still ton of "officialy" unreleased Beatles material. The Anthologies could easily have several more releases. Come on EMI. Get off your @sses.
Today i heard this very early version the first time. I am so glad to hear it. Young Beatles were so raw. I cannot say what is better, 1960 or 1970 version.
I'm thinking im shit at guitar cause i cant do well.....but they had 11 years to practice before they became famous! so ill keep trying my best........BEATLES RULE!!
Playing with the title Get Back I have always thought that the band wanted to retrieve this sound in 1969. I mean maybe. Could it be the reason too why the band dug up this old song?
It certainly wasn't Best's drumming that got him sacked from The Beatles.Kasim Sulton, Meat Loaf's musical director and a former member of Todd Rundgren's Utopia, said this: "It is generally acknowledged among musicians that Pete was the best drummer on the Liverpool scene."
@tauroscorp I don't know about this Kasim Sulton dude... I met Pete Best two times. He is a heckuva a nice guy. Quiet, but a great personality and it's amazing at this point he still loves getting out and playing but listen... I'm a drummer and a huge Beatles fan. I've heard both of their early drumming - 1962. While Pete was competent, in my humble opinion, i have to say that Ringo had a better sound and the WAY he played fit the song better. Pete's fills/ style was not as good.
And if you were born at that time... And your school friend has a friend... And this friend of your school friend has a band... And... damn... it could have been anyone here, don't you think? I wanna have what they had and easy the way it was, dude. Don't tell me it's impossible because I already am my own party-spoiler. I'm glad that they were together and gave a reason to listen to music. Think. We must have total devotation. Withouth them, there wouldn't be music. Thanks, Beatlessiah.
They sound here like a garage band that has been together for about three days. It's interesting to know that they once sucked. You never know who's gonna blossom.
They didn't suck in early days! You can't feel the feeling, the attitude..? The problem of modern days people is that everything must be so friking perfect... and that without any feeling too... Modern times are rubbish!
@tauroscorp I agree with you - I was there in the early days - they were always one of the top bands around Merseyside - don't forget they had hit records in 1962 and 1963 in the UK before they went to the U.S.
@arickett68 I know that they had hit records before the British invasion to USA, I'm not american. =) So you saw The Beatles with Pete Best? So tell me how was his drumming because some wiseguys are telling something else here. =)
@tauroscorp The Beatles were perfect in the studio. They set the standard for being perfect. They had to when they stopped touring. It revolutionized music. Unfortunately the music industry is controlled by people who have lots of money! Those people have destroyed the music industry. And that is why Modern times are rubbish when it comes to music. Because some rich jerks decide what will be popular, sold and heard on the radio. It really is sad.
@tauroscorp yeah thts why me personally i want my band to do stuff and leave it like tht the raw version it sounds better and its kooler to actually hear what your fav musiciens did when they recorded loll
@tauroscorp it actually sounds BETTER a lil bit wrong....but now they have auto tune, and everything is done with computers, so musically it is perfect, but the music itself is crappy, and the recording quality is crappy, and most of todays musicians have very little-if any, talent at all
You are not kidding! today the "Big stars" all lip sync live and if they are really singing they pretty much suck. This shit is as "Real" as you can get in all it's candid splendor and people loved it. Major Labels and the whole Corporate system have completely destroyed everyone's view of what real music is. Very Sad!
@tauroscorp also....young people don't know what a "live" raw performance sounds like....without all the computerized programs & effects to clean up everything. These guys were playing in the most primitive situations you can imagine....shitty old amps, guitars that probably were never intonated or gone over by a "roadie" etc
@yowzephyr Difference is that they are trying out their own material, garage bands do covers. Anyone can play Smoke on the Water, go do your own songs and it's totally different
many trustworthy sources say the early '62 date is wrong and both their claims point to this being late '62. sounds like a ringo in rehearsal mode track to me. listen to the roll towards the end. pete didn't swing like that. oh, and one (only one so far) site says ringo claimed he was on it.
I like this version much better. The "surf'in" guitar and tempo are much more energetic, though it's slower. The unique blend of their voices is amazing and can't be copied, though millions have tried. Great post.
It's hard to believe that the Beatles were wearing leather pants at "The Cavern" in 1962 long before Jim Morrison of the Doors etc in 1967. Dan O'Niallain, Grafton, Mass.
You could tell that if they had not fires Pete they probably would not have gotten signed. If they got signed still they would eventually kick him out. Maybe with him as a drummer they would not have gotten famous
All due respect to John, he's wrong. Ringo was an all around better drummer than Pete. He wasn't sent from the band because he wasn't a good Beatles, it was indeed because he wasn't the drummer that Ringo was.
Listen to the recording of love me do they did for their audition for george martin in June 1962 with Pete on drums. He was totally out of time on a number of occassions leading Martin to decide to use a session drummer on their recordings.
It always irks me to admit this, but early on, George was not a good rock'n'roll lead guitarist; other forms with easier progressions, rockabilly etc, he was the bees knees, in fact best apart from Perkins et al, but not rock'n'roll. However, it was great to see him become a master, his playing on the rooftop was A1, so he got there in the end.
this isnt a cavern club recording, this was recorded in 1963. They never used it, John Lennon was quoted as saying george harrisons solo was like a "rubber band." I got this on a bootleg pre-anothology.
I think you'll find that the drummer at 0.12 is called John Hutchinson (The Big Three) not Tommy Moore. The photo was taken at the Larry Parnes audition as The Silver Beatles on 10 May 1060.
There's a website called Savage Young Beatles that proves this is Ringo, not Pete. They have links to audio clips from this era. This is a rehearsal tape, probably made by Paul, from October 1962. Ringo was hired in August. He'd been with them 2 months. Ringo's got an unmistakable feisty backbeat you can hear especially well in the instrumental section. If Pete could have played like this, they'd have kept him.

john lennon says "Pete is a better drummer, but ringo is a better beatle".
Well That means that Ringo was more friendly and got alound with The Beatles and knew the passion of songs. Pete just had more skill thougth
LordObsidian99 2 years ago
Lennon used the word "good", not "better", for both Pete and Ringo in that phrase.

Listen to the recording of love me do they did for their audition for george martin in June 1962 with Pete on drums. He was totally out of time on a number of occassions leading Martin to decide to use a session drummer on their recordings.

Actually, this is Ringo. This Cavern Club rehearsal recording was done shortly after Ringo joined.

POOR Pete Best!
This is great rockabilly tho.
mozmuse 2 years ago
Wow... this is rockabilly folks. Shows the heavy influence of the 50's beats. I like it myself. The solo sounds great too Eddie
or Scotty would give it a thumbs up. If there is more of this sound in the early Beatles catalog I need to check it out.

pick up live at the bbc. its really the only official release with that stuff.
Nitram250 2 years ago
It always irks me to admit this, but early on, George was not a good rock'n'roll lead guitarist; other forms with easier progressions, rockabilly etc, he was the bees knees, in fact best apart from Perkins et al, but not rock'n'roll. However, it was great to see him become a master, his playing on the rooftop was A1, so he got there in the end.

this isnt a cavern club recording, this was recorded in 1963. They never used it, John Lennon was quoted as saying george harrisons solo was like a "rubber band." I got this on a bootleg pre-anothology.

So great to hear the origins of the song !

The date of course should have read "10 May 1960" LOL
jcatha1 2 years ago
I think you'll find that the drummer at 0.12 is called John Hutchinson (The Big Three) not Tommy Moore. The photo was taken at the Larry Parnes audition as The Silver Beatles on 10 May 1060.
jcatha1 2 years ago
There's a website called Savage Young Beatles that proves this is Ringo, not Pete. They have links to audio clips from this era. This is a rehearsal tape, probably made by Paul, from October 1962. Ringo was hired in August. He'd been with them 2 months. Ringo's got an unmistakable feisty backbeat you can hear especially well in the instrumental section. If Pete could have played like this, they'd have kept him.

Hey guys the drummer at 0;12 is called Tommy Moore. He was the Silver Beetles drummer from April to June 1960. At that time hes was about 35 years
