  • Sir, you sanded the cylinder? That made my eyes go wide! 8^o Amazing - and I just can't wait to hear this engine run.

  • @HD41117 I knocked the rust off with some sand paper, yes..and I'll be honing the cylinders. not sure why your eyes went wide.. maybe you need glasses

  • @1963impala2dr Haha. I wear 'em already. Sanding cylinders sounds pretty impressive to me - just showing my inexperience with cast iron.

  • @HD41117 haha.. I wear em too.. nothing too impressive bout shoving my fist down a cylinder hole and knocking off some surface rust.. someone left a spark plug out so that cylinder drew moisture.. nothing serious tho.. :)

  • For reasons I cannot explain, my wife loves this vid. She thinks the weasel is the funniest thing. She heard the vid before she saw it and came over to me wanting to be sure that "weasel" was not some rat rod part but instead, an actual weasel! I thought that was funny and she loves your sense of humour! From one rodder to another, keep cars fun! Blessings.

  • @ptpdub haha.. thats funny. did she see the other weasel Sparky caught for me a while back? she must have heard the music behind the video! hahaha

  • I can tell you're just havin' way too much fun....

  • Glad the engine is unfrozen. Good sign. I like the idea of babying the new toy, alittle tlc now could really extend out the life later...and what a perfect tinker project for the off season. Well, if you don't mind being chased by peta...a weasel tail on the rod would be just about sweet.

  • Hey we are just a bunch of hillbilly's... I have put engines together in worse conditions .....lol

  • those old engines had a high nickel content never seamed to ware much .rering her and lets hear her run and if that was the wrong way to do it then why do thay sell rering kit ?make sure that everyone knows that you have a ratrod garage not a new car garage

  • how do you heat your shop?

  • @2stroketurbo if you pause the clip at 1:05, look under the engine and just to the right of the lift post, you can see most of a small electric heater hanging on the wall.. been there for 18 years and never given me a problem

  • cant wait to hear it run

  • It Look`s Like Your Honing In On The Problem!!! Ha Ha.....

  • Nice project. New rat rod on the horizon. Merry Christmas my friend.

  • @jaivette thanks

  • Might as well get a set of bearings for it to. And maybe lap the valves and new valve stem seals. That should all be cheap and really freshen it up.

  • @mjmcomputers haha.. what bearings!

  • @1963impala2dr Another babbitt rod motor? I guess you are determined to blow the babbitt rods out of something.

  • @mjmcomputers yeah, 1947 would tell ya its a babbitt..hey, I've had good luch with the 32.. aint blown no babbitts, and aint shot no rabbitts! haha

  • @1963impala2dr But you got 2 more chances to blow one in this one.

  • Some of the best running motors I've built have been simple re-ring jobs. If everything else looks good might as well run it. While you've got the head off a little valve lappin' would make it run like new. As long as you're having fun, that's what it's all about!

  • With very little tinkering I think it would run.

  • @phill903 or a whole lot, but its fun!

  • sounds like a good plan . hone and re ring . I do it all the time here. Never had a problem yet from doing that. It the bores are good and the pistons are good . Hone job and rings . And maybe bearings , but she'll live again !!

  • @chevahaulic bearings? I'm not pulling the crank!

  • @1963impala2dr who said you have to pull the crank to put bearing in , lol :P

If there good , i'd leave them too.

  • @chevahaulic well. I dont intend to pull the crank but thats the only way to change the bearings in it.. you lost me

  • @1963impala2dr what are you guys babbling about in here? :D go build that body!!! dangit already. enough horsin around, git to workin!!!!

  • @novelist10 I wuz just messing with him.. he was saying replace the bearings.. hit haint got no bearings! cept. mains.. she's a babbitt rabbitt

  • @1963impala2dr i didn't know this engine was still using babbitt bearings. So yes , your right. I just figured by 1947 , everyone was using insert bearings by now. Guess not. I learned something this morning :)

  • @chevahaulic haha.. I was just messing with you a little.. wondered when you'd catch on.. haha..

  • @1963impala2dr lol , What can I say , i'am a little slow :P

  • Dispose of the Weasel? The cat did not bring you a present; he is wanting you to cook it for him. :)

  • @coffeefish he's gonna be waitin for a while!

  • Man, that straight 8 is an awesome piece to have...I'd love to put something like that in a rat rod.

  • @utoobube should be fun

  • you bet, freshen it up. Have the pistons knurled and resize them with a file and your good to go. If the play on the crank is ok then I wouldn't touch the mains. The rods ride on regular bearings though, right? if they are a tiny bit loose then they can be shimmed with brass shim stock. I've seen shim stock at .001 and up.

I'm really waiting for the hemi. When I had my '53 Henry J a friend that wanted to put a 392 in it, weighed 1000 pounds with iron trans, didn't think Henry could carry it.

  • @jacktheripped haha... yeah, like I'm gonna do all that..lol yeah.. those hemis are heavy duded!

  • Cool project..a friend had a '50 Buick fastback and the straight 8 with a 3 speed performed great.

  • @ceedell this'ns got a 3 spd

  • i still say that motor would look cool with a roadster body built around it. . .

  • @novelist10 t'would!

  • @1963impala2dr yes it twould. :D

  • You can't go wrong with a fresh ring an bearing overhaul. Strechin the spring in the oil pump and sharpin the valves. That's fun! It's gonna look purty all painted up! I know you'll do a nice job. Fun times my Brother!

  • @cutworm59 hahahaha... I aint paintin squat hahaha.. no bearings.. they're Babbitt of course and I'm not going to spend the money to have them resized for inserts.. you quack me up!

  • suff it in the nash lol ;-]

  • @TheMrphantom309 thought about that

  • guess ol sparky is gonna git some tuna for christmas! hahaha!

  • @55dude no, he can eat weasel!

  • I would love to see inside the engine when you work on it. I think it would be fascinating.

  • around here the weasels turn white this time of year and are called ermines

  • @swampratman2000 i saw a white one here a few years ago

  • The dirty rotten weasle has been vanquished and the Buick is on the road to recovery. Sounds like a gripping plot to me.

  • Re-ring? I know you were hoping that it was going to go just like the old Chevy, just a little toon up and some barbed wire and she would be good to go. But, even so, it sounds like she is going to be running without any major work to it. Any particular plans for it once it is running? Multiple carbs, tooned headers? Well you know the old saying, "If it don't go, chrome it!"

  • @Busia1949 I didnt really have any expectations at all.. as I said, bought sight unseen.. now that you mention it, it might fire up and run just like the old chevy but for 27 bucks, I might ring it.. no plans, its just another toy

  • You told me that cat was worthless. He kept that weasel out of your chicken coop.

  • @bc65925 if only I had a chicken coop

  • @jhaze62 I guess..haha
